tv echo November 11, 2022 Share November 11, 2022 (edited) Sex and Revolution: ‘Andor’ Showrunner Tony Gilroy on Challenging the Limits of the ‘Star Wars’ Universe By Adam B. Vary Nov 10, 2022https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/star-wars-andor-same-sex-couple-revolution-tony-gilroy-1235428948/ Quote Let’s start broadly: How did you approach building Cassian’s arc for the season? You know where he’s going to end up, so we want to take him as far away as we possibly can be to begin to show his origin story. So this first half of the show was in my mind called The Education of Cassian Endor. How do you take somebody from being a disillusioned, cynical, self-interested loser, to becoming committed to something and understanding what they’re committed to? We knew what the final scene of the whole season would be. It’s not like there’s an algorithm, but you know intuitively, well, he’s gonna have to go through quite an emotional, philosophical educational odyssey. He’s learning what the rebellion means from multiple intake delivery systems. How many of those can we have and how dramatic can we make them? How can we put that in an adventure story so it doesn’t feel it’s the lesson of the week? That’s the goal. tv echo November 14, 2022 Share November 14, 2022 Performer of the Week: Andy Serkis By Team TVLine / November 12 2022https://tvline.com/2022/11/12/andy-serkis-performance-andor-season-1-episode-10-kino-loy/ Quote THE PERFORMER | Andy Serkis THE SHOW | Disney+’s Andor THE EPISODE | “One Way Out” (Nov. 9, 2022) THE PERFORMANCE | “No one is getting out!” With those five, roared words, Andy Serkis shifted Kino Loy into a whole new gear, and Disney+’s Rogue One prequel series truly kicked off a thrilling prison break. Up until this point — or, more precisely, the close of last week, when Kino and “Keef” (Cassian) learned that Level 2 rioted and in turn got fried upon learning that a “freed” prisoner instead had been recirculated into the system — Kino had been a dutiful “company man,” keeping his crew in line as they steadfastly assembled Imperial whatchamacallits. But having heard tell of the true nature of their sentences, and with more than a little nudging from Cassian, Kino with those five words put Unit 5-2-D on notice, that there was only “one way out” of this existence. By staging an escape. NOW. After 5-2-D effectively overthrew their own room’s guards and then empowered neighboring units to do same, Kino and Cassian made their way to the command center, where Cass beseeched his brother-in-arms to use the PA system to rally the rest of their troops. Here, Serkis carefully tempered Kino’s tone, starting out with a rote recapping of the prisoners’ newly gained upper hand. But when Cassian taunted him, “Is that the best you got?,” Kino/Serkis infused the rest of the speech with a passion that could only inspire. “Wherever you are right now, stop the work, get out of your cells, take charge and start climbing,” he instructed the Narkina 5 population, Serkis’ voice intensifying with every syllable. “We will never have a better chance than this, and” — echoing what Keef had said earlier — “I would rather die trying to take them down than giving them what they want. There are 5,000 of us! If we can fight half as hard as we’ve been working, we’ll be home in no time…. One. Way. Out!” Throw in the sadly ironic moment at the end, where Serkis chose just the right smile and delivery to announce that Kino is unable to swim to freedom with the others, and you have a defining Andor performance. 1 Link to comment

The industrious and self-sufficient people of Ferrix have managed to avoid drawing the attention of the Empire, until Cassian makes a pretty serious mistake in the premiere that causes long-lasting ramifications for his community. With how far afield they are from the Empire, it's no surprise that Gilroy doesn't think they're that aware of them. When asked, Gilroy answered, "That's one of the first things I asked. And you know what? Most people don't know. I don't think anybody on Ferrix knows anything about it. I don't think so." * * *"I don't think they know about the royal family. I don't think they pay much mind to that. I mean, how many beings are in that gigantic galaxy? I think the vast majority of all of the creatures and beings and sentient things that are in the galaxy, I think the knowledge of the Jedi and the lightsaber is a pretty small number." Disney+’s Rogue One prequel series had no Jedi, lightsabers nor talk of the Force, zero Darth Vader, and precious few foam latex aliens. Instead, many franchise fans got the live-action story for which they have long clamored, a street-level look at life for “the rest of us” during the Empire’s rise. Those who stuck with the slow burn were rewarded with the finest Star Wars series yet, rife with terrific performances, distinctly memorable set pieces and compelling characters that cemented their place in the sweeping saga’s lore. Andor (Disney+) There's a scene late in Andor's first season where Stellan Skarsgård's rebel leader Luthen Rael gives a monologue about the sacrifices he's made in his fight against the Empire — his soul, his future, everything — and it's one of the best-written, best-acted descriptions of the toll the fight for justice takes on the fighter ever depicted in film or television. It's intelligent and adult and weighty. It's really about something. And the whole show is like that. Every five minutes, you'll say, "I can't believe this morally complex spy thriller about fascism is a Star Wars show on Disney+." Andor would be an extraordinary achievement on its own, and it's doubly so for the franchise constrictions it works within. -Liam Mathews 2022 in Review: Biggest Plot Twists By Team TVLine / December 4 2022https://tvline.com/lists/plot-twists-2022-tv-shocking-moments-lord-of-the-rings-she-hulk/911-lone-star-judd-son/ Quote Andor ... tv echo December 9, 2022 Share December 9, 2022 The Best TV Shows of 2022 By Caroline Framke, Daniel D'Addario Dec 6, 2022https://variety.com/lists/best-tv-shows-2022-andor-euphoria/ Quote 5. Andor (Disney+) ... Look, no one is more surprised to see a “Star Wars” prequel to a prequel on this list than I am, but “Andor” forced me to concede the obvious. In tracing the journey of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) from loner mercenary to the diehard rebel of “Rogue One,” “Andor” paints a detailed, convincing picture of how fascism spreads, clamps down and inspires uprisings. What Tony Gilroy’s series occasionally lacks in episodic structure it more than makes up for in careful characterization and admirable worldbuilding. It took an unusually shrewd approach to establishing its place in the enormous “Star Wars” universe, which can otherwise can rely too heavily on branded lore and the get-out-of-jail-free card that is The Force. Throw in precise production design, epic directing and excellent supporting turns from the likes of Genevieve Reilly, Fiona Shaw, and Stellan Skarsgård and you’ve got yourself a party that not even I, a snobby critic absolutely exhausted by TV’s constant stream of IP spinoffs, could turn down. The Best TV Performances of 2022: Pairs Edition By Caroline Framke December 7, 2022https://variety.com/lists/best-tv-performances-2022-bridgerton-andor/sara-ramirez-and-cynthia-nixon-and-just-like-that/ Quote Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgård (Andor, Disney+) ... Though Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgård shared only a few scenes in the first season of “Andor,” they had to make them count: Their characters coming together provides the catalyst for the entire show. When they separate, they’re still two sides of the same coin: two restless men who will do whatever it takes to get what they want even as try to ignore their beating hearts. As per the classic “Star Wars” trope of a hero having more in common with their adversary than they realize, Luna’s damaged, flinty mercenary is more in step with Skarsgård’s ruthless revolutionary than either realize. It could’ve been cheesy, but watching these two bend toward each other even from lightyears away made for one of the year’s most satisfying payoffs, which is a testament to how comfortably Luna and Skarsgård slipped into their deceptively tricky roles from the start. 2022 in Review: The 25 Most Heartbreaking TV Character Deaths By Team TVLine / December 8 2022https://tvline.com/lists/tv-deaths-2022-major-characters-dead-photos/dr-alan-strauss-the-patient/ Quote Maarva, Andor ... Sad as it would have been to actually see Cassian’s mother pass on, simply HEARING that it happened off-screen, as Episode 11 opened, somehow hurt more — especially given B2EMO’s wimpering reaction. Soothing the sting is the fact that Maarva and Cass shared loving words the last time they saw each other, and that the Daughter of Ferrix left behind a most empowering message for everyone else. Shanna Marie January 28, 2023 Share January 28, 2023 I think Andor has made it to Duolingo. I'm doing the Norwegian course, and it tends to be a bit nerdy, with a lot of translations of quotes from various Star Wars films, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc. There's an exercise in which you hit a button to play audio of a word in Norwegian, and then there are buttons with English words, and you match the sound to the button with the appropriate English translation. The button for the word "climb" was written "CLIMB!" All other words in this kind of exercise have been strictly lower-case, so it's got to be an Andor reference (or possibly Rogue One, but I think it was Andor that retroactively made that a thing going back to Rogue One). 4 Link to comment

This thing of leaving everything open I think is bringing anxiety to actors that needs to be treated. We’re all thinking about something that we can’t know.” * * * “The second season ends where ‘Rogue One’ starts. We’re not changing the ending of ‘Rogue One’ so that’s it. It’s a nice feeling, it’s like a long film… It has a beginning and an end. We all know what’s going to happen,” he said. “There’s something interesting with the second season, which is that I have a different feeling every day I go to set. Now I know, not just that the series was well received and that people liked it, but I know why they liked it. That’s another tool we have these days through social media. We actually listen to audiences and critics. We understand what things connected and what didn’t connect. It’s kind of cool to have an opportunity to go and execute another season having this information. It’s, in a way, a season that will end up representing the audience in a different way. Somehow, the audience is part of this season because the interaction we had served as inspiration.” Edited March 6, 2023 by tv echo 2 2 Link to comment

Shanna Marie March 8, 2023 Share March 8, 2023 The episode "One Way Out" is a finalist for the Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation, presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association. I'm not sure it has much of a chance, since it's up against Everything Everywhere All at Once, and that seems to be sweeping all awards, but it's an honor to get nominated. 5 Link to comment

tv echo May 5, 2023 Share May 5, 2023 (edited) Andor Season 2’s Final Three Episodes Cover The Three Days Before Rogue One – Exclusive By Ben Travis April 5, 2023https://www.empireonline.com/tv/news/andor-season-2-final-three-episodes-cover-three-days-before-rogue-one-exclusive/ Quote Now, with filming on Andor Season 2 – set to skip a year every few episodes – moving beyond the midway point, Gilroy has teased a little more of what to expect from the time-hopping final run, telling Empire that the final block of three episodes will specifically cover “the last three days before Rogue One”. And with a finite end point in view, no punches are being pulled. “The risks this season will take are very different,” promises Luna. In what way? “In every way,” says Gilroy. “Look, man, I’m not trying to make a career here; if anything I’m on the downhill side of a long career. But this is an opportunity. This is 1,500 pages of the most dynamic material in these people’s lives to deal with. We got it right the first time, and you don’t want to let your foot off the gas.” Edited May 5, 2023 by tv echo 4 1 Link to comment

I've hoped that they would actually do a bit of a coda to Rogue One, letting us see how any Andor characters (if any) who are still alive react to those events. I've joked that I'd love to see Syril shaking his fist and shouting, "Andor!" or Dedra smugly saying, "Told you," but the events of Rogue One are so huge, and since that was a prequel we don't get to see any true follow up to the aftermath of it. We know what they do with the plans, and then there's Rogue Squadron, which we can pretend is a tribute, even if it's a retcon, but I just want to see the Rogue One team's sacrifice acknowledged in some way. We know Mon Mothma lives, so we could at least see her reaction. Maybe even just in a post-credits scene that gives us a coda. 5 Link to comment
tv echo May 10, 2023 Share May 10, 2023 (edited) https://peabodyawards.com/award-profile/andor/ Quote Few other long-running franchises loom as large in today’s contemporary pop cultural imagination than Star Wars. With its many trilogies, spin-offs and TV series, George Lucas’s original creation can feel like a ubiquitous force as all-encompassing as its fictional and much-reviled Empire. Yet amid stories of destiny-driven heroes and doomed superpowered villains, Tony Gilroy’s Andor tackles that familiar galaxy with an eye not (just) for spectacle but for a keen-eyed commitment to do what sci-fi and fantasy can do best: mirror our own mundane trials and tribulations back with enough remove that their lessons become unavoidable. Andor follows known scavenger Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he unwittingly becomes radicalized in the wake of a police state intent on crushing any and all signs of the Rebel Alliance. And in the process, it introduces us to a network of galvanized figures who wish to better the state of the galaxy, painting a portrait of how revolutions are built on their own recurring failure, of how hope can and needs to spring eternal in the face of authoritarianism run amok. For conjuring up a terrifying world uncannily like our very own (despite taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far far away), one that stresses the need for grassroots organizing lest a fascistic state wholly subsume any spark of rebellion—and for imagining how IP-driven storytelling can flourish in today’s corporate-driven television landscape—Andor receives a Peabody.
