TheOtherOne May 30, 2014 Share May 30, 2014 (edited) I liked it, mostly on the basis of the characters, and it looks like it did well last nght. It was the highest premiere for a summer comedy in five years and did better than anything NBC's had in the timeslot since October or so. And it stayed steady from the first episode to the second, so most of the audience must have liked what it saw. I'm always rooting for a multicam, so hopefully that means the show will end up being more than just a summer burnoff. It wasn't the best thing ever, but it was better than most purported comedies the networks turn out these days (case in point: its timeslot competition "The Millers." Ugh.) http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/05/30/tv-ratings-thursday-decent-debut-for-undateable-hells-kitchen-hollywood-game-night-up-gang-related-steady-black-box-last-comic-standing-down/268728/ (PS: I don't know anything about Chris D'Elia and don't really want to know anything about him, so I'm avoiding whatever he did or said. Finding out about actors always ruins them for me, like how my nostalgic fondness for 90s era Dean Cain was destroyed by 2010s era rightwing nutjob Dean Cain. :( ) Edited May 30, 2014 by TheOtherOne Link to comment
Kromm May 30, 2014 Share May 30, 2014 I oddly didn't mind D'Elia. And mind you I loathed everything about the Whitney show. Yes, he's greasy and sort of unlikable, but I think that fits with the arc of the character on this show (it's not trying to present him as some "catch" like on Whitney). I don't know his standup comedy (and from the sounds of things it's a good thing that I don't, but JUST based on what he did on this show it kind of worked... a tiny bit, but maybe not enough given how generic the show was in a lot of ways. The bar owner guy was effective in that role. Boring, sure, but again I think that was part of the point. Whether that makes him watchable over time is debateable, and I know from the fact that his leading lady got poached for another show (Lawrence's own "Ground Floor") that whatever story arc they had planned there isn't going to amount to much. Funches wasn't given enough to do, but at least among the "bunch of friends" he was the one to stand out. I giggled that he's the one you might suspect being the gay friend... but it's the other guy who's gay. 1 Link to comment
formerlyfreedom May 31, 2014 Author Share May 31, 2014 I never watched Whitney, just not my thing AT. ALL. And I was, in all honesty, pre-disposed to dislike Danny completely. But I didn't. He even had a few moments where I could go, 'eh, I don't hate this guy. I might even hang out with him VERY occasionally.' That said, I do NOT buy him as a chick magnet/ladies man/whatever kids call it these days. But I really like a lot of the other characters, Shelly, Justin, Shelly, Brett, and Shelly especially. And Shelly turning after Justin accuses him of giving him 'that look;' "Yes, I did..." Oh, Ron Funches, you're priceless.... Link to comment
oceanchild3 May 31, 2014 Share May 31, 2014 I watch a lot of terrible pilots (and shows in general) but I couldn't get through this one. I know it isn't quite the same, but I don't understand how Surviving Jack or Trophy Wife get canceled, but this gets a green-light. I know it is different networks and this was just the pilot, but i still don't get it. 1 Link to comment

Just to answer at least one or two of your questions; Surviving Jack and Trophy Wife were on Fox and ABC respectively. This show is on NBC. So there is no correlation whatsoever. Also, this show was picked up at last spring, just like the other two shows you mention, but didn't air until now. I was a huge fan of both Surviving Jack and Trophy Wife, and their cancellations upset me. And now I'm moving on. 1 Link to comment

I knew they were on different networks. My confusion is more about audience preferences. I know there isn't direct correlation, but isn't there some type of "competition" between networks what ends up being renewed. (If that even makes sense) I guess I'm just bummed about the cancellations. Sorry I know this isn't for this thread!! 1 Link to comment

This show may not be your cup of tea (hee, now I'm remembering my boyfriend Ron Funches with the tea kettle in the second episode, wait for me to stop giggling, thank you!)... But I really like some parts of it, and I'll take those parts, and enjoy it. Cuz life is short. Enjoy it! 1 Link to comment
bilgistic June 1, 2014 Share June 1, 2014 This was painful. Not quite as painful as Mixology or Friends with Better Sex Lives or whatever that other show was called, but damn, it was up there. Not even the Funches could redeem this tripe. And the line about Chris D'Elia being "almost 30". No. No, no, no. I just looked it up and he's 34, but he looks kind of rode hard even for 34. I'd have put him closer to "almost 40". I think he's kind of hot, so it's no slam on him. I'm "almost 40". Link to comment

maryis1 June 2, 2014 Share June 2, 2014 I tried watching this show but it was such a retread. Old jokes, guys who are "afraid" of women, sleazy man-boy, etc. etc. It just wasn't funny and every joke was telegraphed a mile away. Link to comment
jester June 2, 2014 Share June 2, 2014 Wow, im in the minority because I really enjoyed it. Maybe I should evaluate my standards. Yes the premise is pretty weak but I thought the cast more than made up for that. I'm not a huge D'Elia even won me over in that I know guys like that, and they really do have a heart underneath all the bluster, and I thought he nailed it. I was surprised to find this his Brent Morrin's (Justin) first show because I thought he was really great. Yes again these guys are playing cliches, but from what I've read the show moves past that pretty quickly and becomes more of an odd couple focus down the line and expands out to the other cast a bit more. Much like Lawrence hates the original premis that Cougar Town came out under, he has said it took a few episodes to find their voice on Undateable as well, and Im more than willing to ride along and see where it goes. I admit I was able to over look a few misses because the cast was so on point and I have a soft spot for anything Lawree does, so I'm hoping it sticks around for a while. Link to comment
possibilities June 2, 2014 Share June 2, 2014 I saw the promos for this show and decided it would be execrable. Then I found out Ron Funches was in it. Decided I'd give it a try. I had no idea it was a Bil Lawrence production-- is it? D'Elia is almost enough to poison the whole thing. But I was surprised that it's not as repulsive as I expected. At least they aren't making a hero out of stupid. 1 Link to comment
jhlipton June 2, 2014 Share June 2, 2014 This was painful. Not quite as painful as Mixology... It's funny because I saw a trailer, turned to my wife and ask "Did they make this show just so we'd miss Mixology? Mixology was not great in many ways, but this just sucked. His comments about #YesAllWomen don't surprise me, and just seal the deal. Link to comment
Ohwell June 6, 2014 Share June 6, 2014 I could like this show a lot better if it didn't have that annoying laugh track. In fact, that's the reason I don't watch many comedies anymore. I like greasy Chris D'Elia and I thought he was the best thing about that awful Whitney. Link to comment
