Q: Any scoop on Hondo and Nichelle in upcoming episodes of S.W.A.T.?

Quote

Rochelle Aytes has been busy with her role on CBS’ Watson, and S.W.A.T. has yet to steal her back for an appearance, so off-camera Nichelle continues to be Hondo’s wife and mother to little Vivvie, and “the woman Hondo goes home to every day,” says showrunner Andrew Dettman. But if it’s romance you’re looking for, know that “Alfaro is going to find ‘twin-flame vibes’ with an interesting woman, launching a relationship that will greatly complicate his work life,” Dettman previews. “And a little later on, Tan will continue to advance his relationship with journalist Olivia Navarro” — though one now has to wonder about their future, given that actress Emily Alabi just joined FBI.

I guess that's it. Makes me wonder why they didn't just end it last season.

This is a mess. 😭😭😭😭

'S.W.A.T.' Canceled (Again) By CBS After 8 Season

Quote

Don’t expect another miraculous reprieve; this time the decision is believed to be final — and permanent. The last two years, S.W.A.T. lead studio Sony Pictures Television was able to propose financial terms that were appealing to CBS, sealing 11th hour pickups. This time, I hear CBS did not engage in renewal talks, opting instead to outright end the series.

...

Drama cancellations were inevitable this year as CBS already has two drama slots reserved on next season’s schedule for new series Sheriff Country, a spinoff from Fire Country, and Boston Blue, an extension of the Blue Bloods universe. It also has potential FBI and Equalizer spinoffs in the works and drama pilot Einstein starring Matthew Gray Gubler.

Well, if the show is going to bait other networks to save the show by using the obvious manipulation tactic of making its audience angry that the show doesn't have a proper ending, then maybe it really does deserve to get cancelled all along.

I get it. They're mad that CBS pulled the rug out from underneath them and cancelled the show basically without warning. However, it is the highest mark of pettiness and creative bankruptcy to exploit the audience's anger by using it to dare another network to continue the series. Not only is it risky- because you have no guarantee that another network will save the series- it's the ultimate show of contempt for the audience because you didn't think we were "worthy" enough to get a proper ending for the show.

That's no way to say "thanks", especially to the people (like me) who were there since Day 1.

They’re hoping to recreate the miracles that happened to Magnum PI — getting picked by other network because of the relentless, devoted fans.

The writing has been on the decline for the past 4 seasons. They made fatal mistakes by reducing screen time of fan favorite characters then to eliminate them all together mid-season. Deacon’s retirement arc was a joke.

To me, SWAT isn’t a Hondo’s show. It’s an ensemble. I love the first 4 seasons and there are so many memorable episodes. 💙

Shemar can continue to flirt around but I think it’s time for him to move on.

I wanna see Jay Harrington in other projects — different genre/character.🤞🏻

Shamar Moore naturally responds to the cancellation news by making a video, which included asking other networks, including streaming, to take the show

As longtime fans know, viewer outcry has saved S.W.A.T.in the past — and it’s fair to say the star would love to see lightning strike a third time. Even if it doesn’t, he is grateful.

Was it really viewer outcry?  Wasn’t it Moore essentially playing the race card?

(edited)

I really believe viewer outcry led to the S6 cancellation reversal, since I think that decision wasn't really grounded in the numbers. In S6, it was still among CBS' highest rated shows, so it was not a cancellation that made sense. The only reason why it was cancelled then was because the two studios that produce the show (Sony Pictures and CBS) stopped their renewal negotiations before reaching an agreement, when both knew if they could make the numbers work, the show could still work for them. The fan outcry forced them back to the negotiating table and made them figure out an agreement.

Now? I'm not sure there's a case to say there's a way the negotiating math works. S.W.A.T. is among the lowest rated shows. It deserves cancellation. There's no amount of studio math that will make it work for another season. If another network picks it up, it's only doing so as a PR stunt. Whereas, perhaps, in S6 was in a case where losses could be reversed, that situation doesn't exist this time around.

EDIT- I don't mean to be trashing the show too much. It had a great run, since a lot of shows don't ever get close to a sniff at eight seasons. However, I feel like all the posturing by Shemar Moore and its producers are just theatrics at this point- Hollywood math has spoken and there's nothing to save, so they're wasting their time.

Q: With S.W.A.T. being axed for the third and likely final time, is it possible we’ll get a Street-Chris wedding for the finale? Or at least get to see them and Luca one more time before the show wraps?

Nah, as suggested by the synopsis for the series finale airing May 16 (the second of two episodes, at 10 pm), it will be business as usual for 20-Squad — and that is 100% by design.

As showrunner Andrew Dettmann told me, “Even if we’re no longer airing each week, we want the viewers to feel that Hondo and 20-Squad will go on, that 20-Squad will always be out there taking down the bad guys and protecting the city of L.A.”
