As much as I would like to think that is possible-why should the jewelers be bearing the burden?  If they kick 25% of retail back in that is generous.  An $8,500.00 necklace becomes a $2250 donation.  That is generous.  It is the nonsense of "donating" $30,000.00 chartered jets and $25,000.00 one night suites to talent and honorees is offensive.  It is just a thing with me.  Take a piece of art-all the artist really had in it is the cost of canvas, paint and framing.  The fact it can sell for $5,000.00 is pretty much pure profit to the charity.  The artist has already taken the deduction for the cost of goods.

Some artists will actually donate a piece of art for sale/auction for a charity fundraising event and use the market value or how much it sells for as a tax write off. I make some higher end jewelry pieces (nothing any where as expensive as we saw) and I get asked to donate pieces for charities all the time. That said, I really doubt any of those pieces were outright donated.

Nor were they represented to be.  This shopping for charity has been popular for quite sometime.   It works out well for the supplier of goods and the charity.   I know artists do the deduction-but they should check with their accountants.

I'm sure those Chinese villagers are going to change their ways after they hear what a bunch of bourgeoisie imperialist western capitalist pigs said about them.

Actually, the Chinese government has been trying to crack down on this celebration for a while now and Social Media is helping the cause. I won't post links because they are too disturbing, but the numbers of dogs that have been tortured and killed, have decreased tremendously because of the information being put out there on Social Media.

Any pressure would be domestic pressure.
