Paradise review: Sterling K. Brown powers through Hulu's wobbly political thriller

Spoiler

Viewers who hold out until episode 7 (dropping February 25) will be rewarded with an excellent hour of television — propulsive, suspenseful, moving, and terrifying. It’s one of those How We Got Here™ flashbacks, and it’s immensely satisfying.

WE'VE GOT LOTSA QUESTIONS!

Quote

On Paradise, we understand the concept of hiding in plain sight, but couldn’t Billy, Robinson and Sinatra have had their highly sensitive conversation in a slightly less public place than the middle of the annual carnival? Are we to believe that when the architects of Paradise hand-picked the last 25,000 Americans to survive… whatever… someone was like, “Better make sure we have a dozen or so carnies to operate rides”? And did this week’s closing twist shock you, or was that killer reveal the only possible “shocking” option?

WE'VE GOT LOTSA QUESTIONS!

Do Paradise Numbers Add Up?

Based on episode S01•E05 — In The Palaces Of Crowned Kings:

Quote

On Paradise, we get that Carl owed Xavier a favor for keeping the secret about his dog. But doesn’t what Carl did at the end — risking his job by putting the “They’re lying to you” message on the dome — seem like a far bigger matter than just keeping mum about a contraband pooch?

Quote

Speaking of Carl, if the population of Paradise is 25,000, in what scenario is his house number 27037? Like, even if each person had their own house and they were all on a singular winding street….

Washington Post has run 2 Paradise related articles this week.

1.  Great interview with SKB.  Spoilers through Episode 7, and one semi-spoiler in the last paragraph about something that will happen in Episode 8.

2.  Article on the science of tsunamis and volcanoes, based on real world examples.  Again, spoilers up through Episode 7.

I'd love it if someone did a Paradise podcast, talking about the science/politics /world building behind all this.

Good article, but it does contain spoilers for the first 3 episodes.  If you're past that, it's a good read.

I agree that it's a good read, but one thing left me confused (putting the key part in spoiler tags just in case): the author of the article (not Dan Fogelman) describes the premise by saying that

Spoiler

"Paradise‘s idyllic community is a man-made underground city tucked away in the Colorado mountains, deep enough to protect the residents from the extinction-level event that ended the world above months earlier."

But all this time (and I'm up to episode 7) I've thought that it's been 3 years since the event. Did I mishear or misunderstand what was said in the show? Or did the author of the article get it wrong?

Over on Hulu, Antoni from Queer Eyes has a series called  No Taste Like Home, rather like Finding Our Roots, but through recipes, food and travel to the home country. Anyway, there’s a James Marsden episode. Yeah, if you weren’t crushing before … LOL!

ETA: Nat Geo channel running this ep on cable tonight at midnight, Central time.
