  1. And in case anyone wonders, as I did, why the heck John Oliver would be attending Pistons games in Michigan... this Wikipedia entry explains it.
  2. Stephen's first week of reruns is coming up. I guess that explains why Stephen is having Kimmel on to promote his week of shows in Brooklyn (which begin on the 19th). Friday, Oct. 16 Jimmy Kimmel; The cast and director of “Crimson Peak”: Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Guillermo Del Toro; musical performance by Beach House; Vance Joy sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human Monday, Oct. 19 Nobel Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai; Actress Kerry Washington; musical performance by The Arcs (OAD: 0/25/15) Tuesday, Oct. 20 Kevin Spacey; Carol Burnett; interview with and musical performance by Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp (OAD: 9/16/15) Wednesday, Oct. 21 Amy Schumer; Stephen King; interview with and musical performance by Troubled Waters (OAD: 9/11/2015) Thursday, Oct. 22 Tom Hanks; John Oliver; CEO of Snapchat Evan Spiegel; interview with Bill Withers and musical performance by Ed Sheeran (OAD: 9/30/15) Friday, Oct. 23 Actress Lupita Nyong’o; Senator Bernie Sanders; interview with and performance by “An American in Paris’” Christopher Wheeldon, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope (OAD: 9/18/15)
  3. I had the same thing happen with my TiVo right after @M moved back to midnight. Luckily I noticed it right away (when I was checking which shows would be recording during the upcoming week) so was able to reset it. If it happens again, if your DVR has that functionality, you can always set a manual recording (probably 12-12:35 would be best, since @M usually starts a couple minutes after "11:59 and 59 seconds"). Very excited that Steve Agee will be on tonight; he's one of my favorite panelists.
  4. The Soup poked fun at Matt again last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgSGtfn4JZQ
  5. Mo 10/12: Steve Agee, Colin Hanks, Megan Neuringer Tu 10/13: Kevin Smith, Mike Lawrence, Ashley Barnhill We 10/14: Riki Lindhome, Kate Micucci, Michael Shannon Th 10/15: Morgan Murphy, Dan Soder, Big Jay Oakerson
  6. Ratings are down compared to the same week in 2014, but I'm sure CC will give Trevor a while to find his footing.
  7. 10/12: Ta-Nehisi Coates (author & a national correspondent at The Atlantic – promoting article “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration”) 10/13: Richard Dawkins (author – promoting book “Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science”) 10/14: Tom Hiddleston (actor – promoting movie “Crimson Peak”) 10/15: Jack Black (actor – promoting movie “Goosebumps”)
  8. BTW I was glad to see that Larry's book of humorous essays is being reissued in paperback. It's very funny -- I read it when it first came out in 2009. (He was already a "Daily Show" regular, which is why I picked it up.) Definitely recommended.
  9. Re: Whole Foods, the asparagus water will never not crack me up. I'm actually a little divided over the prison-made goat cheese. The thing is, it's extremely hard for ex-convicts to find jobs, and food service has proven to be one of the few reliable markets for their labor. There's a famous operation in Southern California called Homeboy Industries that has a food truck and bakery that hires previously incarcerated men and women, and my favorite bread company (Dave's Killer Bread -- run by a dude who spent 15 years in prison) does so as well. But I agree that it looks shady for hoity-toity Whole Foods to be seen as profiting off the labor of folks earning pennies a day; it would probably be better for them to find a source that hires ex-cons rather than current ones, since ex-cons have to be paid at least minimum wage. But the idea of jobs training in prison is not inherently bad.
  10. I was always kind of a weird completist about Jon's TDS interviews -- I would always watch them no matter what -- but so far I've fast forwarded through most of Trevor's. I tried watching the Seth Rogen one but my God, when Seth and Trevor were both laughing I couldn't hit the fast forward button quickly enough. The rest of the show was good, though, and I'm glad they finally addressed the PP issue.
  11. Thursday, Oct. 8 Actress Cate Blanchett; CEO of Airbnb Brian Chesky; Dartmouth University Football Dummy (n) Friday, Oct. 9 James Corden, host of the CBS’s “The Late Late Show”; Co-Founder and CEO of Vice Media Shane Smith; musical performance by Halsey Monday, Oct. 12 Actress Carey Mulligan; Elvis Costello; musical performance by Darlene Love Tuesday, Oct. 13 Sarah Silverman; Actor Elijah Wood; musical performance by Legends of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses Wednesday, Oct. 14 Actor Jack Black; CEO of Go Pro Nick Woodman; performance by tap dancer Michelle Dorrance Thursday, Oct. 15 Oprah Winfrey; Creators of “Welcome to Night Vale” Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor; musical performance by Judith Hill Friday, Oct. 16 The cast and director of “Crimson Peak”: Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Guillermo Del Toro; musical performance by Beach House
  12. It's worth keeping an eye on LSSC's YouTube channel, since they've been posting quite a few web extras, like this very funny bit featuring a guest from last week. "If you want the velvet, you have to make with the silver!"
  13. Hour-long episode coming up:
  14. I very rarely venture into Reddit but I checked out the r/Jeopardy forum and there are quite a few people posting there who went to school with Matt or played Quiz Bowl with/against him. Consensus seems to be that he is a nice guy, just very focused and intense. Sample comment:
  15. Mo 10/5: Ken Jeong, Dave Foley, Suzy Nakamura (all panelists from the "Dr. Ken" cast) Tu 10/6: Kurt Braunohler, Alexi Wasser, Tom Lenk We 10/7: Ethan Embry, Brandon Johnson, Eli Roth Th 10/8: Paul F. Tompkins, Randy Liedtke, Natalie Morales Mo 10/12: Steve Agee Tu 10/13: TBA We 10/14: Riki Lindhome, Kate Micucci Th 10/15: Morgan Murphy, Dan Soder
  16. Not sure how I missed the hypnosis video -- thanks, The Luvly Junkie! A Slate article has links to a couple more. The Illuminati one is fun.
  17. I warmed up to Matt because he is a theater fan, and he mentioned tonight that he collects Playbills from every show he's ever seen. I also collect Playbills so we have that in common. At least he's toned down the shouting several decibels from his first appearance, five-finger days ago. (I was SHOCKED to find out he was only 23 -- I would have guessed 30s for sure.)
  18. The game designer was on Friday's show. PewDiePie was on Thursday's. As a Swede I was very disappointed that the censors bleeped PewDiePie's Swedish cursewords. C'mon, it's 12:30 AM and it's not even in English. The only one they let through was "helvete" (hell), which is pretty mild. Wish I was better at reading lips so I could have caught the other two!
  19. One of them had a brief shot that looked like Trevor being hypnotized by a watch being swung like a pendulum, but I haven't been able to find a video that matches that description. (I found the "juice" one because there was a quick shot of a juice bottle in one of the other videos.)
  20. This is AMAZING. TDS made a ton of unlisted YouTube videos that only come up when you Google "Trevor Noah" +something (try Trevor Noah Crocs for an example). Splitsider found lots of them, but there are probably more. Edited to add: besides "Crocs," I found two more that aren't mentioned in Splitsider: Google Trevor Noah Knit & Trevor Noah Juice.
  21. The bit about the shooting in Oregon seemed awkward, but holy cow, that African dictator sketch was hilarious. The week's best segment by far, IMO, and one I'm sure Trevor had a large hand in writing. Somehow I knew that the joke would be that only white people love pumpkin spice -- I've seen variations on that joke all over the internet -- but I have to admit that Roy Wood's sipping on a sweet potato latte surprised me, in a good way. I even thought the Ryan Adams song was pretty decent... I guess the rest of the show had put me in a good mood, since I had assumed I'd FF through it but wound up listening to the whole thing.
  22. OH MY GOD YOU GUYS http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34406034 edited to add: oops, I didn't notice that Delwyn had updated their post (above) with this link. Anyway, Noujain's reaction couldn't be more delightful and I hope John includes it on Sunday's show so everyone can see it!
  23. I read that Stephen keeps the Ed several degrees warmer than David Letterman. I fast forwarded through the "Stephen, Stephen" chanting on TCR, and I fast forward through his dancing on the LSSC. I have too much late night TV piling up on my DVR nowadays!
  24. Critic's Notebook: Searching For Stephen Colbert, by Tim Goodman (Hollywood Reporter)
  25. Next week: 10/5: Seth Rogen (actor – promoting movie “Steve Jobs”) 10/6: Aaron Sorkin (screenwriter – promoting movie “Steve Jobs”) 10/7: Evgeny Afineevsky (documentary filmmaker – promoting “Winter on Fire”) 10/8: Rachel Maddow (host of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show”)
