Could you tell what the heckler was saying?

Did anyone watch Roger’s match against Hurkacz? Did Roger run out of gas? Did it appear his movement just wasn’t up to it? I had noticed in previous matches that he was noticeably slower moving out to his forehand and assumed that was because of his knee(s).

I was too, which was such a bummer. I began to get angry when she was so defensive to Nina’s comment at the house. It was clear from that single moment that she had not yet been able to face the actual issue. She did NOT want to hear what Nina had to say. Sigh.

Oh, for f*&’s sake. What is wrong with people?!!!! (However, as a tennis fan from way back, I remember when Martina Navratilova and Amélie Mauresmo (both white) had the same shit spoken about them. How dare they have muscles and be built for power?!!!)

Oh, my Lord, I never imagined it would be something that bad. Thanks for the information. How much is he blamed by reasonable people for those deaths?

What's the story with Fong? (I watch the World Championships, Nationals and Olympics, but don’t follow things closely like individual coaches, unless they make the front page of the NYTimes, ahem.)

I didn’t get to see the match, but I was thinking that Roger is in a really tough situation psychologically versus excellent players like Mannarino, who are really good but not quite good enough to make the very top, and now have a better than realistic shot at beating ROGER FEDERER AT WIMBLEDON. It will likely be the biggest achievement of their careers and absolutely achievable given Roger’s weakened state. And there are a LOT of fantastic players in that category. Such a shame that Mannarino was injured and had to retire.

I don’t think choclatechip45 meant that they wanted to sue to get her a spot on the Olympic team. I think they were threatening to sue to allow Jade to attempt to qualify through the individual route. Feel free to correct me, choclatechip45.

Any episode with Father Hubley has my vote as a must-see.

I forgot to say how happy I am for Grace. And, yes, Laurie was fantastic. It’s so nice to hear a gymnast of either sex who doesn’t have a high, squeaky voice. She’s intelligent and articulate. Why do people think Skinner is likely to edge out Jade for the O’s vault finals? Don’t they do the same vaults, and doesn’t Jade have equal power but better form?

I love Francis, but does he HAVE to beat the one guy who had a shot against ND? Sigh. This season sucks. Am I forgetting someone who might have a chance? Maybe Medvedev? Zverev? Sigh. That fuc*&-er is going to win the effing Grand Slam, isn’t he? Also sad for Petra (my favorite in the ladies) but happy for Sloane. I don’t love Sloane’s personality, but I LOVE her beautiful, flowing game, and it would be so great to have her back at the top of the sport where her talent belongs. I totally forgot I still have a favorite in the ladies (equal to Petra): Coco!!!!!

Thank goodness, NBC isn’t covering Wimby, as Roger’s last Wimbledon match might have ended up on effing Peacock like his last Roland Garros match did. That’s awesome about Ash honoring Evonne. EG was one of my favorite players when I was a kid. So smooth, lovely and creative.

More thoughts: How likely is it that some of these athletes (particularly Suni) will be upping their difficulty between now and Tokyo? The competition to be the 2nd American in the All-Around could be brutal between Suni and Jordan. Who are the non-U.S. favorites in the team, All-Around and event finals this year? I saw that Mustafina retired recently. I concur completely about the nondescript music for floor. WTF is that about? Going back to the selection, wouldn't the strongest team mathematically have included Jade? And then adding Eakers or McCusker would have given the US a decent shot at another medal in the individual event finals? That would have prevented another gymnast from getting to have the Olympic experience, but it would have put the US in the best position to win the team (probably a lock anyway, but ...) as well as an extra event final medal (added to the three Simone is favored to win, the two Jade is favored to win, and the one Suni is favored to win.)

Random thoughts (mostly superficial): It was nice to see Leanne Wong looking somewhat relaxed and enjoying herself. The few times I’ve seen her compete I was worried that she was one of those kids who never, EVER let up on themselves. McKayla Skinner’s mom and sister should go to the same salon McKayla does. Those were some harsh dye-jobs. McKayla looked great, hair and make-up. I like her spunk and competitiveness. I don’t like her gymnastics. I REALLY don’t like that racist sh*&. Question: how does qualifying for the event finals at this Olympics work? Jade qualifying in that “special” way doesn’t give the US three spots on those events, does it? Because if it’s only the usual two per event, it will be very difficult for Skinner to make any of those finals. It seems that picking Skinner over, say, Eakers or possibly McCusker gives the US a chance at one fewer medal. Second question: if one of the four team members gets injured/Covid/whatever, can they choose from the event final specialists AND the alternates? Jade seems like a lovely, warm person. I loved that Simone wasn’t sporting the child-like bow on the top of the head tonight and thought the Heidi braids were very pretty on her. She has blossomed into a beautiful young woman. Now, given that she had her worst meet of the last ten years with this new look, she’ll probably go back to the silly bow for the O’s. Having such a bad night (by her standards) could help Simone psychologically in Tokyo. I LOVE Suni’s gymnastics, and I also think she seems like a lovely person. There’s something about her face and expressions that remind me of Naomi Osaka, whom I also love. There’s this stealth, deadpan humor that’s really charming and lovable.

Does anyone have any idea why Paul O’Neill is still broadcasting from his basement in Florida? I’ve wondered if it might be because he’s not vaccinated, but of course I have no actual information on that. I’m just curious.

TG has been handling figure skating respectfully, appreciatively, and immaculately with near perfect pronunciation for a few decades now. He is a blessing to have on gymnastics now.

Thank you so much for the info, shok. May I ask where you learned this? Did they mention it during the broadcast? I was so bummed at how the match was going I didn’t watch a lot of it.

Do you close Rafa watchers have information/theories about his skipping Wimbledon? I was dismayed how he seemed to run out of steam against Djokovic. And now this.

I'm quoting myself from about a year ago re my feelings about Djokovic: "My dislike started during his first prominent match at the US Open against Gael Monfis when both were fresh out of juniors, and Djoker pulled out ALL the gamesmanship stops, arguing, calling dubious injury timeouts etc. It was a repulsive display that smacked of desperation and duplicitousness (both of which he has continued to display in various forms since then) and got him off on the wrong foot with me. That plus his parents were/are terrifying." And that was the start. Repulsive. Desperate. Duplicitous. Plus other yucky stuff. That about sums it up. And I still find his parents disturbing, even more than other awful tennis parents. There’s a sense of underlying violence to them. (Hopefully I’ve got it totally wrong, but I haven’t been able to shake that feeling for 15 years.)

I gather you normally don’t care for ST? Is it that ND alchemy that magically turns you into a Stefanos fan?
-
Whoa. That’s serious. Are we to assume it’s because of serious accusations against her new partner? I certainly hope that’s the reason and not something more personal. I don’t know much about Massot and what kind of guy he is.
-
I am so bummed. ETA: I just can’t stand Djokovic. (Obvious.). This Roger fan was totally pulling for dear Rafa, Grand Slam record be damned.

A sad day for us fans of The Tennis Oldsters.

Come on, Coco!! I would love to see a Coco-Iga semi and then the winner versus Serena in the final. Also, so happy for Sloane to be playing so much better. She has such a beautiful game. I wonder if the horror she went through with her family and Covid and being stuck in the bubble in Australia ended up inspiring her?
