  1. Reminds me of when they dropped "Kyrie" in that one dance scene in GLOW season 2.

  5. Which actress are you guys talking about? If Dani, I’ve felt like she’s trying to do some broad northern thing, either like she’s in a Noah Hawley show, or she’s ... channeling Melanie Griffith in Working Girl? Agree there’s no southern there.
  6. At some point last night, I realized that they had to throw in that thing with Owen telling Dani and Jamie (later on) that the kids had somehow mysteriously forgotten everything, because otherwise the setup with Gray-Haired Jamie telling them their own goddamned story back to them at Flora's wedding would make no sense. I had the same feeling in HHH when it turned out that
  7. I’d be super interested in your take on HHH. It’s also extremely character-driven (“haunted people” is an apt way to put it). Please report back if you do watch it. 🙂 Think I’m going to do a rewatch myself.
  8. We did a full rewatch of this recently. It still holds up pretty well, although it’s such a relief when they decide to be a bit more historically accurate from season 2 onwards. Years later, I’ll still watch anything with Natalie Dormer in it.
  9. They used some repetition in HHH, and I was mostly okay with it, although I would clench at “in the night, in the dark” by the end.
  10. Good point on “why did Henry have a self-haunting”. Maybe I missed it: why did Dani’s ex-fiancé stop haunting her in mirrors? Was there a resolution to that, or did it stop when she told Jamie about it?
  11. And she slept. And she walked. And she slept. And she walked. And she slept. And she walked.
  12. Is this in reference to the thread title here? It looks right to me but I might not be awake yet.
  13. I think that is hand-waved away by the fact that in the final 1987 scenes, Henry and the kids say they’re going to America. I guess they stayed and she lost her accent. Yeah, this just didn’t hang together with anything approaching the precision of Hill House, and it lacked the jaw-dropping family dynamics and directorial tricks that pulled me (a non horror viewer) in for many rewatchings. Weird pacing, too, with everything screeching to a halt in the penultimate/exposition episode, then the whole back half of the finale being its own mostly separate story. Unfortunately I had figured out who Carla Gugino had to be quite early on. Although 20 years later seemed awfully soon for her to be full gray. I’ll probably rewatch some of the earlier episodes to see if I get more from Owen and Hannah.
  14. (GLOW has some truly hideous but absolutely spot-on 80s clothing.)
  15. I don’t quite get why they had Dani tied up and gagged for so much of the episode. Was the real plan to kill her, or not? Why let her witness everything first? I think I was just frustrated that it gave the character/actress so little to do.
  16. Happy to see Kate Siegel (Theo from HHH) again. But I think I watch too many period/costume dramas. These way-flashback scenes just look off somehow, or cheap, and I find myself wondering if that’s why they opted for black and white.
  17. Sally Wainwright 'emotional' to receive OBE after success of Gentleman Jack
  18. Update: without spoiling anything, I’m finding myself slightly more engaged in episode five, stuff is happening and a few things are clicking. And some genuinely creepy things.
  19. The hell did I just watch. Well, damn. How did someone manage to get control of this IP and completely fuck it sideways? I won’t be able to stop myself from watching some of it, but What. The. Hell. I thought people might just be being nitpicky about color and gender blind casting (I’d only heard a little), but in what universe was that Sam Vimes? Why is Sam Vimes wearing eyeliner?
  20. Agreed. I never want to be the first person to post negative stuff (because I can be a picky crank and I never want to scare anyone off a new show with my crankiness), but now that we’re in the safety of the episode 4 topic ... it seems like ... yeah, a lot of this isn’t working. The cast isn’t gelling for me, the accents aren’t working (why is Dani so BRASSY American), Carla Gugino’s wig wasn’t working for me, creepy kids only hold my attention for so long, dollhouses don’t scare me, and the editing / directing seems so unpolished compared to HHH. In episode one when the cook is driving Dani to the manor, they do this weird editing for the conversation in the car, and the sight lines seem so wrong. I barely know what sight lines are, and I still noticed. It couldn’t have felt less like the actors were actually in the same car. I loved HHH and I feel bad, because this feels like it was rushed or something, or has True Detective S2 curse, and I’m sure a lot of people won’t make it through the first episode. Thanks to all who clarified that the wedding didn’t actually happen.
