S05.E06: The Dark Side of Love

Recommended Posts

Oh Brontë/Louise. I had such high hopes for you.

Loved seeing Beck in the flashbacks. And how great was it that someone finally knew/cared enough about her to realize that there was something off about her death-book. Teaming up with Dr. Nicky’s son and his friends to catfish Joe was kind of silly, but I support it…

And then we find out that she actually fell for Joe’s bullshit?

Poor Candice is spinning in her grave: “What is the big deal about Joe Fucking Goldberg?!” Really, all it took to ignore all the circumstantial evidence was his soft boy lies and charm?! Ugh.

Alas poor Clayton. I cant really hold putting Brontë in danger when cat fishing Joe was HER IDEA to begin with. And he was right to call her out on being so stupid. Now Joe has damaged Dr. Nicky’s family even more.

At least Kate throwing out Joe was awesome, even if she’s still complicit in everything.

I love that the show has never forgotten Beck as a character.   Brontë being someone with a connection to Beck was a fun reveal.  No matter how good you are at scrubbing your past it will come back to haunt you.  JUSTICE FOR BECK!!!!!

Gotta love online sleuths.    They will dig and dig and dig.    Plus the whole campaign against Joe was kinda clever in a dark and twisted way.

One of the big truths about Joe is that he is a charming guy all the way until you wake up in a glass cage.  I can understand that even knowing what Joe is capable of that Brontë still fell in love with him.   If Joe wasn’t so gosh darn charming and pretty there would be no show.

I thought she looked conflicted, but I hate that she fell in love with him. When it comes to looks, and the bookishness, he’s my type (or he used to be - Penn Badgley has successfully put me off). Even without the killing, his personality and monologues in the book, had me hating him. I don’t think I read the rest of the books.

It’s nice that she was connected to Beck.  I thought she might have been related to the girl he buried, who tracked him down. I can’t remember much about the therapist, and I’d totally forgotten that they set up his student. Also, Marianne’s death.  I’m glad that Kate was really prepared, even before he got home.  Protection for his son, and herself.

Charlotte Ritchie was really good in this episode. Glad Kate loves Henry and regrets taking him from his adoptive dads and is doing what she can to protect him now, thought now I'm sort of worried he's gonna be mad at her taking him from Joe and kill her. Loved her shoving/hitting Joe in the throat.

It was nice to see Beck being likeable, kind and good at her TA job. I remember when I watched season 1 , she seemed so annoying, though her death was sad especially because she seemed so close actually escaping.

Finally, an episode that was mostly believable, at least within the context of the overall crazy You story. It was interesting to see how the plot to expose Joe started and developed, and I also got the answer to the question I posted on the last episode, asking why Bronte/Louise had consensual sex with Joe at the beach house (allowing him to be in control with her tied up) if she was ready to expose him--apparently she was not ready to expose him because she fell for his charms and savior image.

I think it was Bronte/Louise who mentioned in this episode (when she was talking to the police? or maybe when talking to her co-conspirators) that someone with the user name Minty Fresh said she (or he?) had seen the cage in the basement of Joe's bookstore. Does anyone remember who saw the cage and lived to tell the story (aside from Maddie)? And why would that person not have told the police?

I don't know how Kate can protect him unless Joe is put in prison. She can't return him to his adoptive dads because that would be the first place Joe would look. Henry also wouldn't be safe with Kate's family. So where is Henry being kept, and how is he coping with being away from both of his parents?

Marienne, Nadia, Sherry, and Gary have all seen it. I was kind of assuming it was Marienne that posted it.

But I thought Minty Fresh said she had seen it in the basement of Joe's bookstore. Didn't all of the people you listed see it in other locations--Marienne in the subway system (I forget which city), Nadia in London, and Sherry and Gary in Madre Linda, CA? Of course, my memory may be wrong.

[I saw in a recap that in Season 1 Joe had a girlfriend named Karen Minty for a while after Beck (but before he killed Beck). So she could be the person with the user name Minty Fresh, but I don't recall--and the recap didn't mention--that Karen ever saw the cage in the basement. However, if she did, it was the one in the basement of the bookstore in NYC.]

I have a vague memory that there was a guy in the NYC bookstore cage who gave Joe a new identity and then was released, though it seems unlikely that Joe would release someone who knew his new identity. Except that I also have a vague memory that this guy went to the Philippines, and when Joe was telling Maddie his plan for making Reagan disappear he said he had someone in Manila who would help. So if he really did have someone in Manila to help him, it could be the guy who was in the cage and gave Joe a new identity before going to the Philippines.

Then that's almost certainly who it is but yea I don't remember her seeing the cage. Although, I don't remember her at all so.

Oh yea, that makes a lot of sense. That's the guy Joe in Manila Joe was talking about. You might just be misremembering the country he went to or maybe the show is.

When it is apparent that Claudia has relapsed and is very sick, Karen refuses to take her to a hospital as she will lose her job and possibly lose her son Paco. Instead, she and Joe take her to his glass cage in the basement of the book store to detox and Karen stays with her to take care of her.

When Joe suddenly ends things, Karen is very calm and collected, to Joe's surprise. Although she was clearly hurt, she reasonably gathers her things and accepts the situation and leaves.

Later, she confronts Beck and thanks her for being her "get out of Joe free card". She says that she was aware of their lying and cheating while she and Joe had been together, and that Beck had shown her who he really was. She adds that she bets Beck is "no Candace", that he was still hung up on her in some way, and that he would one day do to Beck what he had done to her, or worse, "maybe he'll do whatever the hell he did to Candace". We do not see Karen again, however Paco angrily tells Joe that Karen was gone and not there for him or his mother anymore because of him.

She did see the book cage.

She did see the book cage.

Thanks for sharing this useful summary! I had forgotten pretty much everything about Karen except for being a short-term girlfriend who did not get killed.

It was a reminder that Beck was many things to many different people. I’ve been rewatching some of season 1 and I really think we were too hard on her. Yes, she was flawed, but nobody has to like everybody, and she was capable of growing into a better person. Joe stole that from her.

She was in danger of being murdered the whole time.  It wasn't just because of a post.  And, plus, wasn't that the plan, to lure him to the beach house?  Isn't that why they had cameras set up?  Is it just because she decided she was in love and didn't want to go through it.  Then, why call Dom and tell her he was there.
