Some probably thought he'd be just like v1. But 2.0 is extreme. I'm now reading that some people of Hispanic descent are encouraged to carry passports or their birth certificates with them at all times, just in case. In fact, one mom/food influencer has a post on what to do if officials arrive at your house.

I was allowed to bake using a mix when I was in Brownies (they recently changed their name to Embers to be more PC since some children of immigrants come from cultures where being called a "brownie" is a slur) but had to bake from scratch in Guides. Until then, I had NEVER baked from scratch because my mom never taught me! She had to find a recipe from a magazine and I followed that. I made chocolate chip cookies. There were separate baking and cooking badges.

Canadian Girl Guide cookies are boring compared to what you guys get in the US. We basically get chocolate or vanilla sandwich cookies. I think they have/had chocolate mint at one point.

I think there's some estrangement between my mom and one of her aunts' family. This is the only great aunt (or as my mom would say, grand aunt) I saw frequently growing up since she accompanied her younger son and his family's immigration (this cousin uncle had two kids, a boy and a girl, both older than me. I remember wanting a GameBoy because the boy cousin had one. But nope, my mom said it would ruin my eyes) in the early 90s. But after my grandmother passed, I basically did not see them at all. I think the boy cousin's kids are in middle or high school now. And the girl cousin has kids in university. But I may have lost track. This great aunt was the last of four kids from the main wife, I believe. My grandmother had four other younger siblings that survived into adulthood. Different mother though.

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day.

You mean immigrants. Expats go to a country temporarily for work and then return. If I work in the UK or Japan on a visa because some company hires me, then I’m an expat. If I move to either, intending to stay for the rest of my life, then I am an immigrants.

Not seeing this. And no, I can't completely stay away from Zuck's companies because my parent reps communicate with the entire grade on WhatsApp. Plus I own shares and I don't want to sell, knowing that he's going to suck up to whoever is in office in 2028 and beyond.

We don't get Peacock in Canada, but it's available on Prime (I checked). I'll check it out once I finish Wicked.

@Anela I’ve read so many articles on how misogyny in this part of the world is due to colonialism (so not specifically White, Anglo-Protestant males) that I’ve more or less become confused. And a lot of it comes from the hate I faced in a women’s studies class back in the late 90s as well as all the DE&I groups I attended during the pandemic making zero reference to Confucian based cultures, including people whose heritages are from these places on this side of the Pacific. People from these backgrounds live here too, you know.

This. It often ignores cultures of people whose families have been in the new country for fewer than 100 years. Most of these people still have deep connections in one way or another to their ancestral homelands and their cultures. There's also the ignorance of these cultures' histories and I am tired of hearing that cultures' misogyny is related to colonialism. It's not always based on that, and to say that it ALWAYS is dismisses/ignores, say, the 3,500+ history of Confucianism.

I think it's time to admit that EVERYONE is a victim of SOMETHING, regardless of ethnic heritage, gender, religion or socio-economic background. Or whatever else I'm missing. No one is completely NOT a target. I'm seeing that with the narrow view of masculinity compared to femininity, for example. And yes, even middle class/wealthy Anglo-Protestant, hetero cisgender males can be targets (see narrow definition). That said, I'm worried for some of my family members in Hong Kong. It's not a great place to be right now, I don't think. Mainland culture is infiltrating quicker than it should be (Hong Kong is supposed to retain its culture and special administrative status/self rule until 2047). If you're Canadian, you can sort of use Quebec as an analogy. Own language, own legal system, yada, yada. Except HK takes it a step further and has its own currency. They even drive on the left like the British while mainland drives on the right. That's why the current concentration on deportation and tariffs to us and Mexico is crazy when they REALLY should be concentrating on what China might be doing to the world. Just this morning, tech/AI stocks TANKED thanks to the news that a mainland AI company is able to be just as advanced as companies like Nvidia for a much lower cost. Since those of us here are worried that these AI companies could come with other issues (think why they want to ban TikTok) THIS should be the primary focus.

This was one of my favourite books growing up. I’ve read it to my son and asked him if he thought Frances was silly. He said yes and said he ate lots of different things (yep, just not that much protein. Still hesitant to give him kid protein drinks since they’re usually loaded with sugar).

Since these countries don't want the "deportees" back on military flights, where on EARTH are these people going to go? Do they really think other countries are going to pull a Come From Away? There's a difference here. The people who had to land in Gander, NL knew they were going to leave soon. It was truly a temporary thing. This, on the other hand, is something else. Most left their OG countries for a reason.

Current philosophy is that forcing kids to complete a meal "even if it takes all night" will encourage disordered eating so it's not something we do. My son has trouble expressing how he feels about things and is always eager to please. I'm a bit worried about that (that it could lead to him getting into trouble/hanging out with the "wrong" crowd). @SoMuchTV Cousin-nephew is easy, but when it comes to me being the cousin-aunt, my title will depend on the side of the family to the parent. I'm one type of cousin-aunt to the cousin-nephew I saw yesterday, but another type to one of my female cousin's daughters. And me being YOUNGER to said female cousin means I'm something different ANOTHER female cousin's kids because THIS cousin is younger than me. It's TOTALLY COMPLICATED.
-
It doesn’t work that way anymore for a lot of families, eating that one meal. And that’s why moms (since it’s mostly mom who cooks) are so stressed out. We had our extended family reunion with my side last night. By “extended,” I mean my uncle and aunt (dad’s younger brother) and cousins. One cousin and his wife have an 18 month old. He’s sooo adorable! Brings back memories for us!! In Cantonese, the little boy would be called a cousin-nephew due to the generational difference. Chinese family titles are super complicated!

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I'm mostly on Substack since I have a blog/newsletter there. People seem sane. I don't use Bluesky too much though. -
Those problems were even discussed in the Bible! For those who are religious who might want to know.

I come from a culture that has historically been very male chauvinistic with a separation of spheres going back several millennia. Back when I was a kid, my GRANDMOTHER (born in 1923) heard something about her friend’s grandson (millennial) being treated better than the grandson’s sister, she was all “WAH! Gum gow sik!” translation: Wow! How old school! I wonder if this grandson is a total a-hole today. He’d be 40 now.

I've decided that CEOs basically suck up to whoever is in office. So if you get a Democrat in office in 2028, then they'll suck up to them. One reason why I'm not selling shares.

I guess she forgot her own reusable produce bags. I don't use produce bags for things like apples and bell pepper. I DO for leafy greens.

So basically....lettuce cooked in water? Wouldn't it taste....like water? I think my guy would heat up a frozen pizza. But only if there's a pizza he likes. Right now, the only one I have in my freezer is called "Loaded Veggie" (toppings include peppers, sun dried tomatoes, onions and kale).

I have a wall oven! My condo unit is about 15 years old. Had a wall oven in my previous home as well (that building is just over 20 years old now).

I was in disposables when I was a baby/toddler (I was born the same year your oldest was, but I'm several months younger. My mom was in her first trimester when your daughter was born!). I don't remember how they felt, only that my parents repurposed them as extra toy bins for me!! I was mostly (day) potty trained by 2 1/2 though. What's a semi-automatic washing machine? One you have to connect to a sink?

The first thing I can think of is a fridge or ice box. Phones, too, but I'm not sure if I'd consider it a convenience in terms of housework. Same with electricity. You also have to be middle class to have those. But then again, I'm first generation Canadian born.
