  1. It killed me to see what Jack did with that Beluga caviar!  That was at least $1000 worth.  You don’t sprinkle it on pasta, and you don’t serve it in its tin.  It’s properly presented in a bowl on ice, with caviar spoons, blini and maybe some accompaniments.  Obviously the guests didn’t know any better either.

Maud telling Oscar about her "business" and saying how much she doesn't want to be part of it didn't seem like scam behavior to me. Maud didn't imply or hinted that she needed Oscar's help or his money. Maud didn't imply or hint that she even wanted Oscar to go to their office. Oscar invited himself to that office with no pressure from anyone to do so; Oscar offered his money with no pressure from anyone to do so. No one asked Oscar to write a check, or two checks. Oscar led himself to the slaughter, and refused to take 'no' for an answer. Maud Beaton, quite literally, didn't have to convince or lure or pressure Oscar to do anything. That's what kept me on the fence about whether it was a scam.

Classic grifter technique.  That way when the conned tries to get their money back, the grifter can say "I didn't ask, you forced your money on me".

Re: mourning.  The Reverend only died hours ago (Larry is still in his evening wear from the night before).  Marian will change her clothes after her walk, and a nice nap. She's worn the outfit with the black trim before, it's strictly a style choice.

  3. Don’t forget that Fellowes had an imposter hero show up in Downton, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he’s recycling that plot for Maud’s storyline.  I 100%believe that there is some kind of scam afoot…nice young ladies in the 1880’s didn’t wait outside for their date.

  4. So Luke probably has kidney cancer, which often presents as a pain in the back.  There was surgical treatment of cancer existing then, especially once ether was developed, so it *could* be possible that they do a nephrectomy and give him a year. But I don’t think Fellowes thinks that way.  I wanted Luke to go to Mass General in Boston and have a successful operation.  Poor Ada.

  5. I really liked this…I actually didn’t binge it because I wanted it to last.  My only quibble is with the casting of young Polly…it wasn’t believable that she was Hillinghead’s daughter, she looked far too old.   Greta Scacchi was great as old Polly though.

I pay attention to costumes, and I wonder if Esther’s red coat is a reference to the girl in the red coat in Schindler’s List.

You can bet that Lee Rosbach would be well aware of this bullshit and have his plane tickets at the ready.

Well, there was plenty of toxic behavior on the OG, and Captain Lee never seemed to take action unless it was directed toward him.

I think the wagon wheels looked an awful lot like MoonPies with spokes.

Or Ring Dings?  Not sure if that’s a New England specialty.  Same size, but with crème filling, not marshmallow.  Anyway, I’d eat them!

I was in London last week, so I bought a package of Jaffa biscuits, since they’ve had to make them before.  Decent, but not something I’d buy again. :)

  8. I've been re-watching old seasons, and I completely agree with the need for an overhaul.  Nina only sees what would look good in a magazine...does she realize that magazines are slowing dying?  Elaine is absolutely useless, and Brandon thinks he's witty in the vein of Michael Kors, but he's just obnoxious.

While we're at it, I'm over avant garde (they don't know what it is), and the unconventional materials challenges.  And having them make a couture dress in 10 hours...what's the point of that?  To show that it can't be done? They're not inspiring in any way. I'd like more apples to apples challenges...everyone must make a pair of pants, or use the same (nice) fabric.  What if they all had to use striped fabric?  It would be interesting to see what different designers would do with that.

And agree with the above...I could care less about their backstories.  I just want to see beautiful clothes (or at least interesting ones.  And Mickey Mouse ears on a jacket aren't interesting or beautiful).

Can't you buy garment steamers for under $100?  Why are they using irons, which are obviously not intended for that purpose?

But if they had steamers we wouldn't get the ironing mishaps (across the whole franchise!).  It's as much a trope as the lame beach picnics.

Heck, if I were working the laundry, I'd buy a steamer at the first port we reached. They're not that expensive.

Haha…I was in Italy this year, where a lot of the hotels don’t let you have an iron in your room.  I walked down the street and bought a great steamer for $50!

I also agree with Margot about these Stepford Wives. They all look like they should be on one of the Bravo Housewives shows.

That’s probably their goal.  “Pot housewives of LA”.  Coming soon from Bravo.

  11. And really...aren't tribal lands supposed to be a separate nation with a negotiated treaty?  That's why you can have casinos that aren't subject to state law, correct?  I'm somewhat ignorant on the issue, but it seems like tribal law would be equally valid for crimes committed on tribal lands.  I don't think Native Americans gave up their rule of law completely when they negotiated treaties to cover things like federal coverage for healthcare, etc.  I'd be interested to learn more.

  12. Jaimee ended up paying...I don't know if they Venmo each other or production reimburses them, but it was telling of Culver's character that he's never stepped up.  And then he was looking for cash.  Maybe Mommy doesn't let him have a credit card.

I'm not sure how I feel about Praje bringing in voodoo as a religion for a dress. Would it be okay to send an elegant nun outfit down the runway?

There was that Met exhibition a few years ago that was ecclesiastical, and there were a few Dolce and Armani outfits that were definitely elegant nun outfits.
