Lena goes out on another date with Wes, whom she's smitten with; but unbeknownst to her, Martin is doing his best to take care of a sick Milo. Meanwhile, Maya makes a decision on whether or not to become a single mother.

That did not go how i thought it would. *

This show is kinda depressing.

*ETA: To clarify, I was surprised that they did the dance teacher reveal so soon. Or that Lena would be so quick to try to reconcile with Martin.

And I got a weird vibe between Martin and the sister.

For the people who have been wondering about the longevity of this premise, I apologize for doubting you.

Maybe they know something we don't know, but I'm not seeing where this goes. I don't know what they are going for which is not promising for my continued viewing. I don't want them to reconcile as a couple. Not reconciling is the realistic thing to do. Maybe a few moments when one of them thinking let's give it a try, but that can't go on for years. So then what?  I really like the actors - Jenna and Oliver, not the kid actors, although the youngest kid getting pleading the fifth wrong amused me.

Yes, it seems they brought on a big move by one of them much too early.  That should not have happened as it disrupted the flow and didn't really fit with what we had been told--that they had lived separate lives for a long while.  To have him try to suddenly make a move like that just didn't work, and made things questionable for the show.  She was finally kind of happy about something in her life, and then he had to make things worse by basically telling her she deserved someone that was crazy about her, basically saying that wasn't him.   Well, what a waste of time--wrong choice by the writers.

Pretty much and this entire "big anniversary" surprise and going out to this restaurant basically through their financial woes out the door. Because how could they afford these things if the reason one didn't officially move out or look for a place to live was because they couldn't afford to live on their own. Or at least not for a while, the writers have written themselves in constant corners since the second episode. They either portray Martin as too dim for his own good or Lena who has these major revelations two years, too late. At this point, I say, sell the house, get the money together, go live with relatives or someone and hope the kids adapt well to it. Because really, this is a couple that need to move on.

IIRC the reason they did not sell the house is that it is upside down in value, and they did not want to lose money, not necessarily that they could not afford an apartment. But they really should rent an apartment that they alternate living in during the weeks they are not in the house. That would have saved Lena from having to have sex in a car in the driveway last week, although I guess they could have gone to hipster dude's place. But then again, no misunderstanding & Oliver in his wedding tux holding flowers in the rain. And where's the fun in that..lol

I like that Martin & the sister have a friendly relationship, and she doesn't automatically hate him & blame him for everything. There was no affair or abuse, they just drifted apart after needing/wanting other things, so no need to be hostile to her BIL of 16 years, as happens on so many other shows.

Doesn’t The Real O’Neals have the same basic premise of Dad lives in garage?  Though they’ve both pretty much moved on romantically.   I prefer that treatment of the marriage.  But I must not have liked the kids or something because I did quit watching.

First basement, then garage. But no switching back and forth.

O'Neals was designed to be this "perfect" family that went off the rails in a heart beat. Which worked for the first season, but season 2, there was a lot of: "Ok, just move on already,  you can only do the entire divorce and son out of the closet so long before everyone accepts it."

The parents didn't resent each other, either.  They were actually pretty good friends.  They just didn't want to be married to each other anymore. It was a much broader comedy than this show, though.

Exactly, but as many people said too, it still focused on the original set up and that's when the writers got lost, because they didn't know what to do next. So, they just retreaded on the same situations.
