As someone who gave up watching New Girl when it abruptly stopped being even remotely funny in its third season, I am not looking forward to this crossover.  Still, I'd rather this than any more of Jason Mantzoukas playing that character that he always plays.

I hope it's funny for all of us who don't know the "New Girl" characters. I've never watched the show.

Winston is the show's strongest character and he's an LAPD cop, so if the crossover leans heavily on him somehow, it should be good. If it's Jess nonsense, probably not as strong.

And they can't use Damon Wayans Jr. because he plays different roles on the two shows.

No, he made a guest appearance recently but that's it. My point (mostly a joke) was that they can't make use of the character of Coach as a link between the shows, which otherwise might have been tempting as (in the New Girl story) he left the loft to live in NYC.

I've only seen the pilot for New Girl (hated the actor who played the love interest), so I don't really care. Could work, I guess, but I'm not really excited.
