Always the executioner... see, I really LIKE S4. So downvoting anything for me is just housekeeping.  Personally, I would have kept Lucifer Rising ahead of several on the list, but the will of the tribe has spoken, so... off it goes.

 

Personally I felt Lucifer Rising was a good episode -- with one exception.  The exception was how far they pushed with Sam and the Nurse.  It was horrible to watch. What made it worse for me was not that Zachariah was a smarmy dick who made him think Dean hated him (and I am forever bitter we never got any indication that was ever cleared up), no what made it worse was after hearing the faux message, THIS is when Sam presses ahead.  For me, it makes it worse. Sam isn't riding a demon blood high at this moment.  It's a rationale act and it's character assassination in my book.  /rant off.  OTOH, I do want to talk about some of the awesomeness that IS this episode.  First we get the beautiful room and it's creepy changing portraits. I loved how they shifted when Zach started confessing the whole truth. The Dean/Cas scenes are fan-fucking-tastic. As is the moment when Chuck puts his hand on Cas' shoulder. I thought Lillith was great at the end there -- taunting Sam to "bite". Man, was she evil.   I do like that Ruby uses the Dumbo analysis in this episode although I think it creates a great deal of LOL!Canon issues regarding Sam and Demon Blood.  I don't care for Genevieve's delivery of "I'm awesome" but the character is not wrong.  She really did pull off a masterful con operation. I like that the season ended with the two killing Ruby and then in such deep shit with Lucifer rising.    *runs off to rewatch episode*

ETA: Watched again, skipped the nurse bits.  Can't believe I found something new.  I didn't realize that Dean is so shocked at the whole "we want Armageddon" plot that his hand actually shakes a bit and he holds onto the table.

@SueB, I think you crossed posts with @DittyDotDot, because I don't think the numbers are adding up, so I'm going to try to make them the way I think they should be, and please someone double-check my math.

 

Some discussion, because I can't resist - this (see the **) has bugged me for a while, and I feel that I need to rant.

It's interesting that I agree with you that there was Sam character assassination in this season, but not necessarily on the means/method. I agree that it was hard to watch Sam and the nurse, but for me, I interpreted the entire thing perhaps differently. I agree Sam did decide to go ahead after the fake phone call, and that it was a conscious choice, but I saw it as Sam accepting that Dean would "finish" things if needed. In other words, if Sam became a monster like he thought that he would, Sam believed after hearing the fake message that Dean would finally kill him (Sam) when he wouldn't before (as in "Born Under A Bad Sign"). Sam could feel more confident that it would end there via Dean, so then he could move forward with the killing Lilith plan. It was dark, I agree, but for me we had been working up to that from "Jus In Bello." Here Sam was willing to make that "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" choice with both the nurse and himself being the few. I think the demon blood affected Sam in terms of him maybe more needing the revenge and by giving him a false sense of confidence that his decision was right, but I always thought that the decision was Sam's. Surprisingly though, I saw this as more of a philosophical difference - with Sam as more Machiavellian and Dean not - than character assassination, especially since they had been working up to this since the end of season 3, and Sam continues to show Machiavellian tendencies afterwards as in "Changing Channels" when he is willing to deal with what they think is the Trickster in order to gain help with stopping the apocalypse whereas Dean thinks that's an awful idea.

 

** Where I thought the character assassination came from was where the writers had Sam repeatedly throughout the season mocking Dean's hell experiences, calling Dean weak, verbally beating Dean down, etc. And this was continuing on into this episode, which made me annoyed, and is the reason I don't like it more. I was hoping there would be some showing of Sam feeling badly for how he'd acted concerning Dean there at the end, but nope, nothing. Of course Sam made the wrong call (that was typical for the show with the big decisions for it's entire run at that point), but the writers made sure Sam was a jerk to Dean while doing it and didn't give Sam's character any chance to show remorse for that in the end. For me that was the character assassination. It was making Sam ugly for no apparent reason (except maybe Dean angst). It wasn't a difference in the character's philosophy - it was just ugly. Period. And that pissed me off, and made me not like season 4 so much as a whole. (end of rant) With that said, I'm not too sorry to see the episode go. My next target - that other ugly episode promoting this...

I have a grudge against Lucifer Rising because of the fucking awful "boo hoo princess" bullshit out of Bobby's mouth. I don't think I've ever really forgiven Bobby for that either.  I did love all the stuff between Dean and Cas and finally ganking Ruby 2.0 who I really loathed.

Thanks Awesome04000 for fixing the score. Hmmm, I thought the blood and desperate need to rationalize his choices is what drove Sam to belittle Dean. As he told both Chuck and Ruby, he felt it was on his shoulders cause Dean was too weak. When the reality was that he was looking to justify his otherness and resolve the anger he had inside.

It's complicated though and I can see why the kid who idolized his brother, to the point of trying to be ready to be like him when he was sent to hell, seems out of place with the crap he said in the Siren episode. Yes that was under influence but it was, I think, in the direction of his mindset.

Well, how ever Sam got thrown under the bus, he was there IMO.

@SueB - I found that I had more to say - hmmm guess that rant wasn't enough - so I'm taking your quote over to the all seasons thread to discuss there so as not to derail the thread there.

 

To summarize (so you can skip it if you want) - It pretty much says that I'm likely blaming "Lucifer Rising" unfairly for season 4's failing, but I think in general I put more expectation on a finale and expect it to deliver, and in this area - one where Sam could've been given a sentence or two of regret - I thought "Lucifer Rising" missed the boat, and I wasn't able to forgive it for that.

Sorry, I just can't let "It's a Terrible Life" die yet. Don't you know, tactic #1, attack the one someone loves so you can force votes to try to save your favorite.  :)   Besides you've been after Head of Pin for a while, Poor Pins are feeling very unloved.  Also sometimes you have to sacrifice one you love in order to save the one you can't let go, so vote away, this would be very boring if we all loved same ep.  Although it does seem as if we do have an agreement on the top ep for the last few seasons. 

 

OOOPS  I almost reported myself...good thing there is double check on that,   silly me, hitting the wrong button.

 

Next season, I think it will be every man or woman for themselves!  RUN!  ;)

I understand how you feel awesomO4000. I am going down fighting for On the Head of a Pin.  I'm sure it's not long for the world.  I would stick with Terrible Life over Monster Movie but Monster Movie is just too much fun.

Besides you've been after Head of Pin for a while, Poor Pins are feeling very unloved.

 

Oh definitely. I started out spreading around the negative votes, but once the piling on against "It's a Terrible..." started in earnest, I gave up on that and went on the attack. Besides, I really dislike OtHofP - a lot (So sorry about that @catrox14 : ( ) - so it was an easy choice for me.

 

Although it does seem as if we do have an agreement on the top ep for the last few seasons.

 

Actually not necessarily ; ) * . I may have to dodge rotten tomatoes for this, but "Lazurus Rising" isn't my favorite - It's not even in my top 4 for this season (If you look back at my early votes, you'll see me voting against it consistently), but I saw the writing on the wall there, so I chose my battles.

 

* (I agreed with season 3. My third favorite won season 2, My favorite for season 2 came in second. I wasn't here at the site yet for the season 1 competition, but it looks like my #3 won that as well. My favorite came in second, and the rest of the line up looked really different than what my choices would have been. One I really liked went out 3rd for example, while an episode I thought was just meh was in the top 5 with another at 6. And a lot of others were mixed up similarly. (I'm wondering if my taste really doesn't mesh with the popular opinion on that season.)

Yup, I completely understand. We just happen to be of opposite tastes on that one. I kinda feel bad for being one of the proponents of your OtHoaP's demise. I just dislike that episode so much - and wanted IaTL to live - that's the way it went. And I also love "Monster Movie." (I didn't vote against it even once ; ) ) The way the voting is going, by the time we get to the top 5, only one of my choices for top 5 will be left, so I won't feel bad for being ruthless after that - heh heh heh.

Oh, I've been heartless with On The Head Of A Pin and I don't think we need to revisit my reasons for disliking that one. Actually, I have no clear "favorite" for S4. There's a few I really like fairly evenly; and then there's a whole pile of stink that follows. Overall, this is the season they started to lose me. Too much grim and far too much wishy-washy plotting. In the event of taking yourself far too seriously, one should really take it seriously and stick the landing, IMO.

 

AwesomO4000, I don't vote till the morning now, so if It's A Terrible Life is still around I'll join forces with you and try to save it. It's one of those few I really like that I spoke of earlier. At the very least maybe we can get rid of On The Head Of A Pin first. ;)

Nah, I'll fight to the bitter end, I gave up on Yellow Fever, couldn't save Pin and tried attacking one that I knew others would have to vote on.

 

Go ahead Awesome000  do your worst...will enjoy the duel and may the best cowgirl win. :)  I did love Frontierville but then again I've always have always had a soft spot for cowboy shows. 

 

To be honest most shows have only a couple of strong sections and I didn't take out your favorite for season 1, and several of my favs from season 1 bit the dust because I didn't understand the game.  I think if I had to sit down and fill out my top 5 for each season, it wouldn't match the way we voted...Although Scarecrow was a good ep, I'm just not sure it would be my # 2.
