The Gawker trial was a thing of beauty, likely never to be replicated again. Peter Thiel was bankrolling Hulk Hogan's lawsuit and had a lot of money to burn. Without Thiel it's quite likely Hulk Hogan wouldn't have had the resources to fight against Gawker successfully. Second the fact that they were able to successfully argue that it was Terry Bollea as a private citizen in the video and not Hulk Hogan the public figure, and as such not of interest to the public, was a good one too. The Duggars' attorneys may be good but not that good. And unless they have a Peter Thiel-esque character lurking with a vendetta against Bauer media...

Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events
PikaScrewChu replied to maraleia's topic in Counting On
What could JB sue TLC for though? They're likely on a season to season contract. TLC's lawyers have probably combed over all the Duggar contracts at this point to make sure they have the upper hand. As for Anna I don't think she knew the extent of Josh's past. However even if she didn't know the basics of sex she should have known the difference between what was a good touch and what was a bad touch. The J'Slaves seem to have known, even if they had said on Megyn Kelly it was no big deal. I do not get what Jim Bob is thinking right now. At all. These people had the potential to become the fundie version of the Kardashians. Yet they managed to screw up something that was right within their reach. These people are not business savvy in the least. It seems to be dumb luck that they even got a show. -
Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Whaaaaaa... Will this finally be the straw that breaks TLC's back? -
The dress was a PR stunt for TLC. The dress was a sample from Kleinfelds and they had a limited time to make alterations. The strapless dress became the patented t-shirt top bridal gown. Kleinfelds has at least one dedicated consultant for brides who need a gown that fits their religious criteria or can be modified for religious reasons. There's been at least one Orthodox Jewish bride on Say Yes to the Dress. They could have found something modest and stylish with one of those consultants. The sample dress was likely free due to the cross TLC promotion and the cost of alterations minimal. Doubtful TLC and/or Kleinfelds would have swallowed the cost for a brand new made to order gown.

Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Ashley Madison has mostly bots posing as women. It's very difficult to meet actual women on there. You have to spend money in order to "chat" with a woman. Men will spend a lot of money on Ashley Madison. Josh, on the other hand, did have an OKC profile which is easier to meet people. I doubt the women knew he was that Josh Duggar if he did cheat anyway. Anna enjoys the perks of being a Duggar daughter-in-law. She gets to fulfill her Godly duties by having a new arrow for her quiver every 2 years (give or take). Her father-in-law finances her lifestyle. She has sister-in-laws always at the ready to babysit. Josh can do what he wants. It has always been that way and things are never going to change. Anna is happy as long as he makes sure he gets her pregnant so she can bear the next M'child. -
I wonder what's going to happen to that house eventually. We now know why they built it the way they did but the layout for a house that huge is ludicrous. You have the boys' dorm, the girls' dorm, Michelle/Jim Bob's bedroom, and what was Josh's room. Anna is pretty fertile so it's not out of the realm of possibility she and Josh end up with a dozen kids. Same with Benessa. The Dillards won't. I have Derrick walking off into the forest one day and resurfacing three years later in eastern Siberia as the Prophet of a cult in my betting pool. The only scenario I have is that the Smuggars or Benessa end up in there eventually to house their broods. I can't see anyone willingly buying that place except to have the land.

Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp

Wait until he meets Bin's BFF... Flame! Or whatever that guy's name is. -

All four of them have been married off to line Jim Bob's pockets. There's only so many shows you can do about wisdom teeth removal and eating in restaurants before it becomes stale. Jill and Jessa's weddings were arguably the peak of 19 K&C. Now there's only Jana left and she's holding out. They've had to turn to the boys courting and getting married to keep the show going. And they have to prove that the courtship model is working. Totally! I hope by Hannie et al. Jim Bob and Michelle are too tired to foster this courtship model on them. We all know Golden Child Josie is going to get what she wants anyway. -

High praise from a man that reminded us that no matter what a stripper tells you, there is no sex in the champagne room. None! Not safe for work, obviously. I'm disappointed they aren't clear heels. Aw shucks. I thought they were on the verge of a comeback. -

Those are definitely clear heels and actual high heels. Not low heels or wedges. Have we ever seen a Duggar in actual high heels? Edit: Austin and Joy didn't even score a People sidebar this week. Damn. -
Jinger would have married Satan himself if it meant getting off the compound.

I wonder why they went with the two law firms listed in the suit. Normally the bigwigs hand down these kind of lawsuits as scraps to the minions trying to survive. I am not implying this suit is not winnable or without merit but the one law firm touts working with Disney and other huge corporations. High powered doesn't always mean you get a win or competent counsel (as Jilly Muffin tweeting about the lawsuit shows). YMMV though.

You mean it could run on... Duggar time? *ba damp bish* Just to touch upon the speaking gigs. Normally speaking gigs/acts are booked up to a year in advance for most events, if not further depending on the speaker or performer's popularity. They are announced as soon as people start promoting the event. The general public would have known if Jessa had speaking gigs cancelled as the event organizers would have put out a bullshit "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Jessa Seewald is no longer able to make the event. She will be replaced by <insert name here>". On the other hand Jim Bob and Michelle had major speaking gigs cancelled after In Touch published the story. Jim Bob and Michelle still get gigs, albeit on a minor scale now. They and Josh were the ones to take a huge financial hit from the fallout. The difference between Jim Bob/Michelle and Jessa is that Jim Bob and Michelle can pontificate to a wider audience about marriage, children, whatever the hell their belief system is, and how it has worked for them all these years. Jessa doesn't have much to speak about to a wide audience. Jessa could have been booked for more speaking gigs had she been an engaging speaker at the Southern Woman Shows. I have a feeling she wasn't. The contracts for Counting On would be an interesting one. I assume Josh and Anna, the Dillards, and the Seewalds were getting separate pay cheques from 19 K&C even though they were probably going into the Duggar pot. I would hazard a guess that the contracts for Counting On were based on what the Dillards and Seewalds were getting from 19 K&C.

Guilt by association is a bit harsh. We do not know what goes on in his head. We know he has been taught to obey above all else and purposely kept under-educated in order to stay under his parents' thumb. Just because he "enjoys" the perks of Duggar life doesn't mean he should be judged by his fellow members because he's a Duggar. We truly don't know if he actually enjoys those perks or if JB and Michelle have made the decisions for him that he will enjoy those things. I'm not excusing that they are adults but there's a high probability the adult Duggars do not understand that as adults they have agency and the ability to make choices. There's a lot of grey area between "He's a Duggar, terrible" and "He doesn't know any better". It's not as simple as that.

It seems Jim Bob and Michelle are not well liked in Springdale. Not sure about their offspring. If Josh's behavior was an open book, obviously Jim Bob and Michelle asking for donations and feeding their kids rice three times a day while JB spent a quarter of a million dollars on a failed political campaign was well known too. It seems like Josh got the golden child treatment while the others got the short end of the stick. I'd be pissed if I were JD too. Second fiddle to Golden Boy all his life as Golden Boy did whatever he pleased. Second fiddle to Golden Boy who got a six figure job in DC for being the eldest Duggar boy. Second fiddle until all the scandals broke. Now he has to be the one to step up. I'd be resentful as hell towards Josh if I were JD. Josh gets to screw up time and time again but be rewarded while JD more than likely had to toe the family line. Then everything finally catches up with him, all hell breaks loose, and Josh gets to go slink off to the car lot. "Hey JD. Sorry about treating you like a second class citizen. Can you take Josh's place now? Kthx." I recognize that those Duggarlings are now adults and are still fundamentalists but I do feel sorry for them that they ended up always covering for Josh. Every single one of them.

S04.E21: The Bank Job / S04.E22: Crime & Punishment

I'm assuming the guy that got away when Jake and Rosa busted the scheme was supplying Hawkins' team with drugs or helping plan a robbery. Jake and Rosa were likely extremely close to busting Hawkins. Especially after Hawkins looked through the files at the 99. Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer sort of thing. -

Am I the only one who sat there at the end thinking that if the hackers hadn't been so busy digging up Terry's past that they would have cracked the off-shore bank accounts earlier and it would have potentially cleared Rosa and Jake? It was funny, but time was running out damn it! -
Gil Bates being on the ATI/IBLP board when Gothard was molesting women. Does that count? TLC is just as bad as the tabloids. At least you know what you're getting with the tabloids.
-
I believe TLC knew but accepted the idea Josh was rehabilitated properly. Granted I do not think TLC believed the Duggars would eventually become the stars of one of their highest rated shows at the time. They probably assumed that they would end up like many other reality TV families where the novelty wore off within a couple of seasons.

I wonder what the lawyer representing them thinks of them trying to get a TV interview that will probably involve talking about the lawsuit after filing a lawsuit.
