Another jersey toss in Edmonton. Who are these people with so much money that they can afford to ditch a perfectly good hockey jersey? I've had the same Canucks jersey since 2001 (which means they've been through about 10 different jerseys since then) but I still haven't gotten rid of it. Not even in 2011 when setting it on fire was apparently the thing to do. /kidding

I guess this an unpopular opinion, but I still don't care for the time jump. Yes, it would have been difficult for Claire and Brianna to survive in post-Culloden Scotland. But it's a work of fiction and Gabaldon could have come up with something if she wanted to. It always seemed to me that Gabaldon wanted to go from one big historical event to the next and she had no idea what to do with Jamie and Claire between Culloden and revolutionary America. And it still took way too many books to get to the American Revolution. I feel like the quality of the books really declined after the second one and the time jump played a big part in that. As for the strapping scene, I don't want to get into that again but I will say I don't have any plans to be anywhere near the internet after that episode airs. It's not going to be pretty and I'm not exactly the poster child for calm and unemotional.

The only thing that would make sense to me is if the timeline is altered. Maybe in the show the choice happens after/at Lallybroach. Otherwise Claire choosing Jamie so soon makes very little sense.

I'm with Kariyaki. Some of the best shows that have been on television have never won awards because they are on the wrong network or they are genre shows. If I don't even care about the Emmys, I'm definitely not caring about the people's choice awards.

I've never gone looking for Outlander fanfic, but just because DG hates it doesn't mean it isn't out there somewhere.

Show Rupert is definitely my favorite as well, but agree that they should all die during Culloden (or the lead up to it). I don't mind deviating from the book to an extent, but that would feel like a betrayal of history. Culloden wouldn't seem like a devastating historical event if all the main characters miraculous survive. Jamie manages to save Lallybroach (and Ian, Jenny, Claire and Brianna). Besides, what would they even do with them after that? It wasn't exactly good times in the days after Culloden, so even if they survived the battle they would have been imprisoned/died of starvation. Plus, there is really no place for them in the story with all the other characters roaming around. Voyager is pretty heavy plotwise, but the subsequent books are pretty heavy character wise. I personally found the Red Wedding pretty heart-breaking. I knew there would be consequences after Robb broke his oath and married Thalia (who I hated) but I wasn't expecting THAT. Cat and Ned were my favorites and Ned had already died. Plus, Robb's dumb behavior was not Cat's fault! I was not expecting Cat to get killed off too. And Robb was too pretty to die! I knew Thalia was a goner as soon as she talked about being pregnant and naming the baby Ned. Sorry. I would have brought this over to the Outlander vs. other shows thread but couldn't because of book spoilers.

Well, I guess we should have been careful what we wished for because now Rogers owns EVERYTHING. I know they are still calling it Hockey Night in Canada but it just doesn't feel the same. I miss Kelly Hrudey, John Shorthouse getting to call national games, and After Hours. And I'm really going to miss those playoff montages that the CBC used to do. And of course I miss the Hockey Night in Canada song but that hasn't been on the CBC for awhile. With TSN owning the rights to the song, when are we going to get to hear it? During the World Junior tournament? GAH. Why does Rogers have to ruin everything? Considering the way the Oilers have started the season, you might be up against some stiff competition. Apparently, they want Connor McDavid BAD. I don't understand how a team with that many high ranking draft picks that many years in a row can still be that bad. They got Eberle, RNH, Yakupov and Taylor Hall and they are still this bad? Since you asked so nicely, I am perfectly willing to share. That goal he scored last night was amazing, wasn't it? I really, really love whenever the Habs humiliate the Bruins because I hate them SO MUCH. And as an added bonus you can always count on Milan Lucic to lose his mind and do something unbelievably tool-ish. The only way I could get on board with another team in Ontario is if they came out of the gate and were immediately better than the Leafs. That would make me laugh so hard because I am a terrible person.

I think that's standard in Asia as well. I know all of the HBO shows are subtitled. I'm not sure if Outlander is airing over here. I was fortunate to still have a credit card with a Canadian billing address so I bought it off iTunes. I think Canada might be the only country where purchasing the show on iTunes is a possibility. I guess it has something to do with the rights. This is also why it drives me crazy when English speakers claim they don't watch foreign films because it's too hard to read subtitles. The rest of the world seems to manage just fine. Am I the only on who is also counting down to the return of Claire? She's my girl! ETA: Forgot to mention earlier, but I think this show would do really well in North East Asia. Historical epics are extremely popular.

Yes! It wasn't a lot of fun to hear Jamie and Ian talking about Brianna's lack of virginity but it has totally historically accurate. I felt the same way in the scenes where Jamie and Claire discuss abortion. It Jamie had started on about the importance of a woman being in control of her sexuality and reproductive choices I would have thrown the book against the wall. I think Jamie is pretty progressive for his time actually. And yes I am probably blinded by my love of the character. I ranted about the rape thing on the other thread so I won't say too much other than I was okay with it happening once. It is a thing that unfortunately happens and if handled correctly I am okay with reading about. It's not enjoyable but I am okay with it happening once in the course of a book series. But when you go back there again and again it is really too much.

Yep. This is exactly what I think happened and why I compared her to GRRM. Even though the series are in different genres I think they suffer from the same problem. Early works were great but then became so popular that there was either no editing or editors who were yes men/women. As a result the books became so bloated as more characters got added and there was no narrative or description that the author didn't think we needed to read about. Editing is important. I didn't even even watch Lost but I was thinking that exact thing when I was typing that last paragraph. Lost, How I Met your Mother and Battlestar Galactica. Battlestar Galactica was the show I was most invested in and the tagline was AND THEY HAVE A PLAN. However, by the last season it was obvious that Ron Moore and the other BSG writers had no plan to speak of. I really hope that Gabaldon does and it isn't a dream/hallucination, Claire or Jamie dying, or anyone turning into a mystical pigeon. ETA: LOL @ The Great Dismal Swamp.

I just want to co-sign everything Kiwi just said about this book. I agree with everything you said 100%. I'm also at the same should I continue this series or not place as you, but I talked about that on another thread because I am spoiled up the wazoo. Realistically, I know I should have more compassion for a rape victim and I kind of hate myself for not being on Brianna's side more, but by the end of the book I pretty much couldn't stand her. I like Roger but not enough to really be invested in their relationship/family.

I enjoy trolling other teams but I would probably save it for Leafs fans. As much as I love the game, I have never been in a fantasy league which is kind of strange. I think a lot of things account for the Habs being more popular than the Leafs right now. I'm from western Canada and the Toronto-centric bias of CBC really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The Habs are also a much more exciting, dynamic team right now with Price and Subban leading the way. I have a deep, deep love for PK Subban and the haters can come right at me. I love watching him play and I love watching him in interviews. You are the front runners in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes. So at least there's that. That Canucks-Oilers game was something else. Not really a great game for either team. (Defense? What defense? You mean you aren't supposed to let the other team just skate into the slot? Who knew?). The goaltending for the Canucks was also pretty bad. That being said it was one of the most entertaining things I've ever watched. Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Dan Hamhuis FOUGHT. There were 8 goals and tons of powerplays. Two guys getting their first NHL goals. The Sedins looking years younger. True love. Electric eels. That game really had it all and I'm sorry for anyone who missed it. ETA: The last great Leafs superstar was definitely Mats Sundin. Before that I don't know. I would say Curtis Joseph or Doug Gilmour before I would say Domi, who was pretty much just a sandpaper guy IMHO.

I understand why the story got bigger because 8 books of Jamie/Claire all from the first person POV is too much. But then, that's what I liked about the series so I just wish it had been wrapped up in 3 or 4 books. I like most of the supporting characters, but not as leads. I'm never going to be particularly invested in Bree/Roger and what goes on with them. I don't know much about Willie at this point and I do like Ian but I'm not sure that's enough. Ian can't carry a book for me. I am definitely not interested in more rapes. I'm not sure why that keeps popping up. I see people on the show threads complaining about all the sexual assault and we haven't even gotten to the rapes and I can't believe I actually typed that sentence. Just, way too much rape. I also do not want to read about Claire/Lord John. Just . . . no. I'm trying to figure out what I might like about the last 4 and I'm not coming up with a lot. I'm also wondering if this series will ever end. If Diana Gabaldon would promise that the next book would be the end that would be one thing. But I feel like this will be going on five books later. No wonder she's friends with GRRM.

I just finished the fourth book and I'm not sure I want to continue. I remember the fifth book being incredibly boring. And then there's the spoilers I've read for books 6-8. Yikes. Is anyone a fan of those books?

Athena, Carey Price is always a good bet. So is PK Subban. I believe there was a study this year that proved the Habs are more popular nation wide than the Leafs. If I was in a fantasy league I would be confident in either of those players. I know it was a game against the Calgary Flames, but how good did the Sedin line look during that game? Hamhuis, Tanev, Kassian and Vey also looked good. OTOH, it's time for certain players to stop turning over the puck. Yes, I mean you Alex Edler. We already have one Sbisa and we don't need another.

I agree with Tif. She is way more subtle which IMHO is a good thing. Some of those other actresses really needed to tone it down. I guess I'm less worried about the Roger casting. He is (again in my opinion) a much more likeable character. Just find someone attractive who is at least a decent actor and it should be fine.

I think the casting for Brianna is really important. She seems to be a character that a lot of people dislike. Getting a really likable (and talented) actress might go a long way towards winning people over. Look at the number of people who disliked book Frank but are enjoying TV Frank. Part of it is the writing, but I think having Tobias Menzies in the part has a lot to do with. And I agree that the first actress was pretty terrible. I think the casting on this show has been great so far and am confident they will find the right actress.

Yeah, and I love show Rupert way more than book Rupert. Also, I think Murtaugh's death was really hard on Jamie. He was such a constant in Jamie's life and one of the few people Jamie really trusted.

I guess I don't really see it in the same light. It was a real historical event, so if all the characters magically survived that would have bugged me. The red wedding was so effective because it was shocking. I'm not saying Culloden won't be incredibly devastating, but it won't really be a surprise, either. I also think this is the type of storytelling Ron Moore excels at, so I can really see him hitting this stuff out of the park.

I'm Canadian and I've spent almost every Saturday of my life from October to June watching Hockey Night in Canada. Once next week rolls around I think I'll be alright.
