I wonder how they would get ID and a SS number, and an identity to start over in 1988.  They can't be who they are, and none of their ID's would be valid.  They wouldn't exist at all as far as the government is concerned, unless they were over 33 years old, and if they are, their younger selves exist in that timeline with their identity.  It's not like they can explain they are from 2021, fell down a sinkhole to 10kBC, and then climbed through another sinkhole to 1988.

Exactly! If they tried to explain what happened to them, people would think they were crazy. They would arrive in 1988 essentially homeless with no money, no friends, no family, no job. I suppose they could try to contact family members, but would those family members believe their story? After a while I suppose they could become rich from knowing future events. But I think it would still be a struggle, and if they know there are people who are trying to rescue them, and they have family they want to get back to, I don't think it's strange at all that they would choose to stay in 10,000BC.

  2. It also drove me crazy that Gavin was in such a hurry to jump down the sinkhole, that he didn't bother to get any supplies. They didn't say anything about the portal closing soon, so they should have just taken 5 minutes to gather a tent, sleeping bags, food, clothes, matches, a knife, weapons... from the surrounding area.

If Gavin, Ella/Lilly, and Izzy jumped into a sinkhole in the woods outside of Seattle, how did they land on the beach?

I was wondering that too. Sea levels were lower back then, so if anything, it would have made more sense for the 2021 sink hole to be by the ocean, and the 10,000 BC one to be in the woods. Maybe it's just confirmation that the portals can dump you out anywhere.

What happened to the other people who wanted to go through the light to go to 1988? The guy who lost his glasses and his partner?

There was a scene with them saying that they were staying.

I thought that CGI was pretty good on that wooly mammoth at the end! I see a lot of people calling it a mastodon, and it's a mammoth.

    Quote

TVLINE: CGI-wise, I imagine it would have been a lot cheaper to have one of those prehistoric birds fly overhead to confirm the era they landed in, instead of trotting out a woolly mammoth.

Creator/co-showrunner David Appelbaum: [Laughs] But everyone was waiting for that woolly mammoth, I think! That’s one of the most iconic animals of that time period, and we were really pleased with how that one came out.

I don’t understand the Girl Named Tom love.

I thought they sounded horrible last night with the Coldplay song. The guys sounded very off pitch when they were singing on their own. I thought the girl sounded good, until she had a really high note near the end.
I’m not really feeling any of the singers this season. Paris is my favorite. I think Jim and Sasha are the most improved.

As for poor Dawn, why would a freshly-decanted Dawn be any more "Pure" than the one he's replaceing?

Because the new Dawn was supposed to be a genetic copy of Cleon I, but then they found out that wasn't the case. Too bad for Dawn that they found out that info just a little too late. Is Demerzel going to want to kill Day and Dusk now, since they've both been genetically modified? I wonder if we'll ever find out, due to the time jump in season 2. There are definitely a few of characters I am going to miss.

I really enjoyed season 1. I went into it knowing nothing about the source material, so I had no expectations.

After one watch, the trailer doesn't do much for me.

I thought it was a bit underwhelming, I think because we don't really learn anything new. We already knew that Boba was taking over Jabba's business. I think most of the scenes are from the first episode, so I'm not going to judge it too harshly.

Another nitpick: Does the moon of Not Arrakis have an ocean? A deslaination system won't be useful if there is nothing to desalinate!

Maybe there are a lot of underground sources and wells, but they’re all contaminated with salt?

One thing I forgot to mention in my first post is that I didn’t realize that the personal force fields the Brothers wear is just a bracelet that can be removed. Makes me wonder if Dawn was really trying to kill himself, or maybe he was just so distraught that he forgot to take it off, or didn’t think it would be able to protect him from that great a fall.

But this article says you have to pay to use the PBS app, or pay for the channel on Amazon Prime.  I guess their app has gone the way of a pay service like a premium channel?

I think some shows you can still watch for free, but you have to pay for the app to stream the Masterpiece shows. I wanted to watch Jamestown, which Stuart Martin was in, but only the first episode was free. I’m going to see if my library has it. PBS re-aired Miss Scarlet and the Duke a few months ago, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they re-air it again in a few months.

  8. As a layperson who does not study math and science, I really don’t care that the show doesn’t follow real world scenarios. All the math equations just seem like your typical, made up for Hollywood stuff. It’s science fiction and is filled with things that could probably never happen. I would assume most people watching are not educated in the complex theories the show is trying to portray. But I can see how it could be frustrating for people who are!

I’m still more interested in the Brothers. The ledge scene with Brother Dawn and the gardener really had me worried. We didn’t see them getting off the ledge, but I’m assuming they’re fine. For now. 😬 I’m guessing Dawn spilled the beans to the concubine, who then told everything to Dusk. That was a pretty mean trick.

I suppose the escape pod is like the door from Titanic. It couldn’t hold two people because of Plot!

  9. The Terminus storyline seems to be dragging a bit, so I'm enjoying the empire storyline much more, especially now that the Brothers don't all seem to be on the same page. I especially liked seeing the deviations that Day is showing, like grabbing the wine with his left hand. He must be truly miserable if he tried to kill himself. That scene actually reminded me of Rapunzel, stuck up in her tower, locked away from the real world. He was afraid the botanist girl would tell someone about his suicide attempt, so he spoke to the army guy to see how the issue could be handled. I also feared for her life when he walked by, but just because she wasn't killed then, doesn't mean she won't be in the future. I just don't see a happy ending there.

I think it’s supposed to be a love story. Not exactly coming across that way though. The writers are probably scrambling now after reading all the comments about it. 😄

I was a little surprised reading the creepy/stalking comments here, because to me it comes off as a love story. It's not like he was spying on her in her bedroom, which definitely would have given me a different viewpoint of what they were trying to portray. I do understand why people are seeing it differently than me, though. I also imagined that perhaps Dawn has used the dragonfly drone to watch other areas of the kingdom as well, since he's probably not allowed to interact much with other people. I think Dawn is around 18 and has never had any kind of real interaction with a girl/woman before, and is experiencing a crush for the first time. She seems to like him as well. But like I said before, there's no way I see Dawn's story having a happy ending. I would think any real attachments would be considered too dangerous, because they could affect the dynasty. If Day finds out, I can see him putting a stop to it right away.

Also, on a shallow note, I appreciated Day's scene with the prostitute. 😁  I've never really found Lee Pace to be that attractive before, but I think he is here. I was little confused about his protective forcefield. She couldn't touch him at first, but then could, once she went more slow. But then he was able to be more forceful when he was on top, and didn't seem to have a problem touching her.

I also think Lee and the actor who plays Brother Dusk have done a great job showing slight differences in their clones throughout the timeline. Like Day seems to be getting more tyrannical, while Dusk seems more benevolent.

I read somewhere, either an article or an interview with the author, that she could not waitress because the money making shifts are at night and most government-funded day cares only operate during normal business hours.

It was mentioned in the article at the bottom of my post, that I said answered some of my questions, like the job question...

"she began cleaning houses and sought government assistance because she wasn't able to resume work in the restaurant industry while seeking daycare for Story, since most facilities are only open during daytime hours on weekdays."

The show is very eye opening for people like me, who have never had to experience anything like Alex had to. Things aren't as easy or as cut and dry as you might think. Like when I wondered why she didn't just wait until Sean went to work to leave him, because then she could have taken some of her belongings with her. I realized I've never experienced anything like that, so I don't know what goes through the mind of a scared, abused woman.

ETA: The O'Doul's beer that he asked for is supposed to be non-alcoholic.  Sean wasn't drinking O'Douls when her Dad wasn't there.

Thanks, I didn't catch that! I don't drink beer, so I just figured he had also started drinking, which is why Alex was slipping further down the hole. I think it makes him being non-supportive of his daughter even more crappy, since he was apparently clean and sober but still hurting Alex by just standing by while she continued to be abused.

My jaw dropped when he accepted a beer from Sean.

I just figured it meant that he had fallen off the wagon, just like Sean had. They seemed to have been supporting each other in their sobriety, so I think once Sean started to drink, maybe the father did too. I do think it's sad that he sided with Sean, but he sees himself in Sean, so it makes sense.

I laughed when Alex flashed back and was pounding her head on the mic for not pursuing the cute (much cuter than Sean, IMO) engineer at the same time she met Sean.

I thought she was pounding her head because she didn't want to listen to him drone on about his boring job, just like when she first met him at the bar. She wasn't interested in him, and was just being polite. I don't think she was ever really interested in Nate, and I think the cowboy fantasies she was having was more about seeing him as a savior. I didn't understand what Nate saw in Alex. Nate seems to have so much going for him, I honestly think he could do so much better, so I was confused why he was pursuing her so hard.

Although I definitely felt bad for Alex, like another poster mentioned, it was hard watching her make, what I considered to be, poor choices. I wondered why she didn't try to find a better job. She was a waitress before, and I would think that with tips, she could make more money, and wouldn't have to buy her own supplies. Also, sometimes Alex seemed to be very strong willed, and other times, she let people walk over her, like letting her coworkers steal her supplies and not do their fair share of the work.

I also questioned her decision to get a huge student loan and go to college for creative writing. Hopefully she can get a job at a magazine or newspaper after graduating.

ETA: Because some of the story is based on real-life events, this article answers some of the questions I had! I love that all the My Little Ponies was a real thing that happened!

I don't want to disregard what @pennben has brought forward regarding the imbalance of power issue, but from what we see both Sam and Rebecca are genuine in their feelings - there's no coercion, no abuse.

This is why I don't really have an issue with the relationship. They were in a relationship together before knowing who they were talking to, so there was no coercion. They both seem to be level-headed adults and I can't see Rebecca being vindictive or Sam feeling pressured to keep the relationship going because Rebecca is his boss. When Rebecca told him she didn't want him to leave, she wasn't talking as the  owner, and I think Sam knows that. She would have said the same thing if she wasn't his boss. I'm not denying that it might get messy or  look bad to outsiders. Maybe it's a bad idea, but it also seems stupid to deny yourself love just because of what others might think or because it might end badly.

Juno is so beautiful, why did they make her hair look like that in the scene with the conversation with Roy. She looked like she had hair plugs or a bad wig on.

Her hair is so curly in real life, I don't think it ever looks good when they straighten it. But I agree it looked especially bad in that scene. Yet Roy still said she looked 'cool as f*ck', or something like that. :)

Um, tampons and vigilance. And liners can be attached to jeans or slacks as well. Not saying I think this is a good idea, but it can be done.

I never said I didn’t know how you would do it, I just meant for me all of the alternatives would be horrible. I don’t think I would ever share with the world, especially my coworkers, that I don’t wear underwear! I suppose a lot of the things the hustler has to share are things that might be considered too private for some people or open them up to scrutiny. I think you’ve got to be pretty thick skinned to be the hustler. I definitely couldn’t do it!

Only watched the second episode last night, but I got the Hustler pegged fairly early... he was super aggressive with the answers and with trying to deflect suspicion to the other contestants. Sorry, dude, (almost) no one remembers that much random trivia just from watching TV.

Yea, that’s why I honed in on him from the beginning. He answered too many questions correctly and always had a reason for why he knew them. Also, I just thought he matched a lot of the clues, especially the Goo Goo Dolls one. lol And having the cane by his side seemed way too obvious. A production assistant could just bring it over to him when he needed it. It was there so people could see it.

I initially thought Jen (blond woman) was the hustler. But the not wearing underwear since age 18 threw me. I can't be the only one who thought, wait, how does a woman go through monthly periods without underwear?

You were not the only one who thought that! Not being able to use just a liner on light days would be horrible IMO, so that clue really threw me. Although it’s possible she doesn’t get periods. I did suspect her a bit when she mentioned that she made her dress, because I can see an artsy/crafty person color coding their phone apps.

The only thing I got from this episode is that Delilah has grown tired of servicing Masha. She has forbidden Yao from resuming his sexual duties, therefore, sis is ready to go.

Hmm, I didn't get that impression at all. Throughout the show, Delilah has shown concern over Masha increasing the doses too quickly, and doesn't want another patient to die. That's why she's headed to the police. I kept expecting something bad to happen to her while she was driving away. But I guess the ominous music was for Carmel.

Was there a scene where Carmel was dancing to Xanadu one minute, and then put a white colored contact lens in her eye in the next minute?

I thought she took her contact out, to reveal the white eye. So she dressed up as a man, and shot Masha in the parking garage because Masha was having an affair with her husband? Didn't really see that coming! Since she has the hidden phone, I guess we are to assume she was the one sending the threatening texts to Masha. I hope Masha doesn't die, taking Carmel's secret with her. Carmel needs some serious help.

but a guy who poses nude would have no problem doing that on national tv. Having lived through five years of life model drawing/painting classes (college), he seemed to fit that category too, both in age and physique.

I went to art school, but only had to take one semester of life drawing, and we mostly had middle aged models. So the model question didn't really clue me in at all. Also, I think it's odd how some contestants assume that a person has to have kids in order to enjoy "childish" things, like The Little Mermaid.

  21. I only guessed the hustler right at the end when he lifted up his shirt. Just something about that act made me think it was him. I feel like he got spoken over a lot, which could be why he didn’t have a chance to steer the answers in the right direction. I found this group, except for the hustler, to be very loud and obnoxious. If you’re not the hustler, I don’t understand the strategy of talking so much during the questions. If you don’t know the answer, shut up and let others answer! lol

I saw the part asking for contestants for season 3, so I’m glad the show will be continuing, although I don’t know what the ratings have been like.

And then the dog screamed and Daryl yelled "No!" and I thought the guy he was fighting went over a cliff with the dog.

To me it just looked like the guy grabbed Dog and threw him, which caused Daryl to yell. I thought Dog was dead, until he showed up later. I thought it was dumb that it took Dog forever to start attacking the guy, and then once he did, Daryl just sat on his ass and watched, instead of getting up and killing the guy. I also don't know why the Reapers are following Pope. Sure, they bonded in Afghanistan, but you'd think by now, after seeing his level of crazy, they would have chosen a new leader. Also, they have yet to explain whey they just go around  sneaking up on people and killing them.

I also hate when the show only focuses on just one group per episode. Maybe it's easier to write an episode that way, but it's a lot less exciting for the viewer, and harder to follow/remember what's happening with the other groups.
