Northanger Abbey (2007) - General Discussion

Recommended Posts

When they had all the new JAs a few years ago, that is the only production that I liked.  I think I still have a copy at home - I'll have to look tonight.

I liked Persuasion for one reason: Rupert Penry-Jones.

The one thing I disliked about  NA 2007 version is that I watched  the Robin Hood season 1 DVD a few months prior and when Mr. Thorpe appeared on screen, I kept seeing him as Royston White, screaming "I am Royston White. I fight for Robin Hood and the King".

That is a good reason - I'm now rewatching Whitechappel.   If I remember correctly, NA 2007 came the closest to the spirit of the books - the rest had too many mistakes.  I remember watching Mansfield Park and during one scene, turning off the tv in horror and posting on TWOP how WRONG the production was.

NA 2007 and Persuasion came the closest to the books. There were things in both that were altered for tv.  Mansfield Park was the worst. I think Billie Piper's Fanny came across as having some kind of mental disability rather than being reserved and shy.

If I remember correctly, my issues with Persuasion was that they had Anne run through Bath after she read The Letter (which Anne Elliot would never have done) to find Capt Wentworth and didn't they end it with him buying Kellynch Hall for her.  Which, one - no.  And two - it was entailed.

Heh, I still remember with fondness my posts on TWOP on why the P&P movie with Keira K was just wrong wrong wrong.  I had enough posts on it to write a book.

Yes, the Bath Marathon.......where Anne ran through the streets of Bath running into various characters who summed up all the loose ends for her: "Girl, did you hear Mrs. Clay just shacked up with your cousin, Mr. Elliot! Call me when you get home!" run, run, run, "Heya! Tell Capt. W. thanks for the loan. Now I can move outta this dump! I'll send you an e" run, run, run "Yo! Dad and I are going home tonight!" run run run.  IIRC, that girl wasn't out of breath, sweating (pardon me, perspiring) or even had a hair out of place when she got to the finish line. Let's not forget the Bath Marathon ended with Anne giving Wentworth the infamous Guppy Mouth Kiss. (It was the ill-informed who thought the MT thread on TWoP was too snobbish and stuffy to be snarky.)  And the final scene where the carriage rolls up the driveway and parks in front of Kellynch looked badly green-screened.

The Tilney-Catherine kiss rates a 10 out 10 on the cuteness scale.

What I remember most of Northhanger Abbey 2007 is that horrid Bath Marathon, with poor Anne Elliot chasing all over Bath searching for Wentworth.  Awful!

Persuasion had the Bath Marathon. NA 2007 had nekkid Isabella waking up in Capt.Tilney's bed.

I also objected to the ending of the Hawkins Persuasion. Reclaiming Kellynch is not what I want for Anne. It's better for her to leave her home and see the world. Which is poignant, given that Austen never got to.

I don't remember much about the Mansfield Park, just the vague recollection that Piper's Fanny never once Put. Her. Hair. Up. Blasphemy.

Loved the 2007 version of NA.  Love JJ Field as Tilney.  His portrayal of Tilney has elevated Tilney into my top 3 for Austen heroes.  Was surprised to find out that he's married to Neve Campell.  The Catherine-Tilney kiss at the end is super adorable.

Love Persuasion and yes, one of the main reasons is RPJ.  Oh he is just so beautiful to look at.  I could do without the scene of Anne running all over Bath at the end and the super super super slow kiss that followed, but those things still don't diminish my love for that version.

Northanger Abbey was on my local PBS this weekend, and I think I squeaked with pure joy.  Ninety minutes of fun.  Felicity is adorable and JJ's Tilney is a loveable goofball oasis in a sea* of tortured, brooding Austen heroes (I mean, I love me some Darcy & Wentworth & co., but sometimes it's like: Boys!!  Chillax!).  And that proposal smooch under the arbor is yummy.

*ummm...I mean, "oasis in a desert".  Pardon the water-in-water description.

My recording cut off before the end - Catherine was with Tilney going to the neighbors (name escapes me).  Argh! What did I miss?  TIA!

You missed my favorite part! Tilney proposing, and them living happily ever after. You can watch the scene here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yw_FZrOZGY
