  1. The laundry detergent is for Hetty’s sexual awakening, I’m betting.
  2. The Lenape themselves have a ten thousand year history, though whether they lived in the exact tiny corner of modern day Hudson River Valley that the show takes place is a bit of a question mark. But it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
  3. Thank goodness. The only thing that would make Sam look more like a Karen would be to throw a “look at how much of a Karen I’m not” press conference. I wonder if the Lenape cultural center that Bob works at is supposed to be the real life one that the show’s consultant founded. His name is Joe Baker and he recently gave a lecture at a museum near me (I also live on Lenape land). I wasn’t able to attend but I wish I could’ve.
  4. Currently, you do not need a Masters to teach in Pennsylvania. I’m in a teaching certification program, and it’s a Bachelors.
  5. The tree was dying and at risk of crashing into their shed, so I don’t understand why they didn’t point that out more after the protest happened. It was 500 years old and dead on the inside, as we saw. So whether it was June and Allie, or a thunderstorm, it was not long for this world and nothing was able to save it.
  6. I think they should’ve just told him this episode. It was easy enough to convince Bela, and it would definitely help Sam explain why she went so hard on contradicting him.
  7. One thing I was surprised by was how sexy Melissa’s Scarlet Witch costume was. Shockingly, Ashley’s take was more appropriate for a school day. My coworkers and I do themed costumes on Halloween. This year we’re going Toy Story. Also a Disney property.
  8. The rules are a bit iffy. Trevor’s shirt goes up and down with his movements, so he unwittingly flashes everyone when he lifts his arms. Thor can wield his sword, but if he lets go it will probably rematerialize in the scabbard. Sasappis pulled the eagle feather out of his hair, but when he handed it to Sam it appeared back in his hair. So yeah, I can see Nigel being able to prove that he’s the product of many generations of first cousin marriage by taking off his shoes, so long as he is still holding them.
  9. I liked how Sas was laughing that Thor and Isaac got her so good, but a séance is supposed to summon ghosts and that’s exactly what happened. So really they just gave her the desired end result. Hetty really does get the best lines. “I am being forced to spend time with someone whose company I do not enjoy,” while Sam is worrying about suffocating to death. Rebecca Wisocky’s facial expressions are incredible.
  10. To be fair, Alexis is in her late 30’s/early 40’s, and Lauren is pushing 60. Two different eras for women. I wish Lauren hadn’t messed up her face too, but I get why she did.
  11. The vault being impenetrable to ghosts means they interact with the material the same way livings do. The handle was made of a different material, so Alberta couldn’t turn it.
  12. Poor Jay with his “Sure do!” in such a cheerful tone when Allie asked if he realized how weird he was being. Bless him, they need to get my boy an actual friend. He’s so lonely! It’s also comfortable and doesn’t objectify Sam. Which according to Trevor misses the whole point of the holiday.
  13. I think she died there. She wasn’t necessarily buried there.
  14. I had a feeling Sas was lying when he said the tree had significance to the Lenape as a whole. I’m with Pete this time. I’ve always loved Sam and Jay together, but this week she left my guy in a tree and barely acknowledged it. You don’t deserve him, Sam.
  15. I’ve seen Dallas Goldtooth in a lot of stuff, and always thought he was a good-looking guy, but here? With the earrings? Hello! Giving my imaginary boyfriend Román a run for his money.
  16. Gregory teaching a small child self-regulation is literally his job though. The social-emotional aspect is by far and away the most important part of teaching, especially at that age. Ashley is a grown woman who should know how to act at a job. But I’ve also been a classroom aide for almost seven years—just outside Philly, as it happens—and I still haven’t broken $16/hour. So while I like to believe that I’m rather good at my job, by and large it doesn’t attract a ton of people who can afford to stay in the position for long, and the shortage is REAL. My coworkers who are assigned as 1:1 aides don’t even get benefits or paid time off. Barbara’s “That’s great, sweetheart,” to the little boy announcing that he’d pooped was awesome. Kids do share out everything going on with their bodies, and we do applaud them.
  17. If Sasappis has a flashback scene with Chiki I will die of euphoria and be forced to haunt my ugly apartment.
  18. Obsessed with Hetty’s sexual awakening and her prevailing fondness for men in the service industry.
  19. Okay, y’all, bear with me, I think I’ve got something on why our ghosts haven’t been sucked off. In Season 1, most of them had cathartic moments that indicated a resolution: Thor got a Viking funeral, Sasappis got to tell his story, Isaac came out, Hetty told Elias off and sent him to Hell, Alberta gained a new generation of fans, Pete reconnected with his family and forgave his wife, and Trevor got some true “bros” in Jay, Sam, and his fellow ghosts, who know the sweet person beneath the bro exterior. This season Flower got some closure with her brother. BUT… these are just the start of their new journeys on the road to finding peace/being able to move on. Thor, I suspect, will have to come to terms with why his crew left him behind, and I suspect he didn’t live up to ideals of Viking masculinity and he needs to come to terms with it. Sas seems like he was very optimistic in life, and he is holding on to a lot of bitterness from dying so young—never falling in love or telling his story—and he needs to let it go. Isaac and Hetty I think both just need time to enjoy a “life” on Earth unshackled by the expectations that made them so miserable in their respective lives. Alberta needs to embrace her worth as a person outside of being famous, which we saw her start to do in episode two. She also needs to embrace deeper connections with others, which we’ve seen her do all through the series. Flower needs to form a greater sense of identity, since in life she was so easily led around by the cult and the commune and hippy culture in general. Pete needs to connect with his own feelings, and not be such an inveterate people pleaser, which we saw him make strides with last season, thanks in no small part to Nancy. And finally, it’s been all but stated outright that Trevor wants true love. So in the long term, I think when those much deeper arcs are resolved (which will hopefully take many, many seasons) we will see our ghosts ascend.
  20. Teachers in Pennsylvania have certification in multiple grades, and often, a teacher can be reassigned to a different grade level every year. I’m in special education and we have students with IEPs, so they have individual goals and we work with them one on one or in small groups, but our classrooms are much smaller than a general ed class. For Melissa, it’s doable, though exhausting, but realistically only with a trained classroom aide to help her facilitate things, like having the aide monitor the third graders while Melissa teaches a second grade lesson, and then switching for the next subject. You're right, though, it is nuts. Especially since Melissa is almost definitely not getting a raise beyond a tiny COL increase, and the aide would make about $17 an hour possibly with benefits. Ah, American education.
  21. I grew up there. It has the congestion, badly maintained roads, and high taxes of the city, but also the homogeneous big box stores, chain restaurants, and necessity of having a car as the suburbs. I don’t recommend it. In fact, I remember driving past a hotel on the boulevard with my dad and seeing a hotel, and I asked why we needed a hotel, because why would anyone want to stay here?
  22. Sorry, I misread the initial question as just Philly. It’s not in the south, it’s in Center City, the downtown area.
  23. I think that’s what he thought he should’ve done, in hindsight.
