Like Sand Through an Hourglass: Behind the Scenes of DOOL

The Behind The Scenes thread is not a spoiler thread.  So spoilers, including casting information, do not belong in here.  The "behind the scenes" information specifically related to casting should go in either the spoiler thread or the Salem International thread which discusses. departures and arrivals thread.

Interesting and not surprising tbh

What does that mean? That more actors might end up leaving in the next several months? Also it sounds like there's going to be more budget cuts, which I don't even know how it's possible since this show barely has any money to begin with. At this point I won't be surprised if this show gets cancelled in a year or two. Might be for the best.

That's what it sounds like and I agree I can see it being cancelled in the next couple of years. Granted I've been saying this for years and they keep proving me wrong but with the OGs of the show slowly leaving us I don't know where this show is going creatively. This is even more bleak after the passing of DH/John who was still leading stories.

Having a strong creative direction would be helpful, but the newer actors don't see the point in staying indefinitely (Hi Sophia! Bye Sophia!) since a soap career just isn't what it used to be and the writers keep circling the same formulas even though they're tired, ie: The DiMeras VS The Kiriakises, someone raped, someone preggers, a doppelganger, a back from the dead person, and some thwarted weddings. Rinse, repeat.

In a lot of ways, we've seen these ideas several times before and with better budgets, scripts and performances.

IF they'd built up a New Generation and kept them around and given them new stories to tell, then I'd say the show could go on.

Right now, the vets are keeping it going and everyone younger is filtering in and out. There's no sense of building towards something.

I mean even if they recasted legacy characters this show's future is on a year by year basis at best(hence no point in building something).

The show isn't with the times which doesn't help either.

Beyond the Gates has its flaws and is less than a month old but it despite using the same tropes they managed to seem current with the times and offer something fresh. When was the last time we could say this about Days?

In the past they were able to mix the vets with the newer characters but somewhere along the way they just stopped doing that. Not making the Last Blast crew the show's future years ago did long term damage that I'm not sure the show can recover from now. Then they could've added Chad/Abby, Eli/Lani to the mix also.  The future might not look as bleak as it does now.

Also, the weird obsessing over characters who do not work or are pets. If Ron had been half as passionate about a new generation to lead the show as he was about forcing Paulina, Leo, Gwen, NotKristen, Abifail and RWS down our throats, imagine where we'd be...

At least Johnny and Chanel are okay.

There are so few vets left at this point that the idea of them freeing up the budget even more just seems like, "What?" If it's that bad you gotta wonder how they even got renewed in the first place.

I'm kind of wondering if Deirdre Hall will take this all as an opportunity to retire. The only time she even seems to like being in front of the camera is when she's playing Hattie, and that's over at this point.

I think Deidre will be there till the end of Days or when she passes.  I don't think Drake's passing bothers her from a professional standpoint because her character was established on this show long before he was on the show.

True. With her romantic storyline over (unless they give Gregory Harrison a call like I think they should) she does have a purpose on the show for being the resident character shrink.

I don't think the show would survive her departure, honestly. That would be too much a sign that it's a sinking ship. Remember all the press when Jarlena were fired last time?

Corday will likely do all he can to appease her until the very end. Plus, I think she's already said she's so much a part of the place they'll only be taking her out when they tear the building down, or something LOL.

I don't think she ever needed a love interest to be relevant for this reason and while I wouldn't be opposed to her having one at this point in her life it's also not necessary. I'm fine with Marlena/Julie/Maggie living in their Golden Girls era at this stage in their lives.

Maggie was fortunate to find love late in life but I feel like she's the rare character to do that. Julie and Marlena were inextricably tied to their love interests in a way Maggie wasn't. I mean Mickey/Maggie were also a supercouple, but they waited years before they moved her onto Victor.

Actually Maggie was put with Victor pretty quickly after Mickey died. It was more that Mickey was off screen for a couple of years so we didn't see him before he was killed off.

Yeah that's true I think that helped a bit. Plus the OG Mickey John Clarke retired in 2003/2004 so even though they had that brief recast with John Ingle most fans were far removed from Mickey at that point. I don't see Days having that type of time left with Marlena for that to happen again.

This gal just made an entire video about her theory that the silver haired guy from Monday was a recast John.

Which of course was proven false on Tuesday 😅

The one interesting thing she said though is that the actor posted on his socials that the one day gig became a three month gig.

So....?
