methodwriter85 August 18, 2014 Share August 18, 2014 (edited) Pretty awesome that The Fault in Our Stars has made 272 million dollars worldwide against a 12 million dollar budget. I wonder how many knock-offs will come in the next couple of years. If I Stay could almost be considered one except it seems more concurrent. I wonder if they're having conversations to try and figure out how they can possible turn The Fault in Our Stars into a franchise. LOL. Boyhood is plugging along quite nicely for a movie that was made for 4 million dollars. It's not some massive blockbuster but it's definitely given Richard Linklater a nice boost and reminded people why he's the king of indie dramas that touch something true. Another John Green book, Paper Towns, is going to be made into a movie due in 2015, with a lot of the same team who worked on The Fault in Our Stars and a supporting actor from the movie as a star this time. I guess that's as close as you can get to a series feeling with books that aren't actually related to each other. I wonder if Boyhood will end up not being on DVD in three months like most movies these days, but get re-released/expanded in the fall/winter first, to ride possible awards momentum. I enjoyed the movie, but don't see any reason it has done so well since release except for the lack of competition. Other studios may write it off as a Marvel success story, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles overperformed, too, so possibly. Divergent was launched in March after The Hunger Games made $400M+ as a spring opener in 2012. OTOH, maybe GotG had so much room to succeed because May/June/July 2014 hadn't already brought 2-3 $300M+ hits, and in a more typical year, an August tentpole would underwhelm. I enjoyed the movie, but don't see any reason it has done so well since release except for the lack of competition. The big reason it's done so well, is that it's just a pure fun superhero movie. That's what should be taken away from it, hopefully Warner takes from that. People want fun in superhero media. 1 Link to comment

Dejana October 12, 2014 Author Share October 12, 2014 (edited) Box Office Mojo is back up! Not sure if it was mere technical difficulties (though they usually don't inspire hours/days radio silence from site runners) or if a scheme to put BOM's data behind the IMDb Pro paywall was walked back after negative feedback from the industry (unlike the time IMDb nuked BOM's forums and blocked them from the Internet Archive, the entertainment media actually noticed this move). BoxOffice.com and the-numbers.com also have years of box office info in case BOM disappears on everyone again. Box Office Guru has been around even longer than Mojo; its archives consist of weekend box office write-ups that go back to mid-1997. Not so great for comparing pure numbers, but unbeatable time-capsule reactions back to the days when the $100M weekend seemed impossible and people thought Titanic would be lucky to break even. Dejana October 19, 2014 Author Share October 19, 2014 (edited) Wow, St. Vincent is a big box office stinker, isn't it? And Birdman is even worse, despite the critics salivating all over it. St. Vincent's box office isn't setting all-time records for limited release but its performance could hardly be described as bombing. And 100K per theater for a live-action film opening in under ten theaters is pretty much a box office dream come true in the world of small dramas. Birdman ranks 19th in all-time per-theater average and much higher if you take out all the animated flicks Disney ran in their first weeks in 1-2 theaters with sky-high ticket prices. Ultimately it could go the way of Inside Llewyn Davis ($13.2M total) or American Hustle ($150M), but it will probably land somewhere in between. Edited October 19, 2014 by Dejana Link to comment

Dejana November 9, 2014 Author Share November 9, 2014 (edited) Superheroes trump space, but I was honestly expecting better results for both, though the reviews with Interstellar were a bit of a warning sign. Dejana November 23, 2014 Author Share November 23, 2014 (edited) The Hunger Games franchise turns out not to be immune to the split finale blahs, or maybe it was the lack of games (and showings in IMAX) this time around? Anyway, it's still the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, but Guardians of the Galaxy might end up the #1 movie of the year. Lionsgate should be thinking its plans to make Allegiant a two-parter very carefully... AimingforYoko November 24, 2014 Share November 24, 2014 Lionsgate should be thinking its plans to make Allegiant a two-parter very carefully... Depending on how it holds over thanksgiving, this should gross around $325m domestically. If you figure the finale will do around $400m, that's $725m total domestic gross. A single Mockingjay movie optimistically could hope for $500m, so even with the added marketing and distribution cost of breaking it into two movies, this makes business sense, if not artistic sense. For The Hunger Games, yes, but with the Divergent series...the first one cost $85 million and made a little under $290 million. The Fault In Our Stars made more globally and cost $12 million (though no franchise potential, obviously). The overseas markets for Divergent might expand, but if it doesn't explode and domestically, the increase is minor at best... Sequels tend to cost more and Allegiant is...not the most popular book with its fanbase. Not just "that was a stupid baby name" or "the epilogue was dumb" reviled, but fans telling non-readers not to bother with the series at all, reviled. Yet they did still show up for the first movie, so maybe they'll buy tickets and just complain the whole time. If it had a budget like The Maze Runner ($34 million) I would say go for it, but with the budget, box office and marketing... Eventually, I think this "split the last part in two" gambit is going to have at least one outright failure. Edited November 25, 2014 by Dejana Link to comment
absnow54 November 24, 2014 Share November 24, 2014 I agree that splitting Mockingjay is one that doesn't necessarily make sense, but is a split that will definitely earn the studio money. The series is a world wide phenomena and Jennifer Lawrence's star power has shot the franchise into the stratosphere. They could probably film her reading the phone book and still make a profit. I think Shailene Woodley has talent and draw as well, but Divergent is a much weaker story, and as mentioned Allegiant is a very polarizing book (and in my experience, a deal breaker for a lot of readers who were on the fence about the story.) There were a lot of YA films being launched last year, The Mortal Instruments, Vampire Academy, Beautiful Creatures... but none seemed to stick. Divergent was the first in the genre to make some money back, and with The Hunger Games ending in 2015, I think they wanted to capitalize on the remaining franchise. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Insurgent made all its money back let alone any of the Allegiant films. Divergent had some momentum, but it was never Twilight or Hunger Games worthy. 1 Link to comment

Divergent had some momentum, but it was never Twilight or Hunger Games worthy. If the trailer that played with Mockingjay is any indication, Insurgent is in trouble. For one thing the trailer doesn't mention Divergent and there's nothing in that trailer that would make a non-book reader know what it was or want to see it. I read all the books and thought they just got worse and worse. I'm hoping they don't try to drag Allegiant out into two movies and that they make significant changes to the script. 1 Link to comment
