Brookside July 6, 2020 Share July 6, 2020 Maybe in this age of coronavirus I should be grateful for contact with another sentient being, but when that sentient being is a fruit fly, I'm not. Any suggestions? (I try sneaking up on them, spray bottle filled with water on hand, but they seem to possess supernatural powers.) 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/
MargeGunderson July 6, 2020 Share July 6, 2020 I had good luck with this fruit fly trap and this fruit fly “punch” to attract them. But I think you can just make some simple syrup (1 c. water, 1 cup sugar, heated to dissolve) and put it in a bowl or cup to trap them as well. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/#findComment-6216441
biakbiak July 7, 2020 Share July 7, 2020 (edited) I use a small bowl and put a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and a drop or two of dish soap (the vinegar attracts, the soap kills) with good luck. My husband uses the same mixture, but puts it in a DIY fruit fly trap made out of a soda bottle. Use a 16 oz plastic bottle, cut in half and invert the neck part into the body. Flies can get in, but have trouble getting back out. 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/#findComment-6222072

I did the same thing, but with a mason jar and a piece of paper used as a funnel. 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/#findComment-6222353

I just saw this thread. I cover the bowl with plastic wrap and punch tiny holes. Like the soda bottle in the post above, they can find their way in but not out. Brookside August 11, 2020 Author Share August 11, 2020 Thanks everyone. Still battling. They're just so little and nasty. Frankly, I'd rather deal with wasps. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/#findComment-6279726

annzeepark914 February 27, 2021 Share February 27, 2021 I get them from the little pots of mint and basil that I buy in supermarkets. I need to find something to maybe spray the soil as soon as I get the plants home. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/110326-fruit-flies/#findComment-6632163
