Special:

Glimpse the epic scale of 'Game of Thrones' in this featurette that spends one day touring various Season 5 sets in Croatia, Spain & Ireland. See cast members preparing to shoot scenes while prominent members of the show's massive crew talk about the many jobs they must oversee - sets and costumes, hair and make-up and much more - to keep the production operating smoothly.

OK HBO, you got me. I'll never complain about only 10 episodes a season again.

I mean, you probably already knew this, but the fact a production this large is on TV is a minor miracle. The fact that it's a huge success and is now self-sustaining is a major miracle.

ETA: The spoilers are very minor. Jonathan Pryce is playing a character called "The High Sparrow". They're shooting in Spain to represent Dorne, etc. Anybody looking for blockbusters is going to be disappointed.

I am a total spoilerphobe and I agree that the spoilers are very minimal.

I already knew the locations were beautiful but seeing how difficult it was to carry everything up the narrow streets made me really appreciate how much effort goes into making this show.

The new palace location in Spain is gorgeous. I am not surprised that they were able to get permission to film there now that the show is such a success. It might have been a lot harder back in S1 but I'm sure it's a lot easier now.

To put it mildly.

Travel porn at its best.

I don't know if they feel the need to draw more tourists, but I imagine they will after this season airs.

I'm totally up for a Spain/Croatia GoT vacation.

My heart sang when they said they would use Sevilla for Dorne and I am BEYOND excited at this point. Sevilla is definitely in my top 5 places that I have been and seeing it, seeing that they chose El Alcazar was so perfect because that was exactly where I wanted them to shoot. Super excited!

I love BTS stuff. :D

ETA: Random question- I might not have been paying attention but are they keeping the Water Gardens

and Sunspear

as two separate locations or are they having the WG be a part of

Sunspear

?

Upon reflection, D&D were barely in the special

Charitable thought:  They wanted to take this opportunity to highlight work done by other crew members.

Uncharitable thought: WTF do they do aside from write (most of the) episodes and "delegate"?  One of the line producers said he works primarily with one of the other executive producers.

Sorry, that's the old TWOP, as in "without pity", in me.

That's not an atypical role for showrunners during the actual production of a series, is it? If I'm not mistaken, showrunners generally run the writers room and preside over casting sessions, tone meetings, and other elements of preproduction, but during production their role tends to be more hands-off. The fact that they're actually flying around Europe to make appearances on location marks them as fairly involved as showrunners go; I know, for instance, that when a show shoots in Canada, it's not uncommon for the showrunners to be based in L.A. and rarely visit the set at all.

Like I said, "delegate".

The fact that they're actually flying around Europe

Jetting around Europe from one breathtaking location to another?

Nightmare.

Canada, Croatia, Ireland, Spain.

One of these things is not like the other.

To put it another way, the primary reason for visiting Vancouver is if you're 19 or 20.

But in that case, why is it "uncharitable" to suggest that D&D are behaving in a way that is totally normal for showrunners?

Oh, or are you saying that it was weird for them to be on set if they didn't really have anything to do there? If that's the case, I would argue that although it's not standard procedure for the writer/producers to make set appearances, writers have long argued that they should be on set, not to run any of the day-to-day operations but to be on hand in case someone has a question about the script. Particularly when we're talking about a series as elaborate as Game of Thrones, I don't think it's inappropriate for the head writers to make consulting appearances when they can.

I have always liked the fact that D&D are fans of the books and have a hands on approach. They have been the public 'face' of the production team from Day 1 and it's nice to see they are passionate enough to want to spend time on set, whether or not they need to be there, I think they're doing an admirable job.

The only thing they're running is from one party to the next. Vince Gilligan is a showrunner. After spending hours out in the hot New Mexico sun he never looked so wasted, and he had to create new material.

But it does shed light on D&D softening the edges of Robert "Party Hardy" Baratheon and totally whitewashing Tyrion "Take a donkey and a beehive into a whorehouse" Lannister. Especially when listening to Amanda Peet explain how her husband broke his hands after drinking at a GoT wrap party and then playing a game of mercy with Khal Drogo of all people

(at the 5:55 minute mark)

I feel like every fan site I've visited for this show people are whining about D&D and making various ridiculous accusations about them.

It's getting really tiresome. Not that I care who likes D&D and not but I just don't understand why people seem to feel the need to shit so much on the people that created this show that they have so much interest for.

I for one has a lot of respect for them and everyone involved in making this show. I think they've overall done a fantastic job.

Back on TWoP I saw some idiot fearing for the safety of Beniof's wife and children after one of the "Theon gets tortured" episodes aired.

Despite any negativity that exists, take heart, I fully believe the phenomenal success of the show says it all and is no doubt reward in itself for D&D.

I apologize for upsetting people.

Obviously, I need to work on my delivery.

On a serious note, I think D&D were barely in A Day in the Life because they wanted to focus on what other crew members did.  We already get to see D&D a lot in behind the scenes stuff and other programs (I'm thinking of that program on Sundance Channel where each episode they interview a different team of writers from a popular show).

I honestly don't know what the difference is between an executive producer and a line producer, but it seems as if the line producers are the regional executive in charge of making sure everything gets done.

That being said, it's still a bad idea to challenge Khal Drogo.
