May 2nd will be the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, the first Austin Powers movie. I remember wanting to see it because I was a big fan of Mike Myers on SNL and I loved the Wayne's World movies. I liked the trailers I remember laughing the moment Mike as Austin danced into frame in that ridiculous hair, glasses and outfit to the strains of what I would later learn was Quincy Jones' Soul Bossa Nova but would be known to the world as "The Austin Powers theme". The scenes that made me laugh so hard my sides splitting in that theater was the scene with Will Ferrell as "Mustafa" and the Tom Arnold scene in the bathroom "Who Does Number Two Work For?!" It actually didn't do that well when it first came out. I was laughing in a nearly empty theater. It only became a huge hit when it came out on video. The first will always be my favorite, the second The Spy Who Shagged Me I have some problems with and I enjoyed the last one Goldmember.

The Hollywood Reporter just published an oral history:
'Austin Powers' at 20: Mike Myers, Jay Roach, More Spill Secrets in Shagadelic Oral History

This scene with the late, great "Carrie Fisher" is also one of my favorites. "An evil petting zoo?"

It sucks that Mike Myers is a dick but I didn't know that back when I watched the movies. I still love the crap out of them, quote them all of the time. My favorite is the 2nd one but my favorite Powers Girl is Beyonce. "I'm Foxxy Cleopatra and I'm a whole lot of woman!" She had just the perfect amount of camp in her performance. Loved her.

The memory of these films is ruined once you learn that Mike Myers is a creep. The Dr. Evil is stolen from Dana Carvey too.

Tell us more!

Yes, need to know more! I knew Myers was very odd but did not know he was a creep as well.

I really enjoyed these films, Goldmember is my favorite and every line by Michael Caine is brilliant. "You, you don't even have a nametag, just lie down right now."

Dana talks about it and he admits he was a little miffed back then but he now has a better perspective about it. I think Mike should have definitely asked Dana's permission first:

Foxxy deserved her own spin-off.

Oh man, I loved these movies. It's a pity that Vanessa turned out to be a Fembot because she was my favorite Powers girl.

Mine too. One of my problems with the second movie is how they got rid of Vanessa. Not only did her relationship with Austin end but she wasn't even real! No offense to Heather Graham but I liked and Elizabeth Hurley in the first one and thought she had better chemistry with Myers. I  did enjoy Beyonce as Foxxy Cleopatra in Goldmember though.

I'd watch the hell out of that.

Seconded. It would have been a hell of a lot better than that aborted James Bond spinoff featuring Halle Berry's character from Die Another Day.

Yeah Myers is a jerk but he's nowhere near as bad as the guy who played henchman "Random Task". Damn:
