Meta wise, Dean's love of food comes from Jensen's acting choice to snag free food (weenies on a stick) while pretending to console the bereaved in Nightmares. They kept the running gag of 'opportunistic' eater for a while but it took on a darker subtext (in-universe) when we found out repeatedly that Dean knows hunger as a child and Sam does not. Evidence: Converation regarding hunger in Metamorphosis, Dean feeding Sam as a child, Dean stealing food as a basis of his time on the farm with Sunny in Bad Boys. Then add the connection of pie=Mom love. So what started out as opportunistic turned kind of sad in later years. Dean has always enjoyed food, sex, sleeping. To me it reflects a life of sometimes depravation and he truly sabots it when he can get it.

Oy, what are they going to do now?

I'm also glad they gave up the "came back wrong" angle. Because then Sam loses a lot of agency. And he barely has any to begin with. I'm not happy with his S4 choices but at least they felt like a dark place a grieving Sam could get to. Not a mind-whammy from his resurrection.

It's like I don't even know you anymore! (j/k) Sigh. I sooooo loved Reading Is Fundamental. First of all, it gave us one of the BEST running gags of all time: Kevin Tran, Advanced Placement. And the lines! "So now we're kidnappers?" Meg: "Not if we shut up about it." (I use this in life ...as a joke..all the time). "Pull my finger". AND HE DOES. And then we get the awesome Team Free Will hug! Personally I loved "out-there" Cas. Talking about the unhappy dogs in Perth. But for me, the complex scene of playing "Sorry" and the inability for Dean and Cas to communicate was really meaty stuff. I don't like a lot of Ben Edlund scripts but I loved his eclectic sense of humor and elliptical writing in this one. It was angsty and funny and exciting all at once. *sigh* You will be missed by me, you adorable little episode you (nose bop). I feel a need for a hug: Also, it's time, like "RIGHT FRIGGING NOW!" to say goodbye to "Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie". Sam was 6 kinds of adorable in this episode. The way he sidesteps the clown before chasing after the 'shroom dude (lion costume). A really BAD bad cop. His repeating of "if it bleed you can kill it". Only to find out that they didn't bleed (except glitter). Dean REALLY wanting that slinky and Sam inherently knowing it and picking it up. Dean's sincere apology for causing the childhood trauma in the first place. Dean's love of Shark Week. It was a light-hearted episode with some really great monsters (Octovamp/Dractopus, Seabiscuit the Impaler, Landshark).
