Or this is some weird creepy underground fight club style tournament where adults watch kids who aren't able to make it to the Olympics (or the equivalent level world championships) fight each other with full contact.

Also if you are some big time karate tournament where your organizers will travel (I assume) overseas to check out a dojo, how is it you don't have someone in your group qualify to act as a referee?

Or the idea if the whole dojos qualifying. It's an individual sport, a tournament like this you would qualify on an individual basis. Ok, so Miguel, Robbie, Eli, and (sigh)Kenny impress you. That means your going to let Dimitri, Anthony and Penis Breath fight in your world championship tournament, too?

This is one of the most hilarious concepts about the franchise. Every single movie and Season has a "magical" move that is used for that one movie/season and then amazingly dumped. Even though were are told "if done right cannot be defended".

#1: Crane kick (used in #2 when chozen just defended it and Season 5, with Silver getting knocked out by it)

#2: Drum technique (used to defeat Chozen, magically never used again. Handy if you want to break 5 sheets of ice)

#3: Performing a Kata (somehow this hypnotised Mike and he lost the fight)

Season 1-4: the nerve punch, used in 4 effectively on Kreese but talked about in 5 but somehow not used.

Season 5: the magical chest punch that knocked the air out of Hawk but somehow disabled him after.

There are probably more but that is all I got.

Well, you can't hand out the secret weapon to *everyone*. He was singling out Kenny for leadership and looking for someone already on the Silver wavelength.

That is probably right, but they're still going up against competition that's been probably doing karate since they were 3. It's like why Europe and South America are so good globally in soccer. Or vice versa basketball, though it was easier for the rest of the world to close the gap then us with soccer.

I can buy an athletic kid in the Valley can rise up quick, and you look at the dojo Silver just bought out, how many are truly focused on the competitions on top of that? I mean, I'm of course rooting for Miyagi-fang, but I can't see TPTB thinking they're going to sell us on any of these kids getting anywhere in a world tournament. Maybe it won't matter, as long as Silver loses.

I suppose the point is that it's Silver's philosophy that needs to be repudiated. And it's a very Japanese concept in losing honorably and earning respect. I could see Robby and all them losing but the contrast of *dishonor* in Cobra Kai wins them respect.

Yeah, the magic moves are a big thing and always silly. I think the punch this season just took it over the top for me. Ah least w/ something like the crane kick

    1. Miagi didn't teach it to Daniel at first because it was too advanced. We know Daniel went ahead practiced it on his own. I have a hard time buying that punch is advanced since Kenny learned it in a few minutes(I was already rolling my eyes at Kenny doing a bunch of training the night before, like that's going to make a difference and not just wear you it, but that's a pretty common trope). Still can't square the idea that Terry was willing to buy off refs to win the All-Valley and this show down, but not teach this punch to Tory or anyone else. And be had pegged Tory as a leader long before Kenny.

    2. At least we know Daniel practiced the crane kick for some amount if time. Certainly not enough to master it in real life, but at least a nod to the idea if would take time to learn. The magic punch is now Kenny's go to move after learning if in an instant, he uses it again in the final dojo fight.

I might be harping on it a bit because Kenny just really came to annoy the hell out of me, and I was really disappointed no one just knocked the shit out of his cocky little ass in the end. Really amazing, considering how much I loved the kid when he first showed up and wanted to see him stand up to Anthony.

  3. What an excellent show. Hoping it doesn't get totally overlooked, having been released along side Cobra Kai.

It seemed to lull a bit in the middle episodes, but overall pretty strong.

I don't remember if it was mentioned, but I assumed that this was a tournament for teenagers just like the All Valley. So all competitors in the tournament would be high schoolers, but from all over the world instead of just locals. It would certainly be ridiculous to have teenagers compete in that tournament if all the other competitors were adults.

As far as Kenny is concerned, he hasn't been doing karate for long, but then again the same goes for Miguel, Robbie, Hawk and Tory when they got to the All Valley finals or even won it. Sam is the only one of the main teens who was already doing karate before the start of the show. And it seemed like she had been taking a break from karate at that time.

Buy that also doesn't address the fact that Miguel, Eli, etc. would have to be at least 17 or 18 by this point. They have been never given us very solid answers about the ages/what year if high school they are, but Sam and her friends are driving in the first or second episode of the series. Kenny just finished 8th grade. He's 14. I commented last season, tournament like the All Valley would absolutely have age and/or weight classes. They wouldn't put a 100 lb 13 year old kid out on the mat to face a 200 lb 17 or 18 year old. So a 14 year old kid w/ like 6 months experience vs. a 17 year old w/ 2 years.

And i just can't w/ the magic punch that apparently only takes about 10 minutes to master, but for some reason Silver is just now sharing it and ONLY teaches to Kenny. Why exactly does he not teach this to Tory now, too(much less the rest of has team, way back before the All Valley)

  5. Omg, I still enjoy this show, but I wish they would tone down the absurdity a bit.

Cobra Kai's taking over the world!🙄

Kenny is just finished the 8th grade(so 14?) and has been taking karate for about 6 months...🙄

Most of these kids have been learning Karate for about a year, maybe two for Miguel and Eli, Sam is the only one w/ more time then that, end they are being considered for some world championship level competition.🙄

I know, suspension of disbelief required, but the show just works a lot better when they keep the stakes a little smaller, more local, more personal. It already requires enough of that suspension to accept that these two dojo's(3 w/ Eagle Fang)composed ENTIRELY of beginners completely dominates a local tournament, but I'm sure now we're gonna end up seeing a few of them facing off against each other(and winning) for some kind of world title.

That makes sense, except that I thought Paxton is now a senior. But even if he is a junior who was injured during sophomore year, doesn't he need to be swimming this year in order to still be considered for a scholarship?

I had the impression that he just gave up on swimming and the possibility of a scholarship after the injury.

The post I was responding appeared to suggest Paxton might have given up swimming BECAUSE missing his sophomore season would take him out if the running for a scholarship, which it absolutely wouldn't. Now, obviously, just giving up swimming and not going back to it after missing that season would take him out of the running for one.

I didn’t even clock the verb tense indicating Captain America/Steve Rogers is alive while I was watching. And then his being alive was kind of glossed over here and elsewhere, with seemingly all discussions of that line in this episode focusing on the appropriateness (raunchiness?) of the humor surrounding a discussion of a person’s virginity.

But that Variety article (thanks for the link, @arc) interviewing series lead writer Jessica Gao seems to point at

      Hide contents

a bigger purpose for the virgin dialogue, which I’m spoiler tagging in case my interpretation is true but not supposed to be revealed just yet:

From these lines of the Variety article:

my takeaway is that Jen suspects Steve is her father, much like Stargirl believed Starman was hers.

Maybe Peggy Carter will be Jen’s mother?

I’m a very sporadic watcher of genre shows, so this speculation may be off-base chronologically and otherwise.

My point is that the humor, offensive or not, may be secondary to the substance of the reveal.

    Spoiler

That would make Jen either at least 80 years old or under 20 years old, so yeah, pretty off base chronologically. And Peggy would have been about 70 by the time Jen was born.

P.S. Editing to add, if she were to actually suspect that, it makes her comments about Steve's ass super creepy, so god no

I think coaches recruit during sophomore year (there are only a certain amount scholarships awarded for D1 teams per year), and he was injured during that time so he missed out on scholarships. The recruiters also probably won’t pay attention to a junior who was injured the prior year.  I’m guessing then he realized swimming wasn’t his entire life and decided that he needed some decent grades to get into college.

That is not at all how recruiting works. Missing a single season due to injury, whatever year, is not going to take an athlete off of recruiters radars. And you can't even sign a letter of intent until you are a senior. You can get scholarship offers and make a verbal commitment, but that is completely nonbinding for either side, it's mostly just a way for an athlete to encourage other schools to lay and focus their efforts elsewhere. Very few athletes have hard offers after their sophomore year, even fewer make a verbal commitment at that early stage and limit their options that early. Most have not reached anything close to their peak by that point. Missing a sophomore season isn't going to equate to missing it on scholarship opportunities, recruiters will monitor, evaluate, and pursue uncommitted athletes up to signing day. And this isn't 1960, very few injuries are viewed as career ending, especially for a young athlete.

@Chicago Redshirt, thanks for the explanation.  The first paragraph I had picked up from Ep 1.  The second one was helpful, as I didn't understand how Dream/Sandman could promise fortune, etc.  But...  wasn't the whole point of the glass sphere and painted symbols on the floor to encase his powers?  If so, how was Burgess benefiting from him, the riches, the wealth, etc?  Or was any of that actually from/due to the Sandman?

The timey wimey stuff is interesting...  I can't think of anything worse than to be an eternal being who experiences time the same as mere mortals.  Ugh.

It was largely due to the possession of his bag of sand, ruby, and helmet. He had imbued them w/ some degree of his power, and just the fact Burgess had them in his possession appears to grant him some degree of success, wealth, fame, health or extended life span. I don't think it's a coincidence he dies AFTER has mistress steals them.

  10. Wtf, this show went full stupid.

So, were the Titans actually charged with a crime by city prosecutors because an escaped, convicted murderer with a long, documented history of trying to poison the city with mind altering drugs aired a pirate broadcast accusing them of... poisoning the city with mind altering drugs, along with some video that really proves nothing of the sort?

It's stupid enough that the general populace would believe it, but the police and prosecutors? I guess bribery could be the underlying factor, but the police weren't bribed until AFTER Dick decided to to turn himself in.

Barbara's reaction to Dick saying he'd turn himself in should have been "uh, for what, you haven't been charged with anything"

    It was a decent episode.

Dick/Barbara are still on track. Blackfire/Kon are....a thing sexually now though the writers are just ignoring that she's using someone elses body. Starfire is still single and has random visions that still make no sense.

It was nice that they kept Tims aspect of figuring out the Batfam identity but him going out so recklessly and almost dying...I wouldnt choose him to be a future Robin. I cant see Dick taking him in and forming him into Robin. Whenever Bruce returns and he has a new kid to look after....would be very Titans.

Is it really at all impressive, though, that he figured it out?

Is been a while since I watched season 2, so I've been watching this season under the impression that Batman and Nightwing's identities had become public knowledge. Everyone already seems to know them, or at least behave like they do. Dick is constantly with other Titans who the public clearly recognize when he is out of costume.

Not such a fan of this episode and nothing was particularly surprising. It still doesn't make sense that Jason has become so evil that he would kill Hank in the way he did.

Everyone seems to draw the line of "beyond redemption" at killing Hank.

He already murdered a like a dozen innocent, random civilians with the woman who he forced to bomb a building. There is no redemption from that, imo. He should never get out of a prison cell once he is caught, anything else is just spitting in the face of the orphans and widows of all those people.

  15. Wow. I knows characters acting stupid is just to be expected at some point in most series, but Jade just went over the top stupid with this nonsense. 🙄

I've read a lot of bad reviews far this series, but up until this point I've found it a decent show. Some ups and downs and lulls, but watchable. This episode its the first where I've really just been disappointed. Its hard to care about a character anymore after that kind of stupidity.

I was expecting Monica Rambeau and S.W.O.R.D. to take over from Damage Control in the end. But it seems more like the early Captain Mar-vell and Rick Jones switching places. Looking at the Captain's hand when she appeared it was like she was holding something, perhaps the other bangle

I was working with the theory that the 10 rings were a broken up bangle but now I think from a third dimension other than 616 or the Clandestine's home.

By showing the effect on plaster  is strange to do it that way though. I guess Tony Stark had more control over his repulser settings than a scared Damage Control agent. It is like from sheer blunt force trauma Captain America might not use a gun much but just his slamming into people would be lethal. We are just shown folks shaking it off. I guess it comes off the long cinematic history of hitting people in the skull with weapons but it only kills when the plot calls for a murder.

Lol, I always had a small issue w/  Claire and Foggy, both who were worried about Daredevil crossing the line and killing someone and insistent that he shouldn't, both clocking people in the head with baseball bats(defeated people on their knees both times, iirc), which would have a fairly significant chance of killing a person.

Yeah, I LIKED him on "Banshee". I saw him on some other thing with paintings or something, and he was less interesting there. I hate him on this, not because he's a bad actor, but because he's poorly cast, IMO. In order to believe what the show is serving up we the audience need to believe that our counterparts in the show's world would not see the same tightly-wound, borderline psychotic that Starr plays, and I, for one, just can't.  He's SUCH a cartoon character that it makes everyone around him seem idiotic that they don't see it.

I WAS surprised that they killed off Noir, but then, they can always put another actor in the suit. Maeve was barely there this season. I assumed that the actress had another gig, and the ending kind of confirmed that. And Soldier Boy's on ice until they need him again in a couple of seasons. Kind of boring, to be honest.  The only real death, other than Noir, was the politician in the pool, which gave Deep something to do. And I guess Victoria (did she have the same name as the character from Young and Restless in the comics?) Newman moves into the Veep gig, which leaves her spot at Vought open?

? Victoria doesn't have a spot at Vought, she's a congresswoman. She heads a committee on superhumans.

There are a couple directions that they could take the Cushings individually or as a couple.

Lana could struggle and/or grow as effectively a single mom who is trying to juggle the mayoralty with raising Sarah and Sophie with less availability from Kyle.

She could be willing to pursue new romantic interests. Hopefully not Clark, but that's a possibility. They have teased the notion that she is at least somewhat wistful that she went with Kyle instead of waiting for Clark. Tal-Rho could come back from Bizarro World and pursue Lana. Someone mentioned John Henry is also available, though I don't remember a single scene with the two of them together, so I have no idea about what the chemistry might be like between them. There could be new characters introduced as well.

Kyle can do some deep thinking about how he has made a mess of his life when he really didn't need to -- alcoholism, cheating on Lana, signing up with Morgan Edge, and get his act together. Or he can take a step down a more problematic path from occasional screwup to active bad guy. The fact that Kyle is not together with Lana is about the only justification for them not letting Kyle in on the Secret. But it is pretty inevitable that he will find out the Secret with both Lana and Sarah knowing it, and with the amount of danger the Cushings/Smallville find themselves in on the regular. So the question is how he will respond to finding that out.

There is also the notion of what Kyle will do if the separation persists. Will he start dating, perhaps the ex, perhaps the fellow firefighter who seemed into him (Tamara?) or someone else?

The problem is there are too many characters and relationships to service to devote all that much energy to ones that are purely Kent-adjacent.

Please, please, no with the Tal-Rho/Lana storyline. I really hope they don't go that way.

Kyle did a great job this year of transforming himself from a character that came across as an insufferable prick to a generally decent person and good father that struggled w/ substance abuse and made some horrible mistakes.

Now, I'm fine w/ Lana not being able go forgive and get past his infidelity, that is something that is difficult to overcome, and whether I've grown go like the character or not, Kyle is not entitled to forgiveness and reconciliation after what he did.

That being the case, don't tell me that Lana can't get past that but somehow she can get over Tal-Rho being a murderer that tried to destroy the world. Just no.

I agree it would be a terrible decision for TPTB to actually have Lana attempt to break up Lois and Clark. But it's not entirely beyond the realm of possibility that they will make such a terrible decision. And I do think it would be unrealistic that Lana doesn't at least muse about it.

I might be projecting, but I think most people wonder about first loves and high school crushes from time to time. Imagine you had two loves, a high school romance and the person you married. The person you married turned out for all his good qualities, to be an alcoholic cheater. The first love literally turned out to be the most admired and perfect person on the planet. It's improbable to me that you wouldn't from time to time wonder "What if...?"

Yes, but there is a big divide between wondering "what if" and actually pursuing a former love who is married w/ children to someone who appears to be your friend. The first is a totally human emotional thought, the second its just reprehensible.

I know it's not important to the main plotline(s), but it really bothers me that all 3 of these 15-year-olds (who are presumably freshmen in high school) have been given cars and are or will soon be driving them. I realize that Smallville is in a fairly rural area and that this may not be our world, but AFAIK no teen in the US can get a full license until at least 16. Some states do allow learner's permits or restricted licenses at a younger age, but kids generally are not allowed to drive without supervision until they get the full license.

Aside from whatever the law is, it is pretty irresponsible to give a 15-year-old a shiny new car (or even a shiny old car, as I think Sarah got) in light of the high accident rate of teenagers because of their inexperience and their tendency to use alcohol and drugs with friends (yes, even good kids do this at times). I was glad to see that Clark was letting the boys know that they may not be able to drive the cars right away, but you just know that prohibition will not last long.

The other thing that really bothered me, somewhat related to the plotline, was seeing Jonathan at the festivities with the same girlfriend. She's still a drug dealer, right? I never fully believed her sob story about having to deal drugs to help her father or family financially, but even if that's true I want him to be with someone more honest who will not use him.

For what its worth, and as someone that was very critical of the characters on Smallville driving too early (among other things), the kids are all sophomores. This was Jon's second season football at smallville. We aren't really given any seasonal markers or told when any of their birthdays are, but it must be at least partway through their sophomore year so they should be turning 16 sometime soon.

That said, I'm not big on "cool" uncle tal giving the boys trucks as "his way of apologising". For what, murdering people and trying to destroy the world? And Clark loves him now? Like most of these shows, the heroes are way too generous w/ forgiveness and redemption. There are people out there that have lost loved ones because of Tal, they deserve justice and he should be behind bars.

I'm thinking this is a low key callback to the Smallville pilot and Lex giving Clark a truck for saving his life. Maybe Superman has some degree of multiverse collective memory and vague recollection of his stick in the mud dad not letting him keep a truck as a thank you gift when he was young.

Ally and Ally in the same cell is the dumbest thing ever. They just combined to be a being that kicked Superman's ass. I get it was entirely for the scene, so they could have the conversation with Lois. But no rational reason for it.

Telling Chrissy? 🙄 People aren't entitled to this secret, even if they're friends. And I've never even got the vibe that Lois and Chrissy are really even friends. Partners, co-workers, " work friends " at best.

1-I refuse to believe him getting sick wasn't the catalyst for the season's forfeits/canceling. And it's clearly acknowledged his teammates knew he was using it.

And Lana is just the worst. I mean the WORST. She makes Googley schmoopy eyes at Clark when she's DATING Whitney (and that relationship is beyond squicky even when it premiered: a 14 year old Freshman dating an 17/18 year old senior-and how long had it been because they were already a couple and it was the first day of high school for her, Clark, Chloe, Pete; and the RIDONKULOUSNESS that the Pink Menace would be Homecoming Queen instead of a Junior or Senior)🤬🤬🤬🤬

    @BkWurm1

Not a junior or a senior, but a senior, period. That's how homecoming works. You have freshman attendant, A sophomore attendant, a junior attendant, and several senior attendants from which the king and queen are chosen from. Underclassmen aren't even eligible, just seniors. I know the will be someone chiming in w/ some random story about a tiny private school that doesn't follow these conventions, but at 99.9% if the high schools in this country, that is how it works.

But this isn't just an issue w/ Lana. The writers generally appeared to either not know or care how high school works most of time. Chloe is the editor the school paper from the first day of he freshman year, it appears. I don't care how into journalism she is, that is ridiculous. Pete and Chloe are both driving by the end of their freshman year(and based on Chloe's later tombstone, she was definitely too young). Clark and  Pete want to tryout from the football team... the week of the homecoming game? Two problems w/ that. 1. There is virtually NO high school in this country where you have to "try out" and make the football team. Football is a numbers game, if you want to be on the team you show up to workouts and practice, and they will take you, even if you are awful and will never touch the field in a game. They need practice bodies. 2. That said, you can't just show up the week of a game and join the team. The seasons started. The team has been practicing for at least a month, gone through summer camp/ 2 a day practices. You can't just join whenever you feel like it.

There's a list a mile long of this stuff.
