    S01E02: Cursed

Again, have to agree. They threw a whole bunch of stuff in there; imagery from half a dozen other genre IPs, names from Arthurian legends, this fantasy trope and that, weak attempts at subverting a few of those tropes ... and then under-wrote all of it, like they were afraid that we might get distracted if they included polished dialogue or characterization.

Yeah ... I watched a lot of this pretty early today and I didn’t want to be the first to post this stuff, because I’m sure there’s an audience for the show and I don’t want to scare people off. But yeah, they needed to put a lot more effort into the writing and character development to catch my attention. Seems like it was “make it look vaguely like Game of Thrones” first, worry about creating three dimensional characters ... way later, or never. It’s all kind of flat and humorless.
  3. People being charged—including minors? Asking, not arguing. I don’t know either. I feel like I wasn’t aware of this until the 2010s (the “oh shit if the kids take pics of themselves and text them, they’re technically distributing CP” thing). But I’m not a lawyer or a teen. 🙂

    S01.E01: Nimue

Eep, trigger warning: while not as graphic as Game of Thrones, they are definitely going for dark/violent, and there's some animal stuff in this first episode. I hope it's just for 'inciting incident' purposes and not an ongoing thing. ETA: Minor E02 spoiler:
  5. Ah, good call. I did wonder why he did it, but I didn't wonder too hard because Niles is reliably the worst and of course he spaced Cliff.
  6. 'Drag Race' stars to perform drive-in shows across U.S. amid pandemic Re: RuPaul and social media ... I just went to check the podcast, which I stopped listening to when it became a nonstop product plug (same reason I had to stop listening to Ross Matthews's podcast), but it seems like there hasn't been a new episode since March. They used to come out at least once a week, I think.
  7. Right now they do sort of feel like they’ve been teleported in from a CW DC show.
  8. Cliff speaks for me when he says “Fuck Dorothy, I’m team Jane”. I was ready to mentally check out of Rita’s community theater until the play turned out to be mostly about her. Why does Valentina look familiar? Because that’s Lorena from True Blood. Niles continues to be the worst.
  9. Even taking into account that the events depicted happened so long ago that everyone was impressed by a phone that takes pics? (Meaning, so very long before the metoo era, and before people had really come to grips with the child-porn implications of teens 'sexting' each other.)
  10. Podcast listener: I just listened to the audio version of Vanished about Michelle Le / Giselle Esteban. They play the audio of Giselle threatening Scott and it sounds SO FAKE at the end. It sounds like a normal squabble at the beginning, but when she starts saying “I will take your LIFE and you can take that to the grave”, and especially when she says “this is your LAST and FINAL warning” she sounds like a teenager reading, not 100% confidently, from a bad script. (Then she repeats “last and final” to make sure we get the redundancy ...) I understand that she was convicted, definitely not questioning whether she did it, more wondering if they re-created the audio using (bad) voice actors. It just sounded so weird and hokey. It probably doesn’t help that I just finished a podcast series with tons of audio interviews with Israel Keyes, which all sounded depressingly convincing.
  11. I did like that for each arc, it turned out that what they were really looking for was intimacy (and/or friendship). I'm not sure if a sub-theme was 'hookup culture leads to increased exposure to predators of all kinds', since basically everyone got raped or taken advantage of. Or, in cases like Kwame, also made others feel like they had been deceived. Or, like Bella, had put a friend in an unsafe position (locking Kwame in a room with the other guy). Maybe this is a too-simplistic read of things, though.

  15. I didn’t make it through all of Glee, but this number always stuck with me. It starts out with Mercedes, but quickly becomes a Santana spotlight.
  16. They've already updated this article from 2018: The 'Glee' Cast's Tragic History: From Cory Monteith to Mark Salling I had no idea Mark Salling had killed himself. I only knew about Cory Monteith.
