  1. I've always chuckled at Claire's various hair styles on The Orville and assumed there's a little nod, or poke, to ST:TNG and Gates McFadden supposedly being fired after season 1. Apparently she kept showing up with new hairstyles on set and it was causing difficulties with continuity or something. When she returned, at the demand of the fans, she had to wear a wig.
  2. In the original timeline, yes. Because she slept with another guy, Ed couldn't fogive and turned into a drunk. Before that happened, he was a great officer in the Union and probably would have received command on a ship without Kelly's help. In the alternate timeline, they never got together and she didn't intervene on his behalf because she didn't know about the consequences of her actions. So, it may well have been that his confidence was destroyed and he never made it far enough to command a ship.
  3. He's going to be a co-lead on a photon entanglement team.
  4. Not sure how reliable this is but apparently the show has been internally renewed for some time. https://tvshowscancelled.com/the-orville-renewed-for-season-3-by-fox/
  5. I think the rejection by Kelly may have destroyed his confidence in himself. If he can't even get the girl, why bother with trying for something harder? Ed slipped into command mode pretty quickly and organically once he was persuaded that he should have been the captain of the Orville.
  6. Claire appears to be of the same rank as Kelly. They both have 3 bars on their silver epaulets. Oops, Claire has 2 1/2 bars which makes her a lieutenant commander, I think.
  7. Same here. Sometimes I don't like a show on first airing but if I go back to it later, I appreciate it more. Maybe I should rent it and give another go. I don't even remember Cleopatra 2525! But then, the premise isn't at all interesting to me. I never really did the spreadsheet thing but I did come across an old notebook where I'd written my tv schedule for the week and noted what to watch and what to record. I gave up cable years ago and don't need to write anything down. I just use Zap2It. If there's nothing on I just read so I'm looking forward to those Orville comics and am hoping they'll start doing novels too.
  8. Keep watching! There is more about Vera's background in later series. I prefer Aiden to Joe although I think I'm probably in the minority. They do get closer as time goes by. Billy was mentioned in passing in one of the episodes. I can't remember the exact line but sounded to me as if he'd died.
  9. What I liked was McGee in charge and barely hesitating to give Vance an order. He should be put in charge before Bishop more often. I'd like to see more of that in the future.
  10. You could be right; I was taking her relative youth compared to Oren into account. Maybe the decision to blow up Krill ships was mutual. I still find Oren's actions worse than hers, especially when he put back on the Union uniform. I think I'll just have to watch the episode again and see if I feel any different. See, this is why I don't want any throwaway lines; we get to debate and participate in the show and I really like that. If everything was explained there'd be nothing to talk about!
  11. Why do we need an explicit throwaway line? That young woman was a victim, both of the Krill and of Oren. I find Oren's actions towards her despicable. Do you think that he'd have taken her with him if he hadn't been able to use her as a weapon? I don't think so. She was a bloody time bomb as well and he didn't seem to care; I don't imagine he'd have kept her around or helped her after he'd blown up as many Krill ships as he could. The Union has shown itself to have some compassion and since that woman is toxic to other beings, they'd send her home to be with her people. The Union probably told the Krill that she was in the shuttle craft with Oren. I'm quite happy that not everything is explicit and some things are left to our imagination, it would get boring otherwise. Someone also mentioned throwaway lines and consequences for Isaac. Did you see him at the ceremony? He wasn't standing with those to whom he'd been closest and there was a great deal of space around him and the rest of the crowd. It's a subtle indication that he is alone, totally. And that is the consequence and quite possibly a seed planted for future episodes/storylines. Seth McFarlane has stated in interviews that he's tired of the dark (emotionally and literally) and distopian outlook in most television today. He wants hope and fun and brightness in his show; that should also serve as a sort of blanket explanation for some of the questions being asked. Just my own opinion of course, no criticism of anyone intended.
  12. I don't think that the new name was the point in itself. To me, it served to demonstrate that the Kaylons were no better than their "masters". Isaac, in his time with humans, had developed separately from the rest of the Kaylons. When he demonstrated his new reasoning, he had to be pulled back into towing the line. His thoughts and reasoning were dismissed by the Primary and the Primary constantly tried to force Isaac into the behaviour the Primary thought acceptable just as the Kaylon masters tried to force the Kaylons into continuing their servitude. That ended just as well for the masters as it did for Primary.
  13. What I liked about the shot after they spaced the engineer was they fairly accurately portrayed what would happen to the engineer. No cartoonish swelling of the body and eyes bulging out and all that. Seth & Co. are trying to keep the science accurate. https://www.cnet.com/news/what-happens-to-the-unprotected-human-body-in-space/
  14. I wonder if Isaac will now stop referring to his race and himself as "superior". I was happy that Ed went to bat for Isaac. He strikes me as a more Picardian captain while, to me, Kelly is actually more Kirkian. I guess that's why I don't care for her much. I liked the resolution and am very glad that I won't have to continue to watch The Orville with bitterness in my heart as I would have if Isaac was was "killed" off. I'm not going to into a lot of detail about the episode as so many others have commented so eloquently about it already. Damn I love this show!
  15. Sadly no. I went to the shallow end and started hoping that those Kaylon trousers would become fashionable irl because they do awfully nice things for butt. It was just a wall of glorious butts.
  16. I think Isaac may have been copied onto the knob thing they stuck on his chest; they did show a close-up of it so I thought that it might be important. Then the primary altered the programming of Isaac in the droid to suit Kaylon purposes. I'm also wondering if there's a copy of Isaac in the Orville's computer system that could help to save the day? There was an episode where he downloaded himself into the ship's systems but I can't remember which one.
  17. Can you call it a first contact when the Kaylons and the Union have been communicating and there's a Kaylon serving on a Union ship? I've started wondering now about Isaac's seeming skirting of the issue when asked about his homeworld. It could be because he was aware of the plot all the time or because he went to the Union with stripped of any knowledge of the plot so that all he had to offer was basic facts. I want it to be the latter so much! I too heard Isaac referred to as "prime" and I'm wondering which definition of the word is meant. It's going to be a long week!
  18. When Alara was in that disaster scenario thing, evil Isaac had red lights so as soon as I saw all those red Kaylons, I thought, "Uh, oh." I hope they're really not going there. I think I'd be more heart-broken than Claire if Isaac is lost.
  19. I'm happy that they left the door open for Colin Mochrie to return. In his last scene there was a British phonebox and U.S. flags so is he in London outside the U.S. embassy, do you think? Broke my heart to see the clip of Jackson. I loved his character and I'd rather he survived than Higgins.
  20. If by baby announcement you mean Leonard and Penny, a thousand times NO! I like that Penny doesn't want kids, not everyone does. A couple can still be fulfilled without kids.
  21. Ed is the captain; it's his responsibility to enforce discipline on board and it was in that capacity that he sent to her room. She's a senior officer and is expected to behave in a professional manner. Was there a human not sent to their room who made a similar outburst and I missed it? Because I don't think you can make that kind of statement unless there was.
  22. I think Bortus should take Klyden back to the homeworld and "divorce" him. So, do you think this episode was a foreshadowing? The Moclan ship using torpedoes when they weren't supposed to and Ed's & Kelly's conversation about the incompatibility of the two cultures? I don't really care for Kelly's character but Cassius needs to grow a pair.
  23. You seem to be missing my point -audiences have no frame of reference for Moclan pop culture or Xelayan either. What makes the earthly pop-culture references so funny is that they are out of context. Anyway, we did see the Moclan game with that egg thing and Ed being injured. Xelaya seems to be an entire planet of serious-minded scholars who apparently hold in contempt anything that isn't "high-minded". There may be more as the series progresses, it's still early days yet. But even if they do, imo, they won't be as funny as two earthers grooving to Journey 400 years later. As for the "average" person, I consider myself one and I listen to classical musical all the time. I like 80s pop music too. I love The Orville but I love Jane Austen too. I don't think it's possible to make a sweeping generalization about what will be remembered and enjoyed in the future. Perhaps in 400 years late 20th century pop culture will be an off-shoot of the Society for Creative Anachranism.
  24. Well, it's not at all practical for the writers to invent more recent pop culture because then it wouldn't mean anything to the audience watching the show and the humorous impact would be lost. Those cultural references are for us, not them so much. And there have been a few times when others didn't get Ed's pop culture references. Maybe I'm reading into it too much but I always assumed if was a bit of an in-joke about needing to use more recent pop culture. And who's to say what "pop" culture will still be known in another 400 years? Bach is still popular today after nearly 400 years so you never know.

    S16.E13: She

When the f&$k did this become the Ellie Bishop show? So sick of it. Gibbs doing that narration when Ellie jumped into the lake had me so hoping that she was going to be killed off. Of course, they'd have to kill off Torres too or we'd have to watch all his teenaged style angst over the loss of his unrequited love. And what was with him filling the jar with water? I didn't get the symbolism. Give McGee some episodes. He's the only reason I'm hanging in. Gibbs looks tired and miserable and isn't interesting anymore. This all just makes me feel sad.
