Show synopsis:

Quote

A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese-American woman, Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to San Francisco, she finds her hometown is overrun with crime and corruption and her own parents (Tzi Ma and Kheng Hua Tan) are at the mercy of a powerful Triad.

Nicky will rely on her tech-savvy sister (Shannon Dang), pre-med brother (Jon Prasida), Assistant District Attorney and ex-boyfriend (Gavin Stenhouse), and new love interest (Eddie Liu) as well as her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice ... all while searching for the ruthless assassin (Gwendoline Yeo) who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her.

Inspired by the original series created by Ed Spielman, KUNG FU is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Quinn's House and Berlanti Productions, with writer/executive producer Christina M. Kim ("Blindspot," "Lost") and executive producers Martin Gero ("Blindspot," "LA Complex"), Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "The Flash," "Riverdale") and Sarah Schechter ("Arrow," "The Flash," "Riverdale").

The quarter-life crisis line never fails to make me laugh. Not that mid-twenties can't be intense, with so many life changes - it isn't that, just the way they put it.

Is this expanded description the first time they've specified San Francisco as the setting?  KF:TLC, for those old enough to remember, was always ridiculed for their generic Chinatown setting (Sloanville) up and moving to be within driving distance of locations thousands of miles apart.

I believe so; I hope they actually get to film there!

That would be amazing. But it's the CW, I can't imagine them having enough budget to do more than maybe a few establishing shots.

One thing (among many) that I loved about the old show Continuum is that they owned their Canadian setting. I wish more shows would do that.

I hear The Flash is currently slated to begin filming its seventh season October 1, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is targeting an October 5 Season 6 start, both in Vancouver. All American is looking to begin filming its third season Monday in Los Angeles. Of the remaining Berlanti Prods. series, Superman & Lois, Titans and newcomer Kung-Fu are eying mid-October starts. Breakout Stargirl is on track to begin shooting its second season at the end of October, while Doom Patrol‘s third season is expected to start production in January.

As is the case with any production during COVID, the dates are tentative and subject to change. Some of the series mentioned in this story had earlier target start dates that were subsequently pushed, a common occurrence amid the ongoing pandemic.

Warner Bros TV, the studio behind all Berlanti Prods. series, declined comment on the new dates.

I don't really understand. Is it just supposed to be a coincidence that this has the same title as the David Carradine show?

It's a remake. But you know, loosely based on the basic premise. Earlier versions of this project were a little closer to the original show, but the lead was always going to be a Chinese/American woman instead of a white man.

REALLY loosely I guess.

Putting aside the gender, definitely putting aside the ethnicity (since Carradine was playing something he wasn't anyway), even putting aside the time period (a huge one to put aside)... the hardest change to recognize as legit is it actually HAVING a cast. The original show had TWO constant characters. Two. And one only appeared in flashbacks. It had a few other occasional characters, again only in flashbacks.

Again leaving ethnicity aside, this show seems more like KF:TLC, being based in a modern day Chinatown and the lead character defending the community. With a touch of the original series flashbacks to Shaolin training maybe?

I guess we need to start setting up some other topics?

With a premise so wildly different than the original, it was a little hard to come up with anything more than placeholders until we had a chance to see what the actual show would be like. But feel free to suggest new ones.

I'm not so good with coming up with snappy titles, but here's some suggestions for topics -- everyone feel free to add or suggest something:

  • Kung Fu in the News and Media,
  • Cast and Crew in Other Roles,
  • Olivia Liang as Nicky Shen,
  • Culture and Identity in Kung Fu -- for discussing how accurate is the representation of martial arts, and Chinese and Chinese-American culture.
  • Kung Fu vs. Other Shows -- compare/contrast topic to the previous 'Kung Fu' series, and other similar shows.
  • Spoilers and Speculation,
  • Relationships ?

We could keep the Social media/BTS topic.
