S03.E12: 'Semifinal #3: David Friedberg, Sean Gunn and Mina Kimes

Recommended Posts

I didn't see Sean's first game (and, in fact, have never seen him in anything), and I still don't know how the hell David qualifies as a celebrity (his podcast, I suppose, but there was recently a comedian who's actually been on TV competing in the regular show, when I'd accept him as a D-list celebrity here easier than I would this David guy), while Mina played a great first game, so I was rooting for her.

It seemed like she was running away with it, but then the third round shook things up and it was down to FJ.  Okay, fine, she didn't get it, but, goddamn, she thought it was her math she got wrong?  Not that France is not a Balkan country?

The fire TS surprised me, even in a celebrity game -- hello, pyromaniac, pyrotechnics, nothing to get one of them from pyro to fire?  I was also a bit surprised no one came up with baboon balloon, especially with extra time after the incorrect response.

Okay, I've seen all the games up to now (haven't watched this one yet) and I still don't know who he is. Like, obviously I've seen him here before, but the name in the thread title totally did not ring any bells.

Some podcasts have more viewers than tv shows get, so I think it might be the case that more and more, podcasters would qualify for "famous" as much as people who appear on TV or in movies.

I suspect that with more and more niche media, which appeals to particular demographics rather than a broad swath of the general population, the Celebrity Jeopardy woprld will be actively trying to recruit those people, in hopes of also broadening viewership for the Jeopardy franchise. I'm okay with it.

That said, it seems that David has a lot else on his resume besides his podcast, none of which I think would make him recognizable to most people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Friedberg

I liked Sean's charity and his sweater.

Even though I didn't "know" two of the three competitors, so "celebrity"? meh, I loved that they played seriously and played to win. Calmly and without the annoying antics of another finalist (**cough Robin cough**). I want to see the celebrities want to win lots of money for their charities. This panel did and that's worth any amount of eyerolling over the caliber of their actual celebrity.

True that.

I was a little shocked that Dave missed cupholder on his DD.

Finally got around to watching this tonight.  I was rooting for Sean, as he's the only one I've heard of, although I would have been happy with a Mina win as well.

Sadly, I didn't do much better in this game than I did in regular Jeopardy all week.  I was really hoping I'd at least be able to get FJ here, but nope.  Boo, hiss.

I finally watched this episode tonight, but I already knew that David had won this semi-final because his name appeared in the episode thread title for the final that was posted a few days ago. Big spoiler. 😒

I had really wanted Sean Gunn to win, but would have had a tough time choosing between Sean and Kamau to win it all. I'm Team Kamau all the way now.

Of the three semi-finalists, the FJ category of "Film Festivals" would seem to have been more in Sean's wheelhouse, which is likely why he felt comfortable making that big bet. The clue really was based on knowledge of geography or recent history, though. It was an instaget for me.

Even though in an earlier CJ episode, Ken tried very hard to reassure one of the contestants that the clues are not made easy for them, this episode absolutely disproved that for me. When I go 5/5 in a Shakespeare category, it's definitely Shakespeare For Dummies and, I also stink at anagrams! 😄

It was a good episode though. No fooling around. They all came to play.
