Good Thinking: Deeper Philosophical Questions

Recommended Posts

Do soulmates live together?  Jianyu is supposed to be a monk who's basically forsaken earthly pleasures, so that would explain why he'd be living at Tahani's mansion. And that couple that came to live at Eleanor's place during the sinkhole crisis shared a home.

But does Chidi live with Eleanor regularly? On the one hand, kinda seems so. Not only have we never seen his place, I'm not sure it's even been mentioned that he has a house of his own. On the other hand, Eleanor's house was only designed with (real) Eleanor in mind, from its cozy size and style to having a "clown nook".

And that makes me wonder, do souldmates have sex? I think the swinger couple does (from a prior episode), but no one else seems to talk about it.

They've shown us the exterior of his place, which is in the village. He pointed it to Eleanor and chided her for never having taken any interest in finding out where he lives.

I've ranted about this in an episode thread...this inconsistency is odd. Why do some soul mates apparently have one home (Jianyu/Tahani) and others don't (Eleanor/Chidi)? How can everyone get their perfect home unless they live solo? Isn't it a weird waste of space to build everyone their own home assuming at least some (if not most/all) of soul mates would eventually live together? Does soul mate have a different meaning than romantic partner in the Good Place?

Well, the Good Place is very magical and in any case, there aren't that many people to house since not many people get to end up there.

I will assume that The Good Place is a metaphysical construct (by what or whom might not be relevant), rather than a physical location, and thus is not limited by the rules of physical environments.  Perhaps The Bad Place is a tenement building with thin walls, no water, and Trevor in the "penthouse".

I wonder about the purpose of food in the good place vs. the bad place. Wouldn't food be irrelevant, at least in terms of nourishment? In the good place, it seems to serve as a pleasurable indulgence without consequences - you can eat whatever you want and not gain weight or worry about your health because you're already dead - but what about in the bad place? Real Eleanor mentioned that every time she went to eat, the food turned into spiders as it reached her mouth. But why the need to eat at all? Or maybe that was her personal version of hell - hungry all the time but with nothing but spiders to eat?
