I Believe the Children Are Our Future

I never blame different episode for another episode's failure. Personally, I just don't care for much of anything after 99 Problems. I think the episodes start getting very disjointed and are kind of a mess. There are moments of almost pure gold in all of them, but as overall episodes, I find them lacking. I love Death's introduction in Two Minutes To Midnight and I love me some Death in general, but a couple of good scenes does not a complete and/or good episode make, IMO. When stacked up against The End, Changing Channels, Good God Y'All and a couple of others the choosing gets a whole lot easier for me.

 

Interesting. The only really weak episode for me in the last group was "The Devil You Know," mostly for me because Dean was too off his game in that one. I think for me, I like motivations that I can understand and/or make me feel something, and the last group of episodes did that for me. In contrast, I'm not feeling as much "Good God, Y'All" love for the same reasons. The "Spirit in the Sky" scene was great and I got the Sam/Dean conflict (though personally I thought the episode made it a bit over-the-top angsty) and I also liked Sam's conclusion at the end of the episode to bench himself, so those parts were great, but I was not at all feeling War. I found him to be unimpressive as a horseman, and the "you want to be more powerful than everyone" speech he was spouting to Sam made very little sense to me based on everything we saw in season 4. Sam's motivations were much more complex than his hubris in my opinion, and I'm not sure where that "more powerful than everyone" stuff came from, because even based on Sam and Dean's relationship that makes little sense to me. (Reference "All Hell Breaks Loose, Pt 1" : Sam is not showing he wants to be the leader of that situation. He does it because he has to, and takes no pleasure in it. He'd rather Dean be there to be the leader, and Sam has no interest in tapping into his power like Ava did and is horrified by the idea.) Sam wants control over his life, I agree, but everyone? I don't buy it, and I didn't like the episode trying to sell me on that when to me the evidence character-wise wasn't there, so I guess I'm likely being unfairly harsh on GGY'A for that, but it is the episode that first tried to sell me on that, and I resent it for that. Not my favorite of Sera's and I think weirdly out of her usual in terms of Sam's character. And in general, I tend to like her episodes... this time the preachy part here really annoyed me, because it contradicted some of her other episodes (of which, ironically "All Hell Breaks Loose, Pt 1 is one, so...) For me character motivation is important, so it annoys me when motivation gets all muddied up and contradictory with no useful pay off.

 

Sorry about that, I might have gotten rambly, but hopefully it made a little sense as to my feelings on the episodes.

I agree it's time to move on, but hee about the episode ultimately not going anywhere - some of those episodes can be a favorite for me (and maybe you, too since for me at least "The Curious Case.." may apply?). So a eulogy:

 

I loved the fun of "I Believe the Children Are Our Future" and even though the serious came somewhat abruptly with the story of Jesse's origins, I didn't think the episode was too schizophrenic. I liked Castiel in this, and his motivations felt true. Sam was consistent here, and I liked that he so wanted to believe that Jesse could make the right choice (very Sam of him), and I think the fact that Jesse did in the end make the right choice really did help Sam keep the faith that things could get resolved and was one of the things that he could hold on to later on when he needed to think that things could be stopped/fixed. And then there was Dean: he was just a breath of much needed levity here. He seemed to have so much fun with this case in the beginning - the ham, the nurse and the aftermath (hee - he was so going to use Sam's razor), the buzzer joke. He embraced the weird and went with it, making lemonade out of lemons as Dean is want to do. Maybe after that  "Fallen Idols" to me out of character (Dean self-righteous jerk, Sam insensitive jerk) mess, this episode was just such a relief, perhaps I like it more than it deserves because of that. And that's on top of the cute little girl, the kid playing Jesse being great, and that awesome, creepy-ass tooth fairy.

Although I see your point that the antichrist himself didn't go anywhere, I did like that the episode explored the difference of philosophy between Sam and Dean and Castiel. It was interesting for me to see Sam returning to a less Machiavellian stance - perhaps having learned from his mistakes - to more of a Dean stance of not using means he considered immoral - such as killing Jesse - to "win." Of course Castiel had more investment there, but he still was willing to kill first and ask questions later. I think that incidents in this episode effected Cas, too, in that he gained some trust of Dean's and Sam's judgement when it turned out that Jesse did make the right choice... I think it went towards Castiel having more faith in Dean and Sam and people in general than he did before (and so perhaps had some affect on what came after and his decision to commit to Team Free Will.) So plot-wise I agree it didn't go anywhere, but for me it did have a point/effect (and more than one) on what came afterwards for both Sam and Castiel at the least.

Although Two Minutes has some great moments, it isn't enough for me to want to save it nor do I put it above the ones I want to save so it is an easy one for me to vote down.  I do have some others that I will hit to make it fair as long as my favs are safe.  When it gets to my top three....ouch!

Well I LIKED Swan Song so of course I'll eulogize it!  I loved the use of the brotherly bond to break Lucifer's hold on Sam. I loved Dean riding up bold as brass in the Impala and saying if he couldn't save Sam or the world, he was at least not going to let him (Sam) be alone when it happened. (***sob***).  And of course it manged to have a funny moment in the last 10 mins with "Hey, Assbutt!".  So for these and many more reasons, I found Swan Song to be an excellent and underrated episode.

Left coasting again and the plane got in late... expect me to try to maintain posts around 10pm eastern time (even tho I'm on the west coast). " Hi, my name is SueB and I have temporal dissonance."

 

There's only two more episodes on the list that I even occasionally skip -- so since everybody has to get out of the pool eventually, I feel less bad killing them off.

 

Dean Men Don't Wear Plaid: The ONLY think I disliked I about this episode is the title.  Because it's a funny Steve Martin movie -- and this episode is funny for like 5 minutes and then it's just PAIN PAIN PAIN.  But what a fantastic introduction to Sheriff Jodi Mills. I love that woman.  Yes, she's in denial for a few days. But then she sucks it up and gets the job done despite suffering HORRENDOUS loss*. And Bobby, with Karen. And she makes pie. And he combs his hair. And .....I'd like to send a hellhound into Lucifer's cage and tie a steak around Luci for this one.  **sigh** But family don't end with blood and the boys will be there to give Bobby the purpose he needs to keep on keeping on.  Great episode.

 

*NOTE: Psychiatrists will tell you that "death of a child" is the worse loss for humans. Everything else is measured against that extreme trauma.

Vote when you can, and I haven't voted everyday.  Hope the family crisis gets better soon.  The vote isn't rocket science and doesn't represent everyone, just those willing to cast a ballot.  So vote when you can, because you know Dean is counting on ya!  :)

 

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - Love how Dean just takes charge of getting Bobby's house back in order.  Sam asking if he will be okay and Dean not sugar coating it.  It is a nice ep with some really strong moments.  I'd say going out in the mid range is about right.

How did Curious Case survive the day? Well... I'm nothing if not the Terminator it seems. One more til half-way point.

 

So The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. Frankly, I don't think I'm the best to eulogize so I will give it a try but would appreciate a second eulogy if someone is willing. 

 

Some of the wonderful elements of this episode: Grumpy Old Men: Supernatural.  Having Dean and Bobby compare complaints was fantastic.  Of course Dean would whine about his sciatica. And Sammy -- pulling a fast one on the ancient warlock poker player.  It was an excellent fake-out the first time watching.  Although I wasn't too invested in his wife's story, I did like that it explored the consequences of near-immortality.  And DAMN, but the Irish warlock was hot -- wouldn't throw him out of bed for eating crackers (sorry, I was briefly lost in the shallow end of the pool).  Favorite moment: Dean and Bobby's final heart-to-heart.  Bobby needed to hear that and Dean needed to say that.  I wish Sam had a bigger role in that element of the story but it makes sense from a character perspective that Dean could guilt Bobby into not committing suicide. And we get a nice call-back later in the season, which adds depth to Bobby's plight.  So, a good episode with an interesting angle to view mortality.
