San Diego. That first house was really cute. And I liked that she liked all the character. As a single woman, I'm not sure why she needs so much space. The condo seemed like a good deal. Would she have wanted to replace both bathrooms if dad hadn't said anything? House with garage was OK. Is she running a guest house? Always worrying about guest baths. Can't believe she had to pay that much more. And spending to add that loft?! She must be a good financial planner.

What is with her driving style - one partial hand on the steering wheel and the other resting on the glove compartment.  Someone should also show her  father how to cook scrambled eggs and not massacred them into little bits.  And he was the one pushing to have a gas range.  Sure hasn't helped his cooking ability.

    New, "Mansion VIbes in Louisiana"

(People do have a double king bed

Single mom finding a home, she wants a mansion, but her friend is trying to talk her into being more conservative.  Personally, I'm with the friend and her conservative idea.   Shawanda owns a tax business, and two of her eight kids still live with her. Shante is the friend. Shawanda's son was murdered in a senseless crime.    She is thinking 4 bed, 3 bath, Slidell, her max is $400k, Shante wants her to stay at $250k.  Shawanda wants a main bedroom big enough to have two king beds.

She's another house hunter who wants to show everyone she's made it.   She wants a pool, columns, a showplace, 4000 sq ft.

House 1-a Bright blue house,  in Slidell $399,900, 4 bed, 3 bath, with a pool. 2899 sq ft, interior colors are orange, purple, bright blue, red, furnace/heat pump is where the pantry should be.   back yard is all pool and deck.   It's right on the lake, boat lift, dock.   Great outside deck stairs will make it easy for the alligators to drop in for breakfast.   Realtor points out flood insurance will be up to $6 to 7,000 a year, plus regular insurance.  everything needs paint, but she likes it primanry bedroom is huge, ensuite is really big.  Shawanda's shirt matches the walls in a few rooms.

House 2-Slidell, cheaper, not a mansion, $316k, 4 bed, 3 baths, family room, HOA $650 a year, gym, and community pool, 2208 sq ft, bonus room would be perfect for an office. kitchen is nice with an island, and a big pantry.  great walk in closet, 2 guest bedrooms upstairs, back yard is nice, but on a pond.

House 3-Slidell, a mansion with columns, $309k,4 bed,3  bath, 2422 sq ft., kitchen is nice, lots of granite, family room is nice, with a fireplace, back yard is huge, guest rooms are decent sizes, guest bath is nice (in spite of what Shawanda says, I like it), primary bedroon isn't big enough, because it won't hold 2 king beds, and a sofa. she doesn't like the main bedroom or ensuite.

She buys #2,   Her mirrored stand alone fireplace is hideous.    Lots of amenities with the HOA fee.

I would have bought #2 for the price, the location, and the fact it's a new build, and has a community pool.  #3 had small bedrooms, and it needed too much work, #1 was too much extra for the insurance.

New Chicago, burbs vs. vintage in the city. However, husband is a cheapskate and doesn't want to pay the price for vintage in the city. They want 2500 sq ft, she wants burbs for the prices and lifestyle.   Budget, his $800k , hers $1 million or higher . He's fine with a fixer, she's not fine with a fixer.

House 1-$799,900, single family, in Skokie, 5 bed 3 bath, 3700 sq ft,  kitchen is huge and lovely, just remodeled, family room is great.   4 bedrooms upstairs, they both need an office, with an daylight basement, family room has a full bathroom, sub-basement is almost all underground so good for his office, back yard isn't huge, detached 2 car garage. Primary bedroom is big, with big closets, and updated bathroom.   guest bathroom is nice,  I don't like that the back slider to the back yard is down a couple of steps from ground level, bad for heavy rain, or melting snow.

House 2-Chicago, near their current house, in Old Irving Park, $675k, Victorian look, next to the highway, on a double lot, 4 bed 2 bath, 2000 sq ft, beautiful floors, she thinks kitchen is small, a full bath off the kitchen area, deck and back yard are great, 2 car garage with an in-law space or office above it, Primary suite is decent size, with a bonus room outside it, full bath with a sloped ceiling, and a shared bath for all of the bedrooms, Realtor suggests extending the kitchen out, putting a master suite on top of it, for $250k.   basement is unfinished.

House 3-Chicago in their current neighborhood $1.15 million, over 4,100 sq ft, 6 bed 5 bath, kitchen is big and totally redone, deck i lovely, back yard isn't big, totally updated inside, but outside is the vintage look husband wants, ensuite bedroom on first floor is big, but not the main, primary bedroom is nice with a spectacular ensuite, 2 more bedrooms upstairs with 2 guest baths. basement has 2 bedrooms and is fully finished.

They buy #3, and paid $1.26 million . I would have bought #3.

Someone should tell that Slidell house buyer that just because she has made it, that doesn't equate to having good taste in decorating or dressing.

Chicago. He was cute. Of course he picked the place in the neighborhood he loved. I'm glad he won't get a roommate. There's no way he wants to share that bathroom. Not sure the place was big enough to get away from the smell of the litter box. Right next to the laundry doesn't seem ideal. He'll have to keep the door open all the day.

Lincoln Park was by far the best area to live in of the three places featured.

New, "Pickleball in Minnesota", couple moving from California to Minnesota

Minneapolis Haley (the brunette) & Kelly (the blonde)moving back to Minneapolis for affordable housing (they were only in L.A. for a year).  They want a ranch, 4 bedrooms (so 2 offices), workout area, big kitchen.   One is an auto service advisor, and the other is a food scientist.   Wants a pickleball court.    Budget $625k, to $575k.

House 1-$525k, 1 story, 2000 sq ft, 4 bed 3 bath.   2 car garage.   It has a basement.  kitchen has island and granite, not a huge kitchen but nice, main bedroom is a good size, big walk in closet, ensuite is nice, backyard patio door needs steps. needs a fence in back, and a couple of trees need to go for the pickleball court.  11 steps down to finished basement.   3rd and 4th bedroom in basement with egress windows, with another bath. I like that the basement bedrooms have egress windows.

House 2-2 story, single family, 2miles from work, $699k, 3 bed 2.5 bath, fully fenced backyard, turnkey so far, 1st floor is great, huge kitchen, 3 bedrooms 2 bath upstairs, main bedroom is huge, ensuite is huge, closet is a walk-in, basement needs drywall, so $20 or 30k to finish.   plenty of room for a pickleball court out back.

House 3-$550k, Split level ranch, 4 bed 3 bath, 2802 sq ft, fully fenced back yard, main living area on first floor, kitchen is big, step down from kitchen to family room, back deck is big, adn raised, plenty of room for a pickleball court,  main bedroom is smallest of the 3 homes, en suite is nice. decent sized closet.   Basement is a walk out, with lots of space, third bedroom and fourth bedroom downstairs, full daylight basement.  (I hate the small main bedroom, and the step down from the kitchen to the family room, with the slider in place, they can't raise the family room floor)

They pick # 3, I would have bought #3. List price was $550k, they paid $575k to avoid bidding war.

New "Thirty Before Thirty in So Cal"

Woman wants a house before turning 30, from her list of 30 things to do before turning 30.  Cory wants vintage, but not the extra price for that.  Wants 2 bed, 2 bath. Parents live Newport Beach.    Budget up to  $600k .  Her parents, and 2 youngest sisters are so cute, and live in the family home, there's another older sister living elsewhere.   She works in the TV and film industry.

She wants Inglewood to be close to her activities, and friends.

Condo 1-$405k , Inglewood, 1 bed, 1 bath built in 1969, HOA is $275 a month,  living room is nice size, unit is second floor.  it has a dining area, and a galley kitchen, she likes the tile countertops.  bedroom is big, lots of windows, bathroom is nice and remodeled with tub/shower combo,

House 2-$595k,  Manchester Square, 7 minutes from stadium , single family, fixer, built in 1927, 2 bed 1 bath, cove living room ceiling, no HOA, lots of vintage touches, kitchen is vintage with tile counter tops and back splash, lots of counter space and cabinets, bathroom with double sinks, tub shower combo, main bedroom is decent size, section of fence needs replacing, and level the backyard (that's one day with a Bobcat).

Condo 3-Ingle wood, $545k , 2 bedroom,  1 1/2 bath  bath, HOA $329 monthly, built in 1983, 1119 sq ft, 2 story condo,  big fenced patio, 1/2 bath 1st floor, kitchen is granite counters, needs back splash, laundry closet on second floor, 2 bedrooms upstairs with decent size, upstairs full bath is big, and nicely redone.  (I had to laugh when she said the kitchen needed a skylight, it's on the first floor of a 2 story condo.

    She picks #1 , I would have bought # 3.  List was $405 k, she paid $455 k

She sure has a hangup about those sisters of hers.

  5. The Alabama couple really had some major quirks.  Had to move 45 minutes closer to be near her grandkids.  Guess they never heard of getting in a car for a relatively short drive to accomplish this.  Also very critical of faults found in these homes, especially in their price range.  Never met a person that had to have the same cabinetry throughout their entire house unless it was a custom house that they were building and even then wouldn't always be the case.  And let's not forgot the structured panel wiring.  Very picky for what they wanted to spend on a house.

Columbus, GA.   I hope they were very careful about exactly where they bought. I lived near there for seven years, some neighborhoods are scary.    Some areas there have a lot of crime.   You also have to worry about where the tornado tracks have come through in the past, I've found tornadoes follow geography.

House 1-Really nice house, very open, and I love the LVP. new build on 2 acres.   Ensuite is huge, it has the largest size shower I've seen in a long time.  Husband says neighbors are too close, but they're not close at all.   She doesn't like the light LVP floors, mud tracking in.

House 2-with a basement.   I don't like the way the street is higher than the house, water there is a big issue.  I like the screened in porch. main ensuite is OK, but smaller.   Basement this is on an acre.    I would really worry about water runoff, and grading.   I just don't like this house.

House 3-5 beds, media room, office space. Love the kitchen, gas stove, new build, graded grounds much better than #2.   corner lot. another ensuite bedroom, 2 bedrooms with shared bath, main bedroom and en suite are huge.   no basement, but a bonus room.

    They choose #3 .

I would have bought #3 for the lot grading, and corner lot, and the new build.  I'm guessing it came with a builder's warranty.   I bet they have a septic tank and field too.   With new builds there, make sure the utilities you need are available, with cable check directly with the cable company, and for internet service, don't just think you'll be able to get cable internet.   I had satellite TV and internet for almost 4 years, very expensive.

Certainly get a lot of house for your money there!!

    How cool!

When we were in Palm Springs, Mr. Outlier and I did a big slow-roll bike tour of the various neighborhoods, looking at the houses.  We do this in pretty much every town we go to if we have the time, just to get a feel for the various places.  But since I'm a MCM aficionado, it was a must-do for Palm Springs.

And for Palo Alto, too, which is awash in Eichler (and other MCM) houses.  We rode 25 miles, and it might have been an even better experience than Palm Springs because lots of the houses in Palm Springs were clearly Airbnbs and looked photo ready, while the ones in Palo Alto looked like people actually live in them.  Who knows what open-concept remodeling horrors await those who go inside them, but it's a real treat riding by one after another after another at 7 mph.

Frank Lloyd Wright houses leak like crazy.  Ah, the things we sacrifice for beauty.

It's bound to be waaaaaay over a million now.  People are digging the MCM, and having Eichler on it just pushes up the price tag.

Couldn't find a decent house under two million in Palo Alto when we were house hunting there in 2000.

I have to laugh at the new one tonight shopping in the DC/Maryland suburbs.    The first house had a decent basement, so the realtor  says the two basement bedrooms, and bath make it a five bedroom house.   Not at all, no egress windows, means in a fire the basement is a death trap.

Then the second one with the basement that needs finishing, clearly had water marks on the concrete block wall under the window, that doesn't mean you finish it with a little drywall.

The townhouse was third, but it didn't feel 'warm' enough for them.   When a new build comes with window bars, it's a big no for me.

They buy the first one.  I hope they take down the popcorn ceiling now, and not after they move in.

None of the above three homes would have been an easy commute to DC for him, especially house #2.  Not  sure why they would have even looked out in Dunkirk for a place.  Traffic is really bad in all the surrounding areas of DC.

Not only did she not want to do any work AT ALL; she had very, very specific wishes for colors and finishes.  She seemed to expect that the previous owners should redecorate to her preferences before handing over the keys or that they somehow would've had her exact taste and preferences.  Even in a well maintained home with good quality finishes aimed at mainstream tastes, there is bound to be something or other that a buyer might wish had been done differently.

Knightley was really kind of a bad name, IMO.  I kept thinking of nightly, like Nightly News.  Not good.

Amber kept pronouncing Knightley with two syllables like that made it so big time while her friends pronounce Knightley with only one syllable.  Think it was all part of Amber's personna shtick.

I will just add that in the sad sad history of racism in America, many places shut their public pools rather than integrate which also was a hardship for poor white children.

But take a listen to Dylan's Only A Pawn In Their Game which is as relevant now for different reasons as it was in 1964

But there are always exceptions like @Empress1. Tennis and golf aren't traditional sports for POC but you have the Williams sisters and Tiger Woods who are prodigious talents. But they had parents who for whatever reason recognized their prodigious talents and were able to nurture them.

I think one of the tragedies of bigotry and bias is all the potential wasted or stunted because of lack of just having the ability to see if one enjoys or is good at something.

It was so easy to guess what Chicago condo the woman was going to buy.    Mom certainly planned on having a place to stay when she came to town, and you could see how ticked she was.  $175k certainly was a small budget for Chicago, especially since the HOA fees will come with the condo.

Orlando from Nashville.  $500k budget for her, $400k for him with DIY possible.  The wife is another one who wants to spend more to impress other people. He wants one story, she wants two story.   She's a trainer, so wants a big garage to run a fitness center out of it.   I guess HOA rules never crossed her mind.

First house- two story, but only bare concrete floors, not finished concrete.   No pool, but HOA community pool and tennis courts. Upstairs floor is tile, and LVP. main bedroom has popcorn ceiling, and ugly carpet.  I love the husband's statement about being open to DIY was a lie when he sees the main suite and bathroom.

Second house-better location, on the west side.  $480, 4 bed 3 bath, 1 story, pool screened room.   Tile floors, several chandeliers, lovely kitchen.   main bedroom and ensuite are great.

Realtor tells the wife about his sold houses that were shown with alligators in the front yard during the showing, and they did sell.

Third house- 1 story, 4 bed 2 bath, est $3k to get rid of the popcorn ceilings.   screen pool, only concrete around the pool, so he wants to put in fake grass.   ensuite counter is a strange color choice for the rest of the bathroom.   split bedroom plan. kitchen isn't huge, but very updated.

They chose #1, bought at list price of $400k.

L.A. area, new, "Trading Up to a House in Los Angeles" Ricky the realtor and his adorable wife Shaquinta (sorry if I misspelled her name).

First house-nice family room for an office.

The second house needed to be restuccoed immediately.  5 bedrooms.  Lots of interior room, but back yard is awful.

    Third house looked nice

They bought #2, $749k list, $785k purchase price.

I'm very tired of people like Ricky wanting 'Grandeur" which he keeps calling "Grand".     For under a million, or better $2 million, in L.A. you get grand, but not for less than $800k.

New, "From Homelessness to Queen of Her Castle"   Mother and daughter buying a home in Atlanta.

Amber, and daughter. Knightley.  I already like the friend, Brandi, and the realtor, Tonia.   She rented a townhouse, and now she's looking for a house.

Wishlist-$325k, and she doesn't want a fixer.   She wants a single family, and a townhouse for the better value.  Her little daughter wants an ensuite, and a fireplace for Santa.

House 1 3 bed 2.5 bath, $335k, $38 a month HOA, with a pool and playground in the community.  Unfortunately with popcorn ceilings. kitchen is nice, lots of granite counter tops, yard is fully fenced.   Est, $2k to scrape the ceilings.   With washer and dryer. There's a hall bath for Knightley.   main bedroom is big, ensuite is nice, closet is big.  I don't like the idea of going over budget, and wanting to change bathroom counters, mirrors, etc.

House 2-Townhouse, $310k, Amber hates the shutter colors, there's a swimming pool and playground, 1891 sq ft, 4 bed 2 full baths, and 2 half baths. HOA is $95 a month , 1 car garage, kitchen is nice but laminate counter tops.   gas stove, Second floor is en suite for daughter, and main bedroom, ensuite is nice. She's getting picky over wooden face plates on the outlets, they're a dollar each at the hardware store.

House 3-Single Family, Woodstock GA, 1104 sq ft, $324,000 , $55 a month HOA, 2 bed, 2 bath, no pool in the community,  Kitchen is smaller, but efficient, fenced back yard. HOA takes care of front and back yard maintenance. main bedroom is nice, with good closets.

    She picks # 2

She should be so picky in her wardrobe choices.  Thought she was something else.  Glad she has her room for twerking.
