  1. The answer was Zeppelin and they ruled "blimp" incorrect?  That's rough.  Perhaps technically accurate, but a tough ruling, as most people refer to them as blimps.

I missed FJ, too.  Somehow I thought Helen Reddy was Canadian.

  2. Hey, Alex is from Canada and I bet he knew today's Final Jeopardy.

What was Rachel doing betting everything but $1 on FJ?  If she had come in second she would have felt awful.  In a tie situation you HAVE to bet it all, imho.

  3. Close game today.  Some of the clues were too easy.

Final Jeopardy: Literature is not my long suit but I got it right away.  I'm note sure I've ever actually read anything T.S. Eliot ever wrote, but I knew he was from St. Louis and emigrated to the UK.  Surprised the contestants all missed it.

Did the new champ say she went to the University of Texas?  That's reason to like her right there (I went to grad school at UT.)

  4. Watching today's game, Ben struck me as a good player.  Not as good as Tim, but good enough to win a game.

Little surprised Tim missed that Final Jeopardy.  Oh, well, he won over $100K and will probably make it to the next TOC.

  5. The Conversation is the kind of film that makes hard-core movie buff lists of greatest films, but I think it's too esoteric for the AFI list.

Duvall's films on the AFI list were The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Apocalypse Now, M*A*S*H, Network, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Of course, you can argue about these lists forever, and what should be on them.  Duvall had a long career with many great and not-so-great films.

  6. Good game today!  (At least toward the end.  I started watching halfway through DJ).  Tim playing like a pro, but Chris outpacing him with those two monster Daily Double bets.  I got FJ right away, but I guess it wasn't that easy as two good contestants missed it.

Big payday, which always makes Alex happy.

  7. I am sympathetic to contestants being objectified and criticized/judged for the dumbest things.  But I wish that article had been written by someone other than Talia Levin.  Levin played one day, came in third place, made some dumb joke in FJ about "Turd Ferguson" and they tried to parlay her one appearance and dumb joke into Internet fame.

  8. I'm not sure I understand how they selected which contestants to pit against each other.  Were these 3 the highest scoring contestants from last week?  I think both Nikki and Gus had very high dollar totals when they won, but not sure about Emily.  Or maybe its a totally random match-up between all the winners.  Does anyone know?

I was wondering about that, too.  I believe Niki and Gus had the two highest scores last week and yet they were pitted against each other in the semi-final on Monday.  In the TOC they seeded the semi-finals so the three highest scorers players from the first week each got the leftmost position in the semis.  (They weren't pitted against each other.)

The guy who runs thefinalwager.co (who is himself a College Tournament alum) speculated that the producers wanted to put Niki (a California student) against Gus (Stanford) because those two schools are traditional rivals.

thefinalwager.co also has a list of past winners.  Stanford is the only school with two winners.  If Niki makes it, the University of California will become the second school to sport two winners.

  9. I suspect Niki was worried at the end there.  Worried that her response of Who is King James? would be ruled wrong because it wasn't specific enough.  Emily had said Who is James I?  Niki seemed relieved that the judges ruled her response was correct.  (as I think they should have.)

  10. Fred must have dozed off when making his Final Jeopardy wager.  Or he was trying to be too clever.  Or he lacked confidence in the category.

I would have lacked confidence in that category, too, but as it turned out the clue was not difficult - got it right away.

  11. They guy over at http://thefinalwager.co/has been talking about a "drought" of four-time champs and has been counting the days.  64 days through yesterday.

But Fred comes through and does it!  Four days.  Will probably be in the next Tournament of Champions.  And he's just so relaxed about it!  I know you all disagree with me, but I am liking Fred.

  12. Three good players today (Tues) but they were stymied by a tough Final Jeopardy.  (I didn't get it either.)

I'm actually kind of digging Fred's slowness.  Plus, in a strange interview segment, he almost got a case of the giggles when talking about the peppers in his garden.

  13. Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen Eva Longoria without her makeup on, either.

But even so, I think I love her.

She's got skills as a comic actress.  (Everybody on this show has those skills.)  And she's a good enough sport to show her inability to sing.

  14. One more win and Kyle will be a four-timer and probably qualify for TOC.  Given the dearth of multi-day winners recently, that's notable.

On today's FJ, I came up with the answer right at the end of the time period, so probably would not have had time to write the name down.  In retrospect, though, it wasn't all that hard to guess.

  15. I appreciated Johnny's laid back style, but what was with that $0 Final Jeopardy wager?  That's an unreasonable gamble that Erik is going to get FJ wrong.  Johnny lucked out.

And the only German astronomer I could think of was Kepler.  Copernicus was Polish and Brahe was Danish.

  16. Today (Friday): Alex was excited the game wasn't a runaway.  And then he got a dramatic come-from-behind in Final Jeopardy.  I bet Alex loves this kind of stuff.

I guessed Albee in FJ.  Dee was the only one who got it.

  17. Good game today, but interesting (and risky) FJ wager by Theresa.  She was leading going into FJ but made only a small bet.  If either of the other two contestants got it right, Theresa would have lost.  She lucked into a win.  Can't count on that sort of result very often.  If she finds herself in this situation again, she needs to bet bigger.
