If the audience is skipping entries at this point, then that's on them, not the movies.

Hopefully the film will be strong enough to stand on its own as well.

I didn't watch Black Widow, but Hawkeye did a good job introducing Yelena so I know who she is and why she was after Clint.

I would assume Thunderbolts* would give a hint to each of the characters except Bucky, since you'd have to miss 4 movies and 1 TV Show to have no clue about him.

Of the people on the poster I know Bucky, Yelena and US Agent from movies/shows. I know Ghost from Ant-Man and the trailer made it clear that David Harbour's character is Russian, connected to Yelena (and Natasha) so Russian Spy/Soldier.

The only 2 I have no clue about (just yet) are the one with the mask (that kind of looks like Ghost) and Bob...which would be cool if he was Hydra Bob from Deadpool 😃

The mask wearer in the poster is Taskmaster from Black Widow.  In the teaser  trailer It looks like Ghost had an equipment and mask upgrade since the Blip which ended Ant-Man and The Wasp

I feel the same about Bob, although I have never seen him before just heard about him.

"With your feet on the air and your head on the ground..."

I thought that was Where Is My Mind?, and it's a good fit for the sense of displacement that's in play here, that none of the characters seem to know where they belong now. Even if Val's behind some of it, and she must be, they don't seem aware that they're working for the same person. Why else would John be firing on Yelena? I like the more serious feel of the trailer, that even the lighting adds to the kind of gloomy mood. I am at least intrigued enough to want to learn more.

Sounds like a deal from the Black Widow lawsuit. With at least three characters from there making the jump

The very first Marvel movie I ever saw was Avengers Infinity War. My friend didn't want to see it alone. I followed it just fine, and even most of the jokes and references that were supposedly reliant on having seen previous projects were pretty easy to get. So I just don't think people wanting to skip one movie or series, or even more, should be a barrier to entry.

1 | Are you pleased to see The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Isaiah Bradley (played by Carl Lumbly) featured so prominently in the new Captain America: Brave New World trailer? Or does that actually have you worrying that the character shouldn’t buy any green bananas? And did the Thunderbolts* trailer make you guffaw when Ghost referred to Falcon and Winter Soldier’s John Walker as “dime store Captain America”? (Because he 100% was.)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus says Marvel's Thunderbolts* will finally reveal Val's 'entire plan' (exclusive)
"Some of her earlier schemes are going to be revealed, and you're going to get a better understanding of why she behaves the way she does," Louis-Dreyfus says.

And while Val sees herself as the Nick Fury-type leader, she may not be as in control of the Thunderbolts as she thinks. "She is about four steps ahead all the time, or at least she thinks she is until she's not," Louis-Dreyfus teases. "All of these characters have worked for her under certain circumstances, so she would fancy herself as a bit of a puppet master, and she's very power-hungry. She's a user of anti-heroes. She definitely sees herself as the leader, the organizer of this group, but I'm not sure they see her as such."

As for the rest of the action, Louis-Dreyfus loves how there are more grounded fight scenes and stunts than what fans may be expecting from a big MCU movie. "What's great about this film is it's got sort of a grittiness that matches up well with the comedy, and there's not a lot of green screen," she says. "There's not these special effects that go on for hours. It's people doing their own stunts. It's got a rawness that I think the audience is going to very much enjoy, sort of going back to roots in that sense."

THUNDERBOLTS*: Geraldine Viswanathan On Her Mysterious Character And "Terrifying" MCU Debut
By Mark Cassidy   Jan 24, 2025

Around this time last year, we got word that Emmy award-winning The Bear star Ayo Edebiri had been forced to part ways with Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* movie, with Blockers breakout Geraldine Viswanathan brought in to replace her.

Edebiri's character wasn't officially named at the time, but we'd later learn that she was set to be introduced as Allegra de Fontaine's assistant, who is said to be "exceptional at her job, even surprising Val with how good she is at getting things done."

Later in the year, shortly after SDCC, it was revealed that Viswanathan's character was named "Mel," leading to speculation that she might turn out to be Melissa Gold, a.k.a. Songbird.

While this might be the case, all the actress was willing to confirm during an interview with Empire is that she's playing "the assistant of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ power-hungry CIA director."
*  *  *
“The scale of that was ridiculous and terrifying in a new way. It was like, ‘Oh, there are 500 extras and a helicopter in this scene, so I’d better not [frick] up my line.’”

“She is the actual queen," she added when asked about working with the Seinfeld alum. "I call her the most perfect person in America. It was insane to work with her and then be watching puppy videos together.”

Somewhere in the MCU afterlife Natasha and Tony are shaking their heads and wondering why the next generation Avengers appear to be non-existent.

Expand

Even without the Avengers as an official group, there's Captain America (Sam), America Chavez, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Ms Marvel, She-Hulk, Hulk, Wong, the Eternals, Shang-Chi, Hawkeye (Kate), Hawkeye (Clint), Moon Knight, Black Panther, Namor, Ant-Man, all who could probably help out with a world-ending threat. I'll grant that the Hawkeyes are by far the least superhuman, some of the rest aren't near NYC, and so on. But the downside of a connected universe is sometimes you wonder why everyone isn't pitching in. I guess this is true of the comics too. But the movies lately have generally dealt with this by either not having a world-ending threat or inventing some good reason why it's not the full MCU roster.

(There's also Thor, Loki, Captain Marvel, Photon, the new GOTG, Deadpool, Wolverine, but they're all currently stashed off-world or off-universe.)

From the Brave New World thread, spoilered just in case:

I'm cautiously optimistic. I think this has a chance to be Marvel's next Guardians. A rag-tag group of misfits saving the world. Whether it works or not will depend a lot on the chemistry of the cast.

Expand

As far as that goes, some groundwork has been laid.

Yelena and Alexei - she doesn't always like him, but he's her dad, and while he's been written to be a bit of an idiot I think he does care for her. They never got the chance to make new memories as a family with Natasha, so this could be their new start.

Bucky and John - they spent most of FATWS at odds, and for good reason, but with the whole Captain America thing out of the way they might be able to come to terms with one another.

Yelena and Antonia(Taskmaster) - if the writers are smart, they'll expand on the tie between them, that they were both manipulated by Dreykov when they were too young to really understand what was going on. Now that they're both free of all that, a friendship developing would be interesting.

Ava's the outlier here, though no longer having a body that's on the verge of disintegrating opens up the possibility for interaction beyond her being in pain. So there's stuff to work with, they just have to do that.

Florence Pugh Calls Thunderbolts* An ‘A24-Feeling Assassin Movie With Marvel Superheroes
By Ben Travis   March 6, 2025
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/florence-pugh-thunderbolts-a24-assassin-movie-marvel-exclusive/

  Quote

When Jake Schreier got the job of directing Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, it came with an all-important directive from the top: “‘Make it something different’,” he tells Empire. Because, while on the surface it’s a team-up of several existing MCU characters from across various previous projects, this isn’t just an Avengers redux. The Thunderbolts are barely powered, barely heroic, and barely a team – a jumble of misfits and murderers, all looking for some kind of belonging. In the hands of a director previously behind indie favourites like Robot & Frank and Netflix hit Beef, the result is something with a tone distinct from any previous Marvel movie.

“It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,” Florence Pugh laughs to Empire, reprising her role as Widow-trained assassin Yelena Belova, previously seen in Black Widow and Hawkeye. Schreier has form in that arena, given Beef was an actual A24 production. “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different,” he notes. “There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
*  *  *
That indie sensibility doesn’t just emerge since the Thunderbolts members are largely power-free (Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, who can phase through objects, comes closest to having a special ability). On a character level, they’re all a little bit lost, looking for belonging, purpose, and – perhaps – redemption. Particularly Lewis Pullman’s mysterious ‘Bob’, the unknown quantity among the team. “Bob is going through what all of them are probably, secretly, going through,” Pugh teases. “Yelena sees parts of herself in him. She’s always been someone that wants to look after people. She has a sweet spot for him, and essentially likes looking after him because he’s useless. He’s absolutely useless.” The Thunderbolts might not be the team anyone expected – but it might just be what each of them needs.

In Thunderbolts*, Avengers Tower Is Now Val’s ‘Watchtower’: ‘A Symbol Of Things Taking A Darker Turn’
By Ben Travis   March 7, 2025
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/thunderbolts-avengers-tower-val-watchtower-darker-turn-exclusive/

  Quote

.... And under Val’s reign, Avengers Tower is now known, somewhat ominously, as ‘Watchtower’. “We know what that tower means,” Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier tells Empire, teasing a portent of things to come. “Who’s the person you would least like to own that tower, that means so much to so many people? Can you use that as a symbol of things taking a darker turn?”

It’s clear Val will be integral in bringing together the mismatched group of misanthropes who come to form the Thunderbolts team – the most Avengers-adjacent among them being Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, formerly the Winter Soldier. “It’s like the Al Pacino quote from Godfather III,” laughs Stan. “Every time I try to get out, they pull me back in. Bucky is going to come across this group, and realise that they’re quite similar, in a way, to him. So I think he feels he can contribute and be a leader.” Hopefully he can bring a dash of that old-school Steve Rogers heroism to the building that was once Avengers Tower.
