There are rumors and signs that a spin-off is in the works, possibly 5 episodes for the first season and possibly filming sometime in the latter part of the year, maybe September. There are also rumors that Martha will head the spinoff but that's strictly in the rumor stage for now. It's not clear what the spinoff would be about, but rumors say something to do with UNIT. I'll report more when things become clearer

As posted in the Media thread, here's a preview for the upcoming Christmas special, presented during the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con yesterday:

Also during the panel, with showrunner Russell Davies and stars Ncuti Gatla and Millie Gibson, here are a few things said:

- Verada Sethu's (new companion for Season 2) name is Belinda Chandra

- As seen in the Christmas special preview, Nicola Coughlan will play a character named Joy

- Jonah Hauer-King will be part of Ruby's storyline in Season 2

- The outfit from Rogue is Ncuti's favorite costume so far

- Davies said there will be more music coming. In Season 2, there's an episode packed with music, though it's not a musical

The Christmas special will be broadcast and stream at 17:10pm (5:10) GMT UK time on December 25 on BBC1 and iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ internationally (that would be 12:10pm ET in the US)

Fixed time, added comment

Regarding Disney's involvement past Season 2 and the spinoff, the official line is that Disney will decide on doing a new deal for more seasons after they see how Season 2 does and the BBC will make a decision on new seasons after they know what Disney will do (per Davies). The tabloid The Sun reported yesterday I think that the show is being axed but it was full of a lot of right wing anti-woke nastiness that it's hard to take seriously but it created a stir in the media and among fans. The Mirror reported on the Sun's report and asked for a comment from the BBC, who indicated more or less what I said in the first sentence. There are rumors that Ncuti will not return after the second season, which the Sun also mentioned in its report. There was also a silly rumor that David Tennant would be coming back to replace Ncuti, but that doesn't seem to jib with the rumors the show is axed. Showrunner Davies has said previously that Bad Wolf and the BBC have a plan on more seasons if Disney doesn't do a new deal. That probably means a new international partner(s), possibly with less money

'Doctor Who' returns — now with Alan Cumming!
"The Traitors" star is coming to wreak havoc on Ncuti Gatwa.

Quote

As revealed earlier, the Fifteenth Doctor will find a new companion called Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, who previously appeared in the explosive episode "Boom." For his part, Cumming has previously played King James I in the 2018 episode "The Witchfinders." This time around, he'll be lending his voice to Mr. Ring-a-Ding, described in Disney+'s press release as "a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally." However, in episode two of this new season. Mr. Ring-a-Ding — as teased in the official still below — escapes his show and makes it into the real world. And he's not a fan of what he sees.

In a statement, Doctor Who showrunner, executive producer, and writer Russell T Davies said, "Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it's an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS."

Premiere is April 12. Not indicated in the article, the time it will drop on iPlayer and Disney+ will be 8am UK time and then later in the evening on BBC One. That means 3am ET in the US for me instead of last season’s 7pm ET Fridays. It will also mean midnight for those on the West Coast. But though I’m retired, I get up at 6am ET every morning, so I can watch the show when I get up on Saturdays before I read social media. I suppose I can live with that. Interesting that they changed the streaming time from midnight; I hope we learn why

As announced by Disney, Freddie Fox, recently doing "Slow Horses", will guest star this season. It's not clear if the BBC wanted to keep that a secret for now as he wasn't mentioned in their press release
