I wondered what the hell kind of injections she was getting in her friend's apartment that also had the, what the hell was it? A sensory deprivation bed or something?

Wasn't it some B12 thing? Basically the "hangover shot"? And I think it was some kind of bizarre inflatable hyperbaric chamber - and I just googled that shit and you can totally just buy one for home use. I also found one that you can buy specifically for pets - although apparently the home use one can fit two like a slumber party.

Don't hold me to it, but I think it was glutathione? It did begin with a "G" so I think that's what it was. I looked it up and Wikipedia describes it as an "antioxidant" (OF COURSE) and also something that people apparently do via IV to lighten their skin tone despite absolutely no medical evidence to suggest it works.

I just want to know how her friend got a hold of that shit and why Star would be a-ok with some rando giving her injections but not an actual medical doctor doling out advice.

I googled THAT just now (WHY are you leading me down these rabbit holes??) and apparently you get a vial online for about $150. So apparently literally anyone can buy it. And of course it does ALL of this, so why NOT allow non-medical professionals INJECT it into you?

"A very powerful anti-oxidant whose benefits include its ability to fight free radical damage caused by stress, injury, infections, environmental factors, demanding workouts, or even a demanding schedule. It also improves visions health, prevents aging, strengthens the immune system, improves mental focus, prevents alcoholism, increases energy levels and detoxifies the liver."

The better question is, with all of these amazing benefits, why aren't we all just injecting it right left? Oh maybe because our bodies already produce it naturally.

You know what would actually "detoxify" a liver? Not drinking, Star! Maybe she thinks by injecting that crap she'll have room for more alcohol?

And MAN! I can't believe that regular folks can just go on the internet and buy this stuff. I also can't believe the idiots on this show who'll willingly take it.

Yeah, right. That's all woo woo double talk right there. I'm surprised they didn't include "purifies the blood" and "balances the humours". Sheesh. I've studied herbal medicine in a very casual way, and lots of herbals are loaded with stuff like this. the Doctrine of Signatures (where you look at a plant and what it looks like tells you its use--like anything yellow is good for urinary ailments, and so on). WHY do people want to practice medicine like some sort of medieval serf? People died from common ailments back then! Why hang your hat on some quack herbal/alternative/new age "cure"?  I suppose the argument could be made that these people are desperate for answers and help, so they'll try anything. But to me they look more like those anti-vax weirdos.

Well, I guess when you have imaginary ailments, you'd want to seek out a "doctor" who'll provide you with an imaginary cure. It only makes sense, right?

I really hope there's an Afflicted Season 2.

When I was a teenager, if my mom thought she detected the slightest hint of hypochondria, malingering, or "woe is me" behavior, she would suggest a walk around the block.  It was her cure-all.  "Oh, you've been lying around all day, no wonder you feel bad--why don't you take a walk around the block?!"  At the time, it was maddening.  But watching Afflicted, I have never wanted to suggest so many walks around the block in my life.  I just feel like these "illnesses" can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Sitting around all day in your darkened bedroom, staring at the computer screen, trapped in an echo chamber of your own thoughts and those of like-minded internet denizens. . . . it can start to feel like an actual job.  Pretty soon, you are ensconced in your bed like Camille in her big death scene (looking at you, Jamison).

Although, in typing this, it occurs to me how *active* a lot of the Afflicted folks were.  Sure, they are expending most of their energy trying to prove that they are sick and traipsing all over creation for crackpot treatments.  But in their own way, they have way more energy and determination than I, a nominally healthy, admittedly fairly lazy, person have.  Huh.

I noticed that a hashtag, #doctorsaredickheads was trending on Twitter, and naturally, it was all people with Dr Google-diagnosed illnesses like all of the Afflicted people. Of course, it lead me to Jake's Twitter where he claimed that he had been in the ER again back in September for a whole boatload of tests (of course there was no follow up to that because I'm positive the results were all negative) and then he had an abscessed tooth pulled and, naturally, that caused him grave setbacks on his "healing journey."  But what's worse is this grifter has raised over $83,000 on GoFundMe. $83,000!!!!! There are working people in this country who can't pay their rent, are starving, have no transportation, and are struggling to afford actual medical care for actual medical problems and people are giving this fool $83,000  of their money?! OMG. I can't.

Hey, where my "Afflicted" peeps at? There's a thread for the new Netflix show "UNWell", I'm sure you'll enjoy (by enjoy I mean scream at the TV) as much as I did!

It's how I'm spending my day today! Fingers crossed it rises to the level of insanity as this awesome series did. 🙂

By the way, @Pepper Mostly , as a fellow Afflicted fan, you might also want to check out Skin Deep on Amazon. It's about people with "Morgellon's."

So, is Unwell worth checking out?

I think the main problem for me is their enablers (looking at you, Janine, to gut your house for this fool).   Our adopted son has learning disabilities (graduated high school by the grace of God).  But when he was first diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, hubby and I spent many hours on the internet trying to find things that might help.  His Waldorf educators (huge mistake!) suggested he be treated for 'sensory processing' issues and suggested a local 'doctor'.  The school had 'diagnosed' like 50% of the students, when in the general population it is more like 5%.  First red flag.  Took him for one session and realized it was total BS.  For his dyslexia, we heard about a visual training approach.  When for a few sessions and realized it was total BS also.  As adults we could see through this and realize the quackery, so we could intervene on his behalf.  But if you are an adult going into this willingly, it's really hard for someone to help you see reason.  Like Jill's friend tried to do gently and got shut down.

Pilar: love how she got better once the gravy train left the station

Carmen: just generally nuts, feel so bad for the husband.  Let her go live in a cabin and get your life back

Star:  too many first world problems, too much money at your feet

Jamison: go take a walk around the block (earlier post I'll borrow from!)

Jake and Bekah:  same advice

Jill:  you had a panic attack in a cheap NYC hotel.  get over yourself.

Just wanted to add, I know people whose children have been helped tremendously by treatment for sensory processing disorder, I was just trying to say it's a specific disorder, and treatment should not be suggested blindly by non-professionals.

Yes, her boyfriend went to Harvard Divinity School. He was either in the masters or PhD program.

None of these people had Lyme disease. They claimed to have "chronic Lyme" (or "mold toxicity" or "heavy metal toxicity"). None of these things are valid medical conditions in the real world. They're internet-fueled diagnoses of people with severe mental illness who think it's easier to treat physical symptoms than mental ones.

my friend DIED. she was a chronic LYME sufferer. Please thats very insulting amd hurtful to me. She was seeing a top specialist in NY and was told she had one of the worst cases. doesnt matter, she DIED at age 58 and that is sad. I dont know about these other folks but my friend had lymes and passed away. thats not faking.

I’m very late to this show, but wanted to drop by here and post. It really hit home, since my mom has a functional disorder.  She’s suffered with it for many years, along with the rest of the family.  It’s horrible and I have tried everything I know to deal with it, including getting her to see a psychiatrist.  It makes me angry that the people seemingly have no issue with driving family members nuts with their symptoms, for which there is no medical cause.  I’ve consulted with multiple professionals about how to deal with it…….It’s out of my control.  I can only manage my own emotions, so, I’ve let go.  It’s sad, but is really a psychological thing, based on everything I have encountered.   I know a few others like it, too.  It ruins lives in perfectly healthy people. The only real conditions that my mom has are Anxiety, depression and low Vitamin b12.  And she refuses to treat those things.  Lol

I wonder how these patients are doing today.
