Stop in the Name of Love! In “Little Sister”, Jackie told Darlene that she bought an item for Darlene that Roseanne and Dan didn’t have the money for. What was the item?

S01.E19: Gluons, Guacamole, and the Color Purple
SparklesBitch replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Young Sheldon
Annie Potts is such a gem! I got a kick out of her date with the professor. Missy and Georgie doing her homework together was the sweetest. I’d like to see more of them interacting. “Put a verb in there, girl!” was easily my favorite line of the episode, and I loved him proudly hanging up her homework. :) I also really liked George and Meemaw hanging out and discussing her date. Mary joining was great too, but I missed what she said after Meemaw made the Pillsbury Doughboy comment that made George protest that he had feelings. Help? Lastly, something about Missy’s posture during the dinner prayer at the beginning cracked me up. lol! -
“Nice outfit Mom. I see you’re trying it without the sickle.” That’s my Jackie! :) Estelle Parsons looks great and her Bev was perfect! I’m happy we got more sisterly bonding between Becky and Darlene, and I’m glad Darlene took both Becky and Roseanne’s advice, because they’re both right. Darlene and David would just not work long term. That being said, I loved the sweet moment between David and Roseanne near the end. She’s obviously still on his side as far as his ability to be a good dad is concerned. I wasn’t thrilled about Dan keeping David from his own kids, because ugh, but I can see where he’s coming from given David’s apparent track record. Other random thoughts: - Cracked up at Roseanne’s “hit it, Mary!” and Mary’s “beep!” So cute! - I’m jealous of Darlene’s wardrobe - Why do they have to go with Jackie being so over-the-top?! Having just seen Laurie on stage this past weekend, the difference between this over-the-top Jackie stuff and the much more nuanced acting that Laurie’s so obviously capable of is jarring. I wish they’d bring back the Jackie of earlier seasons who had things going on in her life, who was fun and layered and pretty well-rounded. It’s weird that she’s more normal and old school Jackie around Bev, but wacky the rest of the time.

Act Naturally: Roseanne Cast Members In Other Roles
SparklesBitch replied to jonesingjay's topic in Roseanne [V]
Hope the double post is okay since it’s over a month later. Just bumping this thread to mention that I saw Laurie in Three Tall Women this afternoon, and guys, she was phenomenal. If you have even the slightest interest and the chance to go see this awesome play, do it. All three ladies were wonderful, but there was something about getting to see Laurie live that was just amazing! :) -
Unfortunately, I think it depends what facility you go to. I volunteered for years at the main intake animal shelter in my large city, and we would have been absolutely delighted to have a potential adopter like Jackie come in. For all the reasons you mentioned, she’d be a very quick approval. Seriously, we would have handed her ALL the dogs. Stability is HUGE and harder to find in potential adopters than one might think. However, I have a coworker who volunteers with a very, very small private rescue. They’re so picky they don’t even adopt out one dog a week. She talks about how they look for reasons to turn people down. I know without a doubt that they’d deny Jackie in a heartbeat because she doesn’t have a fenced in yard, which they require for every dog they adopt out. Assuming Jackie still works at least part time, that would be another black mark because the dog would be alone for at least 8 (or however many) hours every weekday. The woman who runs the rescue always has between 12-15 homeless, adoptable dogs in her house at any given time because they turn down a crazy amount of applications. I’m not exaggerating in the slightest.

Agreed. Getting On was a gem, and she was fantastic. Other than Jackie, her role as Dr. Jenna James might actually be my favorite of hers.

S01.E18: A Mother, a Child and a Blue Man's Backside
SparklesBitch replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Young Sheldon
I’m also on Team Mary Went Too Far, but I agree with other posters who said it was about the power struggle. Also, I agree that she was shocked at the content....which I think lead to her overreacting a bit. For me, it was worth it just to see George’s reaction to Mary putting her foot down. Him being so turned on cracked me up. Everyone’s grossed out “ew” reactions to it at the dinner table was icing on the cake. Missy always makes me smile, and after this episode, I’ve decided that I need to work the phrase “I don’t think that was enough science” into conversation. I work in a lab, so that shouldn’t be too hard. Lol! -
Roseanne doesn’t have near enough tact to respect something like that, though. If Jackie were estranged from Andy and Roseanne was less than in 100% agreement with the reason, she’d be hassling Jackie about it constantly, even if it really was a sore or painful subject for Jackie. The most important thing for Roseanne is to be right and make everyone do things the way she would do them. Any feelings Jackie would have about that would definitely come secondary to Roseanne’s opinion. Especially since it would have to do with raising kids. Jackie could never do anything right in Roseanne’s eyes in general, and raising kids would definitely be one of those areas in which she’d be delighted to point out anything she thought Jackie was doing wrong.
-
She’s done quite a bit, actually. Right now she’s starring in the play Three Tall Women in NYC. I’m super excited to be seeing it on Saturday! :)
-
Exactly. What is it with their insistence on making Jackie this lonely sad sack who has nothing going on in her life??? At heart, she IS a good person. I can understand being temporarily estranged from your kid for whatever reason, and Wacky Jackie can be a bit much, but she’s nowhere near as insufferable as Bev is.

I’m so frustrated with this! I really wanted Jackie to have something going on in her life. Ugh. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the drunk sister bonding and hope we get to see more of Darlene and Becky being all sisterly. Also, I’ll always love Darlene’s smart mouth in general, but her dry delivery of “wasted as duck” killed me dead. Lol!

Fact vs. Fiction: The Podcast and the Real People
SparklesBitch replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Dirty John
Same here. I was hooked from the very beginning. I think you’re right about it being the perfect storm. He was apparently smooth enough to have an answer for everything and she was determined to see the best in people. According to her, he treated her really well and once she fell in love.....well, I know from personal experience (though nothing like this, luckily) that you can be smart in the head and just so, so stupid in the heart. You can overlook red flags and rationalize like a champ. Then when you get out and look back you think how could I ever have let it get that far???? -
Lol! Maybe they were. It’s such a good movie! God, if they could have found some way to do that to Fisher without the show totally flying off the rails, I would have loved to see it. He was so awful, and his fake “I hate myself for this” crap was so flimsy. I still cheer when Roseanne tells him, “I hope the next brother-in-law kills you!”

Unpopular Opinions: "The Post-Lotto Episodes Were the Best!"
SparklesBitch replied to SPLAIN's topic in Roseanne [V]
Same here except for the part about being from Moldova. :) To expand upon this point....for me, I didn’t like the lotto win because after it, the show felt like a retailer sitcom instead of like hanging out with friends from down the street that you’ve known for 20 years. It didn’t feel like it was about real people anymore. -
S01.E17: Jiu-Jitsu, Bubble Wrap, and Yoo-hoo
SparklesBitch replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Young Sheldon
Me too, especially them getting their story straight before George left the chicken coop. Yes! The threat in her voice was perfect and hilarious, and definitely right in line with Mary of the BBT. I really enjoyed George in this episode in general. His interactions with Mary cracked me up, from his “that’s rich” reaction to her saying that he’s more intimidating than she is to his “Yeah. Me and the Lord. Team effort” comment when Mary said something like “thank the Lord” after he “handled” the situation with Sheldon’s bully. I like his sense of humor. :) -
On a really shallow note: wow, Will’s shirt was tight! And Grace looked the best she has all season, I actually really liked her outfit. I loved that nobody wants to end up so alone and emeshed with each other as Will and Grace. I was strangely touched that Karen stopped her affair with Malcolm, she really does love Stan, surprisingly. The stuff with poor Smitty cracked me up, and his #metoo comment was the perfect touch. That actor who plays him was a really good sport. Grace’s line about not ever being asleep while her parents were having sex in the hotel rooms of her youth was my favorite of the episode. The expression of horror on her face killed me. Weird episode, but fun to end the season with!

My thoughts exactly. This is why I don’t understand physical punishment. All the kid learns is that someone who they’re supposed to be able to trust to keep them safe instead loses their temper and deliberately causes pain and/or fear. Because of her family history, I don’t think the Roseanne Conner of the 90s would have done this OR encouraged spanking. She was always so creative with punishments, like the door removal or walking behind DJ to school while dressed all crazy. Actually, even hopping in the shower with Harris in this episode was more like old Roseanne and totally cracked me up.

Ooh, I like this idea!!

Just saw the episode and catching up with all the posts. And I agree, these things bothered me too. After everything we heard about the abuse Rosanne and Jackie suffered from their dad, the abuse Jackie took from Fisher, and the great scene between Roseanne and DJ with the whole “I’m sorry you got hit too” thing.....I just can’t see Roseanne advocating for spanking. Ugh. I want at least some mention of Andy. I hope he still exists. I don’t want Jackie’s whole life to be centered on her sister’s family again. I agree that would be super disappointing. Yes! I loved the chair race and the “death wish”. So funny! It really did feel like classic Dan. I felt like the problem here was that Harris was using it as an actual insult meant to really hurt. Like, Roseanne can call the family “white trash hillbillies” all she wants, but it’s always been an affectionate sort of self-deprecating insult, but Harris clearly used it to mean that she clearly thinks she’s better than everyone in the house and THAT was the attitude that Roseanne was trying to squash. That’s how I took it at least. Lol! That line was one of my favorites from this episode. Harris inherited Darlene’s quick wit. I also loved Darlene’s quip about Harris’ henchmen being stupid, Riddler. I laughed out loud. And agreed about Dan. Pot, meet kettle! Agreed 100%! The sink thing made me cringe. The whole idea of any kind of physical punishment makes me cringe. I feel like it was out of line, especially with the family history of physical abuse that Roseanne and Jackie had to work through and how it affected their lives. Harris definitely deserved a punishment, and Roseanne and Dan were well within their rights to be disciplinarians, but yeah, I didn’t find the sink thing funny. I was unsettled at how Roseanne grabbed her and forcefully held her down. Now, had she pulled the hose out and sprayed Harris while Harris was standing beside the sink, I’d have been laughing my butt off. The whole manhandling thing just made me uncomfortable. As a disclaimer, I’m a single woman in my thirties with no kids. My parents had a strict no hitting policy, even going so far as to purposefully move us into a town where the schools didn’t allow it. I did, however, grow up surrounded by people with quite a bit of humor and wit though, so my family went the verbal route, it was just never abusive.
-
Yeah, this is where I was going with my earlier post too. We had computers in school for awhile (mostly for typing practice and playing Oregon Trail!) before we had one at home. It wasn’t even that we were struggling financially either.....my parents were/are just really, really slow to adopt new technology, especially if it’s expensive and their old stuff still works. Don’t even get me started on how long it took my siblings and I to convince them to move to smart phones (“what do you mean I can SEE my grandchild on the phone while I talk to her???”). There’s still a functional rotary phone in their basement. Nobody ever uses it anymore, but yeah, we could if we wanted too.
-
Yep, I was born in ‘84 and we had a rotary phone when I first learned how to use the phone. My first few formal papers for high school were typed up on my grandfather’s electric typewriter because we didn’t get a computer until I was already halfway through 9th grade. So yeah, old technology can definitely be linked to frugality. It was in my life growing up!

S10.E01: Twenty Years to Life / S10.E02: Dress to Impress
SparklesBitch replied to tessaray's topic in Roseanne [V]
Lol yes! While somehow simultaneously putting in a full career’s worth of time as a Deputy Director with the FBI. He’s been a busy man! :) ....when I heard that he was going to show up on The X-Files reboot AND the Roseanne revival, I was so happy that I was going to get to see him reprise his character in TWO old shows that I loved, not just one. Bring on Chuck and Anne Marie! They were always my favorite characters outside of Jackie, Nana Mary and the main family. -
I totally agree with ALL of your great post, but especially this. Both John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf have had long, successful careers that far exceed anything Roseanne might think they “owe her” by them being cast on the show long ago. Their talent outside the show speaks for itself. Yes! I mean, not going to lie, it’s hard for me to ignore the politics, but I’m trying. However, the credibility she’s giving these ridiculous theories is really, really hard to stomach. I’m feeling guilty about watching this revival because I feel like supporting it is supporting her harmful views in some way. I don’t know. I mean, I’m honestly watching for Laurie Metcalf, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert, but part of me really doesn’t want to support Roseanne in any capacity right now.

Me too, I thought it was right in line with eventual adult Sheldon. He assumed he’d win and that everyone would be in awe listening to him, so why would he add any extras like other people? I think he’d see it as beneath his project. Definitely jerkier. It was much easier to see shades of adult Sheldon in this week’s younger Sheldon for these reasons. I felt so bad for poor George, trying to help and getting blown off. The not hearing what he just said comment made me cringe in sympathy. OMG this would have been GOLD!!! I wish they would have done that now!! Oh, maybe! Didn’t think of that! Yes to ALL of this!!! As for the “dumb as soup” comment, I always assumed that BBT Mary was either just exaggerating (because most people would seem “dumb as soup” next to Sheldon) or referring more to any life choices adult Missy has made rather than just referring to her as “dumb as soup” in general because she’s clearly not. Both child and adult Missy are delightful. That being said, this is one of the reasons BBT Mary cracks me up. Like, when you think of the phrase “dumb as...”, the word “soup” to finish it would never, ever have occurred to me before hearing it on the show. Now I use it all time time just because I think it’s so hilariously absurd. Also, Meemaw wanting to teach Sheldon how to swear after his “fiddle-faddle!” outburst was awesome. So funny!!

Judging from some recent Instagram photos of a cast shoot in which she looked damn good in a little black dress, smoky eye and gorgeous wavy (rather than super curly) hair, there’s no way she’s pregnant. I mean, she’s not as tiny as she used to be, but she’s still pretty small. My guess is that whoever is currently styling her on W&G has no idea how to dress her. Either that or Debra managed to piss off the whole wardrobe department somehow. ;)
