  1. They were being used for hysterectomies to be able to remove the uterus through a smaller incision (less pain, quicker recovery, etc.). Problem was, some of those women had known or suspected cancer and by chopping up the uterus, they were actually spreading the tumor cells into the abdomen. Some surgeons are still using them, although they swear it's safe because they're putting the uterus into a bag before chopping away. I wouldn't want to bet my life on that. Nothing like taking a small, contained cancer and spreading it every damned place. ETA: And that has to be the worst name ever for an instrument. "We're gonna chop it up into tender, juicy morsels!" Eww.
  2. I understand that. I don't understand why ubi thinks getting double rewards isn't a good deal. I don't understand how you all didn't understand I wasn't quoting myself. :P
  3. smrou, love the pic of him cuddling under your neck. He obviously thinks he's still a wee baby kitten. :)
  4. I've never seen a cat with freckles before, BYAM! It's even on his skin (lower eyelid and paw pads). I've seen dogs with freckles like that, but never a cat. He's so pretty!
  5. I'm not sure I understand. If you max it out and never pay, you only get a cash-back reward once, when you buy something. Whereas if you spend and pay it off, you'll regularly be getting two cash-back rewards.
  6. I've read that cats can alter their meows and purrs to make us more likely to respond to them, so why not a soulful, "get me OUT of here!" stare? And once they sucker-punch you with that look, it's impossible not to respond, isn't it? Apropos of nothing, have any of you ever had a cat with a hyper-flexible tail? Swiffer's tail is a sight to behold. I've seen her carry it coiled forward against her flank while walking, and when she's really happy, that thing corkscrews around in constant motion. It just seems way more "bendy" than any other cat I've had. It's not kinked or stiff - she's perfectly capable of straightening it out.
  7. I have a photobucket account I use for uploading pictures, but there are others you can use. Swiffer is a complicated kitty. She spent her formative weeks in a cage (born in a shelter), and has this need to be dominant and in control at all times. But when I can get her to let her guard down and snuggle with me, she purrs so loud and so hard, she literally drools on me. So bossy and vulnerable at the same time. That look in her eyes is exactly why I wasn't about to leave her in the shelter. I just couldn't.
  8. Or see her stroll casually through the living room with a turd stuck on her tail... LOL
  9. We were talking earlier about pets with that intense gaze that makes you think you're looking at a person instead of an animal. Swiffer finally cooperated yesterday and I got this nice shot. Her lighter-colored ruff shows up nicely here too. :)
  10. Congratulations, BYAM! Holy crap, SS! So they were apparently going to let the dog have a crack at another kitten? Yikes, indeed.
  11. Yeah, OK, WTH was that? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6v_ZP8nww
  12. Definitely a cat person here. I like playing with my SIL's dog, Daisy, but I always tell her to keep her tongue to herself, please! Can't stand being licked or jumped on, which I realize is random as I don't mind the cats licking me or even sleeping on me. I'm not fond of scooping the litter-box, either, so I sprung for a Litter Robot that self-scoops. I just toss in a scoop of new litter every few days and change the bag in the drawer underneath once a week for two cats. And there are seals and filters to keep the smell confined to the drawer, so I think it's worth it.
  13. Argh! Every time I manage to block that from my memory... Ye Gods, I'm old and out of touch. I'd never heard of mrweebl before. Much less did I know there was a LONG version.
  14. According to iSpot, her only commercials are as the wife of the sun in the Jimmy Dean commercials.
  15. Some of the shelters around here won't let you adopt a black cat in October, because they're afraid of what some idiots might do to them. :( Interestingly, though, I adopted Swiffer in October, but I apparently gave all the right answers. I didn't even realize the questions weren't just idle chit-chat. A coworker grumped to me that the shelter I got Swiffer from had put her on a "don't ever let this person adopt here" list. But then she tells me all the answers she gave to the questions, and I wouldn't have let her ever have an animal, either. Have you ever had an animal die before? How long ago? Why did they die? Her responses were "yes", "yesterday" and "I tripped over it and dropped a full cub tote on it" and volunteered that she was trying to find a kitten that looked enough like the dead one so the kids wouldn't figure out the animal was dead and not just missing for a day. *headdesk* And then she volunteered that a previous kitten had gone outside and they'd decided it wanted to play and would come back when it felt like it - instead, it was run over by a car within the hour... She's telling this story in the report room and suddenly looks up and realizes we're all staring at her in horror. "Oh, c'mon! it's not that bad, is it?" And we're all kind of nodding our heads... Yikes.
  16. Oh, he's gorgeous, Hidebehind! What's his name? That plume of a tail! The self-possession evident even as a kitten... It's almost as if you're not looking at an animal, but another person. My Swiffer has that in spades and it's the reason I had to have her. I adore Lucy and she adores me, but there isn't that spark of sapient intelligence looking back at me. But that might be because she's endearingly near-sighted... As far as color = personality, I believe it, even though it's anecdotal. I've had torties, and they can be rather stubborn and feisty - Tortie-tude, I call it. The calicos that I've had were either ditzy and/or troublemakers. The greys that I've had were, to a cat, chickenshits. Sorry, Hidebehind! Gingers, especially ginger boys, are laid-back and very friendly, they're amazingly tolerant of little kids. I prefer black cats and think they're smart, but that doesn't translate into obedience! Usually the opposite, but I love the little buggers anyway.
  17. I know it's downright trendy these days to feature a gay couple in commercials, but I like this commercial for Kodak:
