S01.E04: Episode Four

Recommended Posts

I really felt for Emma.  That collapse she had while making out.  I finally understand what her issue was with Vida.  She felt punished for her sexuality and Vida’s relationship and eventual marriage to Eddy feels like a slap in the face.  Lyn needs to get real help a therapist because she is coping with her anger and grief in very unhealthy ways.

Poor Emma. Its what I expected, Vida freaked when she found out that Emma was into girls, and sent her away, when it was probably her taking out her own issues with her sexuality on Emma. Then she got to stay in the neighborhood where she came out, found a wife, and everyone loved her. Meanwhile, Emma was thrown out by her mom, and when she came back to the neighborhood, people treat her like a sell out. I wonder if Eddie knows why Vida and Emma were estranged.

On the other hand, I think she was pretty harsh with Lyn at the start. Her idea was good, and at least she was trying to help. Lyn is really struggling, she needs some direction in her life. I did think her watching the put upon Hispanic maid at the party to be interest, speaking Spanish to her, and then taking the same bus.

Why does Mari hate Emma so much? I get why she hates Lyn, but what the hell did Emma do, beyond leaving the neighborhood (which wasn't her fault) and being light skinned (which, again, not something she had a choice about)? I did feel bad that the guy she had a thing for is an asshole.

I think she just assumes that Emma is a sellout whose motives aren't "pure."  Of course Emma's motives are pure, in that she wants to save her family's bar from going under, but to Mari anything that changes things in the neighborhood, anything that brings in new people, is bad because her experience is that it always comes at the expense of the people who've been there all along.  To Emma changing the bar to make it more profitable is a matter of personal livelihood; to Mari, her changing the bar and making it more profitable is another step towards pricing out the current residents as new, richer residents come in.

On another note, I was impressed by this episode for the fact that it made Emma look realistically drunk at the end. Like, she was sweaty and kind of messy looking towards the end of the time in the bar, which I feel like you don't see all that much on TV. Actors play drunk all the time, but I can't remember the last time I saw one physically look so drunk.

I am so happy that Starz greenlighted this show and has Tanya Sancho as the Executive Producer.

This episode was so good. All the leads: Emma, Lyn, Eddy and Mari are messes, but messes that are relatable. Emma is this ball of confusion, anger and hurt by what her mother did, when she couldn't handle OR accept that her child is a lesbian. Emma wants to be able to mourn the loss of her mother. She loved her, but she probably also never really forgave her for throwing her out and denying her. Lyn.....she knows that her life is in this standstill and that she has totally relied on her ability to attract men, financially able to take care of her, but for her to see that these bohemian and "free" people, only see her as this exotic "other", while treating their older maid horribly, yet still going on and on about how "special" she is, made her realize that she is not at all. Mari....please do not believe a word that comes out of that user's mouth. How can you "not know" how something that you taped was conveniently shown to everyone within the same social media world that you both are involved in?! I want to give Eddy a huge hug and say that everything will be alright.

I love this show.

I’m excited about seeing more of the apparently magical chalk drawing girl. Who is she? Emma’s childhood? The spirit of the old neighborhood? Just some Magical Realism ghost girl? A guardian angel?

Where is/who is Emma and Lyn's father. Was there father ever a part of their life. Did he have a bitter break up with their mother? The father has never even been mentioned or referred to once.

This episode reminds me how much I can't stand narcissistic, jerk-off hipsters.

I had forgotten about the chalk girl from the first episode and at first thought it was the girl she was kissing at age 11.

I wonder if Lyn's postumus destruction of her mother's credit rating will add to Emma's problems finding an alternate financing arrangement.

I also wonder if the neighborhood activists understand that simple obstructionism won't save anything. It'll just trigger bankruptcy auctions, and which will bring in new owners who are even more detached from local feelings.

"Whitinas", heh.

My thought: bring the heroes of the people in for a serious talk. You want to keep Vida's? You don't want outsiders gaining a foothold? So buy a stake in it yourself. It's a lot of money, sure, so fundraise. Put your energy to use. Are you a chicano, or a chicanto?

Even if it was only 5% that might be enough to get an honest bank to take a chance.

This is what I'm loving about this show. The characters don't feel like types to me. Everything about that feels very grounded.

I hope she doesn't believe him. When her friend said "Don't be that girl, Mari" I thought YES! I hope Mari listens.

Not sure, but she has me intrigued too.
