I liked last night's show. And I thought Taylor's opening commentary was more lucid than a lot of what else is out there. I don't usually go to her for current events insight, but she's not as conditioned by fear of offending people as some of the usual suspects, so I think that helped her just tell it like she sees it without worrying about who was going to approve it? In any case, good for her.

I thought the panelists were fun together, it was more high energy than suual and less wasting time.

Ron Funches was a regular on the original version of this show. I notice they are developing their own rotation of regulars. I wonder what RF is doing these days, and whether they haven't asked him, or if he's refused them. It really isn't nearly as clever or funny as the original, so I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to do it.

Ron Funches has been on After Midnight just once -- on March 6, 2024.

Glad to see Andy Richter is going to be back again.

Yeah and a lot of them just aren't very good, frankly. The panelists basically make or break the episode. I still weigh the show by the first segment. If I haven't laughed once before the first commercial break I turn it off and delete the recording. You can tell very quickly whether the guests are any good at this.

The show is hit or miss for me.  Some of the guests are really funny.   I do notice some of the guests, who aren't comics, look down to look at their screen to come up with a funny line to answer a question.

The point scoring is not always consistent.  Sometimes a person gives a lame answer and somehow they received a higher point score than someone who gave a funnier answer (that's my opinion, of course).

Another thing that happens is the show cuts a segment out and it's really obvious when all of sudden, the guests' scores almost double before the 1st commercial break.  I'm guessing that specific show went passed the allotted time, so a segment was cut to fit the 60 time slot.

I think the 60 minute run time was the death knell from the beginning.

Having re-watched some @Midnight episodes recently, the 30 minute run time forced them to keep the episodes tight with very little filler.  There is so much padding in After Midnight.  Taylor's stand up to start the show was ok, but in the original show everything Taylor mentions in her standup was normally written into the show.

Add in the FTW challenge changes to some of the stupidest and/or laziest ideas -- who is taller, where in the world was this random guy's picture taken, games that were basically 50/50 guesses, etc. -- compared to the original show where the contestants in FTW actually had to come up with something creative on their own and the audience picked which was the best answer not knowing who wrote which answer.

Hashtag wars was one of the best parts of the original series and they marginalized it in After Midnight.

They could have found a new host if they really wanted to, couldn't they? I wonder if they renewed it but cut the budget even more and she decided not to take the deal they offered, knowing it was an insultingly low bid that nobody else would agree to either?

It might also be the increased scrutiny as the Presidential administration is cracking down/retaliating against TV shows and Networks they don't approve of.

I can't imagine she'd make as much doing stand-up. It seems more likely she's just trying to save face.

My DVR doesn't appear to be recording these, for some reason they don't see them as new. And apparently they aren't very new because they seem to have dropped the opening monologue. I think these were taped more than a month ago because Thursday's episode referenced the SuperBowl.

I definitely got the one with the Ghosts cast last night. And there was an opening monologue with current references (KY Derby and film tariffs).  Maybe your local station messed up?

I did go back and check last week’s. Thursday didn’t have an opening monologue, but Wednesday’s was current.

Last night was another Thursday show with no opening monologue. There was a passing reference to the Real ID deadline (timely) and I think something about the conclave, but no mention of the new pope. So now I’m thinking they record the Thursday show on Wednesday and have a a 4-day weekend.

I’m going to miss this when it’s gone. Where else will I learn about things like gorilla vs 100 men, and that guy who rubs banana peel on his face?  I don’t know how many times I’ve known an answer on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me because I learned it here!

(Series Finale)
The Final Tournament of Champions winners from this week.
Premiere Date: June 13, 2025   CBS  12:37am

And that's it for the 2nd and last season of After Midnight.

The championship finale was down to Marcella Arguello, Gillian Jacobs, and Paul F. Tompkins.

And it's Marcella Arguello as the Champion of After Midnight.

This entire week was really great -- all the top comedians from past 2 years, and it was really funny.

It's been a good run.

To Taylor and the staff -- to quote Pete Holmes: "Thank you. I'm going to miss this show."

I feel like the show went out with more of a whimper than a bang. Not exactly what I would call an all-star panel for the finale, except for maybe Tompkins. Monday's show was the strongest. The rest of the week was sort of typical hit-or-miss stuff, with mostly misses.

I think we mostly agree the concept didn't work as an hour-long show. When I bothered to watch at all, I only watched the first two games then skipped to the hashtag wars at the end. The couch stuff and the stuff in front of the podiums never really worked.

As for Taylor, I never really cared for her monologues. I've seen her stand-up special and while I think she's a lovely person her material is just so-so.

At the end of the day this will go down as something of a failed experiment. And that's too bad, because the original version on Comedy Central was usually quite good, and I will miss seeing the comics. The good ones, anyway.

I've just watched the finale week. I thought the "tournament" was a great way to end the show. The last episode was very good. The surprise return of the haunted doll really made me laugh. And Taylor's tribute to everyone who made the show was very kind. She seemed to be saying without saying that the show could've gone on without her. I tend to agree.
