Deanna: I'm in Charge Here

With the introduction of Deanna, TPTB have provided the show with something new: a true enigma.  Three episodes into CDB's entry into the Alexandria Safe Zone, they - and we - still have little or no clue as to her true designs and motivations.  She makes suggestions of envisioning the ASZ as a model for rebuilt society in the post-ZA world, but she also readily admits she has little or no perception of the state of the world outside the walls of the ASZ.  She brags of a master poker player's ability to read people; the histories of the members of CDB, however, are written in a language unknown to her, and she has yet to acknowledge the limits of her comprehension.

We see almost nothing outside of her "public face", projecting an appearance of intelligence, wit, and the ability to handle virtually any crisis.  Thus far, she has let this mask slip only once, and then only to the audience.  At the end of "Forget", when Deanna lets Sasha out to assume a watch shift in the church tower, Sasha tells Deanna that "none of this [the security offered by the ASZ] is real".  Deanna's response to Sasha's face is a matter-of-fact "that's bullshit" - the perfect image of a politician trying to emphasize the truthfulness of a statement by expressing it in earthier-than-usual language.  As soon as Sasha has walked away and the gate has closed behind her, however, the politiico's mask slips and we see her true face - one of rage at having her vision challenged.

So - is Deanna a small-time bureaucratic politician with big dreams, or is she a megalomaniac in the making?

I think she means well and she knows the town is vulnerable but she's in the dark about how badly.  She can more or less handle things when things are quiet and going well, but as soon as the guts hit the grill I don't think she's going to be able to handle it.

Who's Deanna?

In "Spend," she was anxious about Abraham assuming authority in Alexandria, and I expect all hell to break lose when she learns of Aiden's death.

Deanna kept her poker face during Fr. Gabriel's tirade, and "you've given me a lot to think about," was the perfect response from a politician. I assume she'll talk to her personal assistant, Maggie, about it, but I don't know what Maggie will say. She & Glenn were Team Gabriel when CDB fought the Termites, and they're both heavily invested in finding a safe haven to start a family.

It's entirely possible Maggie might chose Team Deanna. And where Maggie goes, Glenn will follow. Maybe Tara, too?

I haven't read the comics, but I do know the character was male. I was wondering how the next Big Bad could be different, and making Deanna a woman was a brilliant idea.

Well, I guess the next time someone is beating his wife, you won't turn a blind eye just because he happens to be a surgeon, won't you, Deanna?

RIP to poor Reg though.

Shows what happens when you ignore the most basic rules of a zombie apocalypse:

  • RICK GRIMES IS ALWAYS RIGHT - EVEN WHEN HE'S WRONG.
  • ANY OF YOU BITCHES WHO ARGUES WITH RICK GRIMES IS JUST PLAIN WRONG.
  • ARGUE WITH RICK GRIMES, AND YOU WILL PAY - AND RICK DOUBT IS A BLOOD DEBT.

Do you think Glenn was interviewed and they just didn't show it?  I mean seriously, she had to have been twice as pissed to know that not only did her oldest son get people killed because he was a coward, her youngest son let Walkers in because he couldn't close a fucking gate.

Yeah, I was not getting how Deanna said she was all about transparency, but she only tapes Nicholas' version of the supply run fiasco, and she only has her second-hand account of what Father PP said. He wasn't there at the meeting, and she didn't ask him to tell it while being taped.

Very good points.

I was thinking... wtf didn't Deanna ask Spencer "just who is on guard/gate duty, if you're here?" right from the beginning?

Also, you want to exile Rick because he said some things, but mostly because he was fighting and waving a gun around.  But you don't find it slightly odd that he isn't there, and you don't know where he is?!  Even if he doesn't feel the need to be there, shouldn't you have him where you can see him, just 'cause??  For all you (Denna) know, he could be out killing Pete or anyone else.   Or raiding the armory ('again'!), to go on a killing/crime spree.

Some stuff can kinda take one "out of the moment" when one forgets to check logic and realism at the door.
