S01.E07: Convention

I was very glad to see Evan stand up for the guidance counselor at the end, because they really needed to show us that he can be unselfish sometimes. (If I were Malcolm, I would have responded to the "we are just friends!" declaration with, "Being friends with you doesn't sound so great either.")

The "energy arbitrage" thing was a reference to Enron's "energy trading," right? This is set in Texas, after all.

I thought it was pretty predictable that the audience liked the principal's jokes. It was very reminiscent of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where audiences thought Captain Holt's brand of "humor" was hilarious, even though none of the other characters did.

I'd like to see more of the students again. Especially the one who was so concerned with Gwen's wardrobe. And maybe Sharon's bursting-with-testosterone son, if it means we can see Sharon again.

Yeah I don't get why Malcolm keeps showing up every time Evan calls. It's the one thing I really don't like about Evan, how he's so wishy-washy about what their relationship is.

II also don't get the point of Markie's little game, pretending to quit every year, much less principal Moretti pretending to interview replacements. What does it get Markie? I didn't hear mention of a raise.

The energy arbitrage thing was just weird. I couldn't make heads nor tails of it. Granted, I get that was the point, but still. Do they do anything? How do they make any money for salaries, let alone a convention with swag and upscale food?

The best I can tell is Markie gets an ego boost, in that he thinks a fuss is being made over his potentially leaving.  None of it makes much sense.

I'd just like to see the main characters get more development.  It's seven episodes in and I feel like I couldn't tell you much about any of them.

I love Malcolm. He was the highlight of the episode for me, he is so cute and the actor is captivating. But yes, when Evan is at a conference he simply can't spend the entire day with him, it is a work event. So it was a bit of an impossible situation although he could have been nicer about it.

When he asked him "why are you here" after inviting him that was a bit mean.

Isn't that weird? I wonder if something changed early on in the filming process, like the writers suddenly decided to go in a different direction or something.

I don't know what it's like for this kind of series, but I know in more traditional network series, writers might create a guest character and have a season long arc planned for the new character. After filming the first episode with the character, the creative might realize the actor/character does not work well with the rest of the cast/characters and then rethink/rework the following scripts accordingly.

This physics teacher has totally been forgotten! Poor Harry...

I’m actually quite satisfied with Harry’s story arc. Once he had that 💡moment of “Ahhhh. OK, you’re full-on crazy!”, and walked away, I can see him steering clear of the hot mess that is Evan. School communities may be small, but there are ways to actively avoid people you don’t want to encounter.

Especially since if all he was interested in was sex, he could go on Grinder and find someone closer than a 3 hour drive. Expecting someone to come that far because only his D will do is boyfriend behavior.

I think it was a complete arc.  He was only a guest star and he was even just a sub so I don't think it was that weird.

In brief, arbitrage is buying and selling something, usually almost instantly, and making money on the difference. In energy arbitrage, maybe you see some producer with too much electricity selling it cheap for $100/MWh, and at the same time you see some distributor that needs it willing to pay $105/MWh. So you buy a bunch cheap, and sell it instantly for $5 profit (times however many MWh were involved).

Do that often enough, with enough volume, and it can be very profitable. Arbitrage exists with almost every commodity, even stocks.

Sorry you asked? 😁
