  1. Here's a funny factoid: last week when the smoke was so bad I was lamenting the fact that I couldn't walk outside and didn't have a treadmill. What I did have was a small garden's worth of produce to process. In one day of working in the kitchen I got 8000 steps! And I have a tiny kitchen! I was shocked!  So don't discount housework or yard work as an alternate form of stepping!

  4. Please don't feel like you have to have a weight-related goal to participate in here.  Any project that you might want to tackle in your life, we are here to support your getting started if you feel like sharing.

    Accountability time - the holiday weekend really threw me off, I only just found time to weigh in today and I barely lost anything so far this month.  It's been a crazy week at work, but I'm doing my best to meal prep and keep my exercise going.  All of your step counts are very motivating!

  5. Hey, I think that's awesome, @Kyanight and @Kohola3.  Do what you can, one step at a time.

    So I generally find business buzzwords incredibly cheesy, but I like this one so please bear with me. Remember that for the best chance of success goals should be SMART:

    S - Specific

    M - Measurable

    A - Attainable

    R - Realistic

    T - Time-based

    As Janelle has proven, vaguely wishing to be "healthier" isn't of much use without a specific plan and timeline and a way to measure progress. Personally, Realistic is the one that usually trips me up. Nobody's likely to lose 100 pounds or get $100K out of debt this month, I'm sorry to say. But we can start the journey strong!

    Just a tip to keep in mind if you find it helpful!

  6. My first thought was, "Uhhhh, who's willingly going to Portland these days?"  Then I actually watched the video and it appears they really spent most of their time on the coast.

  7. I kicked a serious Diet Coke addiction last fall, and the withdrawal headache was no joke. My hat's off to all of you who have quit or are quitting pop!

    Two different family members have invited us to dinner this Friday and Sunday. I'm already starting to plan what low-carb dessert and side dish I can bring so that I don't mess up my eating habit (TM Dr. Now) too much.

  8. For some reason I feel like she wouldn't actually have the courage to be that confrontational in person, and especially with non-strangers. I can see her sulking in a corner, texting with her holier-than-thou friends and ignoring the party.

    But either way, I'm certain she's no ball of sunshine.

Strive With Janelle is now offering accountability coaching for $45 for either 14 or 21 days (she doesn't know).  Let's save ourselves some dough and some futility and support each other with our goals - for a whole month!  Your goal may be working on your weight and health, finally getting the garage cleaned out, starting that hobby or project you've always wanted to do, repairing a relationship, whatever.  We are here for you!  Please share your goals here and we'll help keep everyone on track.

    I'll admit it - I went hog wild this summer and now need to lose some weight.  For my situation, I know that keto and intermittent fasting work really well for me.  I'm committing to sticking to this plan for September.  I'm also going to alternate yoga and cardio workouts each day.  And then I'll tackle that garage...

    Let's make this a great month and set ourselves up for a healthy and happy fall and winter!

  10. Over in the Janelle thread, it's been posted that she is selling her services as an accountability coach for 14 (or 21, she doesn't know) days. Now I happen to have some goals I want to achieve, but I'm certainly not paying a slug-like z-list reality star to do it. Maybe some of you are in the same boat.

    Would anybody here be interested in a thread for our own accountability group? You all feel like friends, and I'd love to be able to support each other more to create some positivity during these rough times. Plus, my competitive side says I bet we could accomplish way more in 14 (or 21) days than Janelle's clientele. 😄

    PBS had a great miniseries titled Frontier House about 20 years ago. Three families living the 1870/80s in Wyoming. They all lost incredible amounts of weight, especially the menfolk. 

    I freakin' loved that show (and Colonial House, and Victorian House, and Texas Ranch House, etc.) I would be all over a place that offered a real living history experience. Not to give Meri ideas...I'm sure it would be way too much work and not enough polyester.
