S01.E03: Unfinished Business

Was Bruce doing more than watching that oddly creepy porn? I guess he was interacting directly with the woman, but how is that cheating? Is that cheating? I guess it varies from person to person what constitutes cheating. It bugged me that they kept painting him as a cheater. Clearly the details of the pilot and has gone right out of my head.

I DID like that they addressed that the marriage was already failing. It makes it seem like the baby was a "last-ditch save the marriage" kind of thing (which never works) rather than "we both want this right now and it is the perfect time" thing. The former makes it easier to stomach the bestie basically pushing Bruce out and encouraging preggo to file for divorce. The latter would make this show much sadder and paint the best friend in a poor light.

I think the issue with Bruce is that it was an emotional affair even if it wasn't sexual. Maggie was willing to take him back when she thought he was just jerking off, but when she heard him tearfully breaking up with her and promising to send her money for her demo she could tell there was more happening there.

Right--When she first caught him, he was apologetic and it wasn't going to happen again...yadda yadda yadda and then she caught him online with her *again*. He may not have been physically cheating in this instance, but the level of intimacy of what he was doing with this woman through the computer is definitely cheating on some level. That's a difficult place to come back from, as a couple. You still feel like your marital bond is violated even if he never touched her.

The Cosby Show aliases were great, as were a couple other throwaways. Also, since I only really knew them as Wompler/Listler, seeing the things those characters have in common and don't with these ones is neat: this time around the "moveon.org" line and Maggie's overbearingness with Key (forgetting his character's name) were the things that struck me. (I guess I should watch BFF.)

Didn't really work: Brad in the hockey mask. It was too obvious and also doesn't really make sense (why would he put the mask on?).

Probably shouldn't work but did for me: Emma eating four pounds of cheese.

I watched the BFF pilot just now. Hysterical! I think perhaps  NBC should have aired it on USA to begin with. I'm guessing the network had high hopes for it and gave the women a second chance on USA. I look forward to the 3 other episodes. I loved the scene in BFF with Queenetta and Jessica out i front of the brownstone. Good times.

I like this show (PH)

"Phylicia Rashad" made me laugh every single time.  This show had me at Kenny Loggins in the pilot and is continuing to make me laugh.  I love all the weird stuff that you could only get away with a sibling or very close friend.

And when her mom asked is it spelled with a F or a PH and got pissed when it was the same PH...Ha!   But I also loved the Tempest Bledsoe part too. Did not expect her to come back with that name.

Never saw it, but now I want to since I enjoy this comedy team. Is it available on YouTube?  *too lazy to check right now*

Honestly, I would be just as mad and feel just as betrayed if my husband was giving some woman our money as I would if he was having actual real sex with her.  Maybe it's because we don't have much money and work hard for it, I don't know, but I could see ending the marriage over that alone.  Add all the other good reasons, and yeah, I'm down with it.

I guess they had to add the pregnancy / baby in as a "logical" reason for Emma to come back home for good, but I really wish they had contrived something else because I've seen all the episodes so far On Demand now, and love the dynamic between these women so much that I'm afraid bringing a baby into the plot will ruin things.  Of note, I am childless and all my friends have childs.  I am also still friends with many of my close childhood friends but once they had the chirren, our relationships inevitably took a hit because the child becomes the center of everything.  Not saying it shouldn't, or that I am bitter about my friends taking time away from me to raise their offspring, just saying that longtime friendships do change and suffer to a degree once the kids come along because there is simply not enough room for both to get equal attention.  Maybe they will address this on the show, but it's not so much an amusing anecdote as it is a bummer.  I became the weirdo with the pasted-on fake smile, desperately clutching a cup of punch while I stood at the back wall at all the baby showers, who always brought one of the best gifts, but couldn't contribute to any of the mommy conversations or genuinely laugh about poopy diapers, and eventually I would slink out, go home and consume a carton of ice cream while I tried unsuccessfully not to cry.  Not exactly sitcom material, and I don't particularly want to see Emma in that position.  It's true that I am overly sensitive to this side of things, but I would like to think the women who had all the babies wouldn't find that funny, either.

Just a note that Lennon Parham was pregnant for real when they shot the pilot, so (a) the change to her real-life relationship with Jessica St. Clair might have been on her mind when they were coming up with the idea, and (b) it would have been hard to shoot around her! :)

I think Emma is supposed to be living there to help raise the baby, so some of the  "odd one out" factor should be addressed through that route. Of course, she will probably be less committed than the actual mom, but... you never know! Maybe they will mine some humor out of the actual mom being exhausted while the "childless friend' gets really into raising the kid and and turns into "supermom" for a little while.

I don't know; I'm just saying I think the set up is to have Emma involved in the baby situation, rather than excluded by it. That's why she moved in.

If you're into kids, you can be a very involved "auntie" figure or godparent, even if you're not an actual parent, and babysit and participate in other ways. I think the real divide is not so much between people with kids and people without kids, as it is between people who have kids and people who aren't interested in kids.

I didn't realize the actress was pregnant in real life, that makes much more sense now and I see why we weren't able to get more of their "before" friendship out of this.  Still, they do a great job of making their BFF status believable with just their actions.  I do like kids myself, but the fact that I can't have any of my own makes it extremely hard sometimes to be the very involved auntie.  I tried that, and ouch, it hurts like woah.  No matter how much you don't want to be a selfish bratty person who feels sorry for herself, there is something about the situation that makes it impossible not to fall into that puddle of self pity sometimes when you are involved with a family you love deeply who are experiencing things you never will.  Of course, this isn't necessarily the case with Emma.  Maybe she will end up pregnant down the road, and that would put things on a more level field.  I do have faith that if anyone can pull off making this situation funny and heartwarming for someone like me, it's these women.  And I do realize I am a tiny percentage of their demographic.  I will try to focus on the non-baby things that tickle me, like their references to things on Pinterest, which is sort of a big part of my stupid life right now.  Pinterest:  Dangling Perfection in Your Face and Making You Think You Can Fix Your Whole Life By Creating a Gift Center Nook.
