  1. I just read this. It was very good, and yes, many comparisons can be drawn to current situations and persons. If it could be kept civil, there are so many aspects of it that would make for an engrossing conversation. I've just started Reaching for the Stars by Jose Hernandez, who was a child migrant worker who became an astronaut and flew on the space shuttle. This is not a new book; it was published over a decade ago. But I watched the movie A Million Miles Away based on his life and decided to read the book. I requested it at the library about five months ago, but there is only one copy in my library system (which encompasses seven counties & over 50 libraries) and apparently a few others also watched the movie on Amazon Prime since there were more than a dozen holds on this 12-year-old book!
  2. The Lions also should have gone for the FG when it was 24-10. Always go for the points in the playoffs, especially on the road. Apparently the Lions didn't learn anything from the Packers last week. I thought it would be Goff who goffed things up, but instead it was Campbell.
  3. And I despised him in whatever uniform he wore and rooted against whatever team he was with. There's not many players I've ever felt that about; usually it's those whose personal behavior I find appalling (domestic violence, child abuse, etc.), not on the field conduct.
  4. Fellow Packers fan here - I've never had an issue with the Lions except for the years they employed that POS Ndamukong Suh. It's fun to watch a loyal fanbase finally seeing some success. Now if it was the Vikings or Bears you were rooting for, I'd suggest extensive therapy to determine just when your life went so wrong 🤣 🤣
  5. I wish more time had been given to Ruby Bridges.
  6. So many wonderful movies from Norman Jewison - how will TCM decide which to include in their tribute to him? I hope they include the episode of Private Screenings in which he was interviewed by Robert Osborne.
  7. Are you talking about his comment about saying he "just prays" when it comes time for a kick? Certainly that's what most Packers fans have done all season long! LaFleur did say in his opening remarks postgame, before being asked anything, that it's never one play, that people would look at the missed FG, but there were a lot of missed opportunities. I think his comment was directed more at Brian Gutekunst than Carlson, who chose not to keep Mason Crosby but go with the cheaper rookie. Carlson has not been consistent at all this season; he missed a kick (either a FG or PAT) in each of the past 5 games and 10 of the last 12 games. In Gutekunst's defense, the Packers weren't supposed to be contenders this year, it was to be a rebuilding year, so having a rookie kicker who struggles shouldn't have been issue. Until they surprised everyone by making the playoffs. Pro sports are cruel. An athlete is paid to perform. Carlson is paid to make the kick and he didn't. They will certainly bring in competition during training camp and if he continues to struggle, he will be gone. Just like players at every position with every team.
  8. Anders Carlson is probably relieved that for a few moments he isn't the kicker everyone is talking about.
  9. And they have the Christmas special every year, which PBS airs on Christmas night. I've watched Call the Midwife since the beginning and I've gotten two of my sisters hooked on it. I came to NCIS late as well - I think I binged the first 8 or 9 seasons and then became a regular viewer. I also came to Castle late. A friend loaned me the first 2 seasons on DVD when I was dealing with a health issue. I didn't start The Big Bang Theory and The Office until their third or fourth seasons.
  10. I have watched the Packers for well over 50 years; I've seen lousy teams, good teams, and a couple great teams, there's been heartbreak and happiness, and best of all, I have never had to experience an owner like Jerry Jones, David Tepper, or Daniel Snyder!
  11. I watch a lot of old-time TV on Prime/Freevee. Right now I'm watching Perry Mason and I recently went through the original Hawaii Five-O. I cannot believe that my preteen self thought Jack Lord was all that! In fairness, he's quite fine in the early seasons (very JFK-esque), but then suddenly he's in those 70s suits with the wide ties and he has those awful sideburns. Prime also has a lot of documentaries, which I enjoy.
  12. I'm also a Packers fan. It would be easier to deal with this loss if it had been by 2 or 3 TDs. I keep thinking that coming into week 1, if someone told me that the Pack would be one of the final eight teams playing, I would have taken that in a heartbeat. For Green Bay fans, there's lots of optimism about the offense and a ton of worry about the defense. One of the primary reasons they lost the game is the abysmal play of safeties Darnell Savage and Jonathan Owens. That's been a season-long thing. Once Carlson missed the field goal, I knew the game was lost because I had no doubt that San Fran would move right down the field for the TD.
  13. History geek here with some dates: the Germans invaded Norway and Denmark on April 9, 1940 and they attacked France and the Benelux countries a month later on May 10. That same day Churchill became Prime Minister. The retreat to Dunkirk and subsequent evacuation took place from late May until June 3/4. France surrendered to Germany the third week of June. The Battle of Britain, or the air battle, is viewed by most historians as beginning in July 1940 and going through May 1941. The night attacks, commonly known as the Blitz, were from early September 1940 through May 1941, and were directed at primarily civilian populations in London as well as other cities.
  14. I finally managed to watch the first two episodes. in the first, there was a trivial point that bothered me. Why would Siegfried think Mrs. Hall would hide his tobacco in an area he could access? And why did she do just that? Wouldn't she have kept in her bedroom, a room presumably Siegfried wouldn't enter? I had to google just when Easter in 1940 was since I know the end of the Phony War came in April when Norway and Denmark were invaded by Germany. Easter that year was on March 24, so the remarks about it not seeming like a war was happening or that it could all be over soon made sense. Instead in days it will be apparent that the war isn't going to end any time soon, James may be called away, and bringing a child into the world may not seem like the best decision. But it might not matter if James and Helen did "get cracking" immediately.
  15. I have learned from TV that if a loved one is ever in a prolonged state of unconsciousness in the hospital, all I need to do is lay my head on their bed, begin to weep, and voila! They will return to consciousness and either reach out and stroke my head or grip my hand.
  16. They kept their RBs too - AJ Dillon has been there since 2020 and Aaron Jones since 2017. It's a lot of fun to watch a healthy Aaron Jones with those young WRs and TEs and no-drama Jordan Love. I think the Packers have a chance this weekend (I always think they have a chance) but their run defense is lousy. I can see McCaffrey running wild against them. Combine him with Deebo and Kittle and the Packers offense will have to be perfect to keep pace. Plus I don't believe the 49ers will assume they just have to show up to win like Dallas did. But the Packers could lose by 3 TDs on Saturday and the overwhelming feeling among their fans will be optimism about the future.
  17. Vegas has canceled all bets on this because OF COURSE Rodgers will be interviewed and will say something about Love and the Packers because it has to be all about Aaron, all the time. He's realizing that it really is "Aaron who?" for Packer fans and he doesn't like that. We love no drama Jordan Love. I'm guessing Jerry is doing phone interviews with Belichik and Jim Harbaugh right now. He was probably telling his staff to set them up at halftime. The Packers have never lost at this stadium.
  18. I'd feel better if Campbell held on to that interception right in his hands. This defense causes my blood pressure issues. There's a whole lot of football to be played.
  19. As someone who has watched every Packer defensive play this year, let me just say there's a lot of football to be played yet. Dallas has the number one offense and the Pack's defense has made 3rd and 4th string QBs look like all-pros.
  20. Would love to se the Pack win but they probably lose by at least 2 scores. The Packers’ defense is not good and their special teams are not special and while the offense gives all Packer fans reason for optimism they are so young and prone to mistakes. Maybe McCarthy will give us hope with abysmal clock management & misuse of TOs. (Misty watercolor memories …)
  21. I expect nothing else from the NFL (or MLB or the NCAA etc.) but attempts to get more money from their fans. One thing that has always irked me is that when Packer games were on some provider other than NBC, FOX, CBS. They are shown on local tv to accommodate fans - except that the NFL deems the local markets for Packers games to be Green Bay and Milwaukee, rather than the entire state of Wisconsin. Those of us in the Madison market or the western part of the state cannot get the game without paying for whatever the premier service is. I have considered getting Peacock because several Wisconsin basketball games are being streamed on Peacock this season. But thus far I have refused to pony up the dough. In past years, I would watch almost every minute of every playoff game. But no more. I watched a movie last night and survived very nicely without being able to see the Chiefs/Dolphins game. I'm not sure this is the attitude that the NFL wants its diehard fans to adopt!
  22. I don't think the Ice Bowl is a fair comparison to more recent frigid games, because the players then didn't have anything near the equipment/gear they have now. Even the officials had to go to a local store in Green Bay before the game to buy long underwear, gloves, earmuffs. Forecasting the weather is better now too; the temperature was predicted to be about 5 degrees that day in 1967, but it was 20 degrees colder than that. While watching the Giants beat the Packers in 2008 I wondered why no one told Tom Coughlin about smearing his face with Vaseline. And I thought how old Favre looked. It was his last game as a Packer.
  23. They did it for Jamaal Williams and he thinks it is wonderful that his teammates did this for him. Here's what Williams said: "I appreciate my teammates for having my back and wanting to get me a touchdown to show the love to me. The reason it means so much to me is not because I scored and got a touchdown, but because my teammates wanted to get me a touchdown on the last play of what could be our last game. That right there shows me a lot about my teammates' character."
  24. I talk to myself all the time. I also find I talk to inanimate objects - just this morning, I had a conversation with a burned out light bulb I was trying to remove and it was being a bit stubborn about the procedure. I also say things out loud to remember them. Most frequently I will say "the door is closed" when I pull out of my driveway, otherwise I'll drive a block and think "Did I close the garage door?"
  25. What a world indeed. Aaron Rodgers says the Jets need to "flush the bullshit" in order to be competitive next season, that they need to eliminate distractions. He really cannot see that he was the ultimate distraction all season long. In these same comments with reporters, he declined to comment on what he said about Kimmel last week, because he's going to address it during his regular appearance with McAfee tomorrow. Look in the mirror, Aaron.
