S02.E05: Monkey Leaps Through Mist

Man. I hope this unfinished business Sunny is leaving behind doesn't bite him in the ass later.  It's nice to not want to kill for any old reason, but Sunny doesn't need new enemies tracking him into the Badlands.  I'd hate for Moon or that nasty Mech leader to pop up when it is time for Sunny to deal with Quinn.

So if Veil had been able to get through the gate last week, she would have just walked into a minefield. It really was locked for her own protection! Feel doubly bad for poor Edgar now.

This probably was not the intention of the showrunners, but seeing the prevalence of outright slavery in the outlying territories puts the serfdom of the Cogs in perspective. It still sucks, but given the limited choices they have, most people would be better off with Quinn than on the other side of the wall. The Widow made life under Chau sound just as bad as beyond the wall, though.

Speaking of geography, I hate the maps on the AMC website. Officially, the Badlands are huge - they make it look like the Badlands are everything west of the Mississippi/I-55, east of I-25, south of I-70, and north of I-10. That's like, what, parts of 8 states, maybe 1000 miles square? How do the Barons control so much territory with what looks like a few dozen Clippers each? Watching Season 1, I assumed they were all in one river valley. I'm just going to assume the website in non-canon, otherwise I have to accept that MK walked from, like, Little Rock (the Fort) to Tulsa (the Butterfly Sanctuary) and back in like a day and a half back in Season One.

At first I thought the alliance with Quinn would be a dumb move on the Widow's part, but the more I think about it, the more I think, he just took out her biggest enemy. And she hated Ryder even in Season One, when Quinn attacks her for putting a hit on Ryder, she told him "we both know I was doing you a favor." Yes, I've watched that fight many times. While we know him as a total crazy person, the Widow hasn't seen him in all his glory - and possibly, pre-tumor Quinn wasn't quite as out there as the Quinn know and love. Possibly he even spoke with a believable accent back then.

Just Random Bits:

So now we see where Ryder picked up some of his strategy skills: Lydia apparently knows the location of Quinn’s secret complex (is this Ryder’s bunker she mentioned), but she doesn’t know enough to try not walking in the front door.

Not sure where her plan was going to go from that point anyway, even if the entry hallway had not been booby-trapped. She had maybe 25-30 men tops which was probably about what Quinn could have been expected to have. Unless she caught them by complete surprise, doesn’t seem like capturing Quinn would have been a given.

Speaking of Ryder: Ghost Ryder is far more interesting that Alive Ryder. Too bad he had to be dead to find himself.

The wound the girl’s mother received would look like it would need more medical treatment that what Sunny and Bajie have at their disposal. Where’s Veil when you need her? Oh yeah, kissing Quinn and making a jailbreak during Lydia’s “attack”. Good luck out there amongst all those cogs, marauders, and other assorted scum!

That curved knife that was at Veil's throat?  It's made of plastic.  It's an FGX Karambit, one of the Nightshade series from Cold Steel.  Make no mistake, it is still quite lethal, but more as a puncturing/stabbing weapon rather than a slicing tool.  (For example, there is no way it could have cut the cords that bound her.)  It's not my favourite knife of the Nightshade series (that would be the FGX Skean Dhu), but the Steel Tiger that it's modeled after is quite scary!  Here are my two FGX Karambits, bracketing my Steel Tiger...

One (good?  bad?) thing about the FGX knives is that being non metallic, they can't be detected easily with a metal detector...

Yay, Sunny's back!  The second he saw that little girl, you knew he was gonna wind up getting his clipper on, even if he was trying to convince himself that wasn't; his disgust with Nas was so visceral.  And that fight was awesome.  I think this season has been using the slow-mo a little too liberally, and it was great to go back to a fight that was more high-energy throughout.  (And good that there are enough terrible people in the Badlands and outer territories to prick at Sunny's conscience, because new leaf or not, I'd hate to lose the scenes of his incredible fighting skills.)

The Widow teaming up with Quinn?!  This is gonna be so crazy - I love it.

Gotta love how Quinn goes all Macbeth after running his son through with a sword, and it's used to show the symptoms of his tumor worsening.  Because of COURSE Quinn would only lose it with guilt over murdering his son if there's something wrong with his brain.  Also, Ghost Ryder was awesome.

Did Veil just run out of the frying pan and into the fire?  Although I can't imagine she'll get away.  Having kissed Quinn for her own survival, it seems unlikely that the plot would immediately separate them - one way or another, I'm sure she'll have to deal with Quinn's increasing obsession with her (eww.)  Hurry back, Sunny!  Your family needs you!

Did I miss a scene with M.K?  Last episode he was going through the dreamscape and now he's escaping the monastery.  For about half the episode I thought all that stuff was in his head.  I'm still not sure that it isn't.

Good thing Nos was Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil!!!! so Sunny had to fight his men.  If he'd just been a smuggler and not a child pimper, we wouldn't have had the fight.
In shows like this, there are always prostitutes -- either happy hookers run by caring madams or slaves forced into it at an ungodly age.  Nowhere inbetween, or, ya know, just leave the damn things out.

There was a brief scene of him doing the stick shtick on the rocks but when the girl called them all in, he had disappeared.
Nice of him to cut down and bury the one guy, but did he leave the others hanging?

This is pretty much a new thing for Sunny, isn't it? He fought this time not because he was ordered to do it or forced to defend himself, but because he made his own decision to defend some vulnerable people.

Whereas before, he would stand by and let his girlfriend's parents get murdered.

Maybe this will teach him that his skills can be used for good. He doesn't have to consider it evil. You don't have to be either a brutal killing machine or a total pacifist. There are things in between.

I mean, it seems obvious to us, the audience, right? But in their world, it appears that being a hero, a defender of the defenseless, is a foreign concept. They only know that you use fighting skills to serve yourself or serve someone else. That's the code they live by. Having any other ideas makes you an outlier and is frowned upon.

True dat.

The Widow totally dissed Waldo.  Tilda showing up and throwing her the sword helped, but she was fighting pretty well without it.  On the other hand, if she' actually taken Waldo's advice and not pissed off the other female Baron, she might have won the vote.  It's OK to look weak if it makes you stronger.  And she can't protect her current refugees, much less new ones, if she's banished or dead.

Hopefully, Morgan from walking dead will not meet sunny.....

That's true! While he's been the show's central protagonist, he's never really been a hero before.

As soon as the girl showed up, there was no way Sunny wasn't going to leave without her and after beating down the majority of the goons to do so.  Pretty good fight scene, but leaving the main guy alive is probably going to bring a whole heap of trouble on him and Baije.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the mother dies from that stab wound, so it's probably going to turn into a road trip starring a former clipper, a runaway child, and the star of many Edgar Wright films.

The Widow wants to form an unholy alliance with Quinn?  That's.... interesting.  Might work (for a short time at least.)  I'm worried for Waldo and his fall form grace.  I don't think The Widow will got out of her way to harm him for what happened, but I can easily see TIlda finding ways to make him look even worse to The Widow, and as this show has established, getting on her bad side is not a good thing!

Speaking of unholy alliances, Ryder's death has caused Jade and Lydia to team up and get revenge for his death.  Not off to the best start though, since Quinn wisely booby trapped his place, and just blew a whole bunch of Jane's clippers sky high.  On the other hand, Veil has now escaped and Quinn has an imaginary Ryder stuck in his head, so no one is really in the best shape at the moment.

Oh, look: another M.K. scene.  Yawn.
