  1. Paula proves she really does belong amongst the Mossbachers by cluelessly fucking around with a poor guy's life.
  2. To my surprise, Damian Warner has already announced that he intends to do another three years and compete in Paris. Paris should be when most of the 2016-era stars of the women's swimming team hit their physical peak (fingers crossed for no injuries, obviously), and more and more young talent coming into full strength. I think 2024 will be a huge year for the ladies in the pool. Titley has also said that he thinks the men's team might finally be in a position to compete a bit more by then. I'm a bit unsure what's going to happen in athletics in general.
  3. Looking into it more thoroughly, Canada will finish twelfth on the medal table at worst. The only country that can move ahead of us is Brazil, which has two gold medal matches later tonight and would move ahead if it wins either of them.
  4. Gold! This moves Canada up to 11th on the medal table for the moment.
  5. If Mitchell wins gold, this will officially become Canada's most successful non-boycotted Games by all metrics, as we'd tie Barcelona's gold medal tally and exceed it in silver and bronze.
  6. And there it is, Canada's historic medal #23! Good job, Laurence & Katie.
  7. We have one more decent chance in canoe sprint. Other than that, hope for a random cycling medal. Indeed it did, we're now twelfth, heh.
  8. Sinclair didn't even play in the final third or so, and didn't take a penalty kick. It was the teammates that she inspired into the game over her long, incredible career who got her the gold. What a wonderful tribute to her storied career.
  9. Gold for Canada! What an ending for Christine Sinclair! Grosso, you hero!
  10. And now it's Lindahl vs. Labbé for the gold.
  11. Congratulations to Mohammed Ahmed on Canada's first-ever medal in the 5000 m. Damn, great effort by Gabriela to finish fifth in the 1500 m. No triple for Hassan, but still a crazy feat.
  12. Apparently from the reports I read sport climbing has succeeded in generating a lot of buzz at these games (same with the skateboard events).
  13. Actually, now that I think more on it, I realize I had forgotten two other medal possibilities: Mohammed Ahmed in the 5000 m and Evan Dunfee in the 50 km racewalk.
  14. Sweden and Canada both asked that it be rescheduled because playing in the midday heat in Tokyo would be potentially dangerous.
  15. Canada is now at 19 medals (18 plus the one banked in women's soccer, which will be gold or silver). I think Vincent-Lapointe/Vincent can get us another canoeing medal to get us to 20, and the 4x100 relay has a shot. Not sure if we can scrounge up another to equal the Rio tally, though we've surpassed Rio in both gold and silver medals. Indeed, in the gold medal count this is already Canada's best Olympics since Barcelona and #2 all-time in non-boycotted Games.
  16. The women of the Low Countries own the heptathlon, it seems.
  17. Warner records 63.44 m on his second javelin throw attempt. His lifetime best is 64.67, while his season best is 59.46, so he's delivering in yet another event here. He's going to go over 9000 points at this event. Mayer gets 73.09 on his second attempt, but he's out of road at this point.
  18. And mere hours after I wrote that Canada had only had one surprise medalist so far in these games, we get our second surprise medalist! The unheralded Lauriane Genest takes the country's first bronze medal in women's keirin (track cycling).
  19. Holy shit, Damian Warner cleared 4.90 on pole vault. God truly is on his side.
  20. We're at 16 medals (again, counting the soccer team). Halfway through the decathlon, Warner is an extremely solid bet for medal #17. I'd bet on Vincent-Lapointe and the Vincent sisters to medal in their events, so #18-19. Weirdly, all of the above outstanding prospects are potential gold medalists too. Once you get beyond that, it's a bit thinner. Lepage for a second decathlon medal? Katie Vincent joining Laurence on the individual podium? Both possible, if perhaps not likely. The 4x100 relay team probably has a shot at a medal as well. Canada has only had one real surprise medalist of these games so far, but that was a surprise gold medalist, the women's eight rowing team.
  21. De Grasse wins Canada's first track gold since 1996, and first 200 m gold since 1928.
  22. Warner gets 47.48 s, a seasonal best, and +134 points on Mayer in this event alone. Lepage runs even better, despite the taping on his knee. Moloney records a superb performance to take first and firm up his second place at the moment.
