  1. Grew up in the south in the 70's and 80's.  Said the pledge and sang the star spangled banner every day in elementary school.  We were specifically taught not to put your hand over your heart during the anthem.  I only knew it was a thing when they used it to question Barack Obama's patriotism.  IMO, it is the result of petty people with petty issues to feel superior over.

  2. I don't know how I missed that Le Clos was the fool who called Michael out at worlds and, when Michael that same day at another meet swam a faster time, tried to argue it shouldn't count because Le Clos wasn't swimming against him.  (Who in the world believes that swimming against the elite flyers would have made Phelps swim slower?!?)  Then Le Clos' dad joined the mix, arguing that Michael's times don't matter because Chad will always beat him.  I am very much of the mindset that you act like you've won before, but I don't have a problem with Michael in this instance telling Le Clos to look at the scoreboard, look at the stadium, and choose a seat.

  3. My sister bought the total red/white/blue channel package back in the 1990's and LOVED it!  I was working, and she called me throughout the day to update me on stuff.  I was so bummed that it was a critical and commercial flop because it was the perfect way to watch the Olympics.  My boys are loving the NBC sports app and have been talking about handball and fencing and other, more obscure Olympic sports.  They are finding a lot on the television as well.  I just don't have the time to research when/how to watch my favorite stuff live so accept the primetime coverage for what it is.

  4. At first I didn't think much about Le Clos' antics, but then he continued it with this smirk that suggested to me he knew exactly what he was doing.  I think Rowdy at one point used the phrase "milking it" and I assumed that was exactly what it was-get in the camera frame and do stuff that gets the press talking about how you beat him once and hope it rattles Phelps.  Phelps all but eye-rolled when asked about it and said essentially everyone has their own way of getting ready.  Le Clos' way was stupid and didn't work if the semi final results are considered.

I hate Le Clos now just for giving the media a new something shiny to focus on instead of reporting the events.

  5. My sister was a great gymnast through college, and she never allowed my mom to watch her compete.  She said she couldn't concentrate if she thought mom was cowering in the stands.  My dad drove her everywhere.

I am always amazed at the parents/loved ones who make such a spectacle of themselves in the stands.  How can you think that helps your athlete in any way?

  6. I like the new roommate.

I am confused by all these clients who are now suing.  They usually won and probably were on contingent few schedules so it doesn't matter who did what come payment time.  Are they arguing over-billing?  What's the claim?

  7. I feel your pain, stillshimpy, and completely agree.  We had an author call in to a book club meeting once years ago.  I had not particularly liked the book and had earlier mentioned my big problem with it.  When there was a lull in the conversation, because the book didn't merit much discussion, someone in the group told the author I had an issue with it and asked me to elaborate.  I was mortified!  We had also signed up to hear the author of Eligible.  I canceled as soon as I realized how bad the book was because I could picture it happening again.  Even when I hate the book I can appreciate the work in creating it and the courage in putting it out there for critiques.

Steph comparing his camp to his brother's is laughable- the free camp is for a day vs 5. I'm sure other players charge for camp, but make it affordable for others.

Nope, his brother charged for his camp, too - I think @$250.

I imagine Candy pays the school tuition directly to the school. Would TorDean be taxed on that?

Gifts are not included in income.  At least not when I was an estate planning attorney, fifteen years ago.  And, yes, Candy would pay that money directly to the school so that it wouldn't be counted against the amount she is allowed to give away tax-free each year.  Also so that Tori and Dean couldn't spend it on Party City crap for their pet lizard's birthday.

  10. We know Christine had a difficult relationship with her mother (did we ever get details?), and her mother died before they could reconcile.  I remember her urging the sergeant to reconcile with his son and telling him she would give anything to be able to fix things with her mom; I am not surprised she wants the same for Mary Beth.

  11. It was a great streak, but I don't mind the Tribe losing.   The last thing I wanted to happen was for them to start playing tight because they got wrapped up in keeping the streak alive.  Now they can just start a new streak.  Anyway, we Clevelanders have already seen what happens when a team gets too wrapped up in a regular season record!

  12. Other than Reshma's lullaby at the beginning, which was gorgeous, hubby was horrified to hear singing and fast forwarded through all the dance numbers.  My favorite part was Evan's reaction to Paige's news.  The way he wanted to keep it quiet and then turned and screamed the news to his brother was perfectly in character as well as adorable.  I know they are fictional, but I am so happy for them.

I thought Evan's toast was good.  Not a flat out forgiveness, but a thawing and hope for the future.  Eddie drives me insane so I don't really care about his happy ending.  Where was Emma?

  13. If I were Barney, I would have a lot of fun today after striking out Napoli.  There should be a lot of chatter on the bases today!
