S03.E06: Thanksgiving

Recommended Posts

I could watch Christine 24/7.

The addition of the French clouns was a nice choice.

Best line by Christine “Oh I never thought to do that with my Kirkland!”  Also “Don’t juggle the cat”

love this show!

Martha's sad Thanksgiving made me sad! No more sad Martha moments, please!

I did love the Arby's Thanksgiving meal though. And Christine getting high. And the visual absence of the twins.

And I just found out yesterday there's a Baskets podcast! Here's the link to iTunes

I thought Chip was exceptionally douche-y to Martha over Thanksgiving Dinner, especially when he just stood up and left. I was glad the "clouns" called him on his "Renoir" costume and made him burn it. I guess it was cultural appropriation that offended them, plus it was incredibly dated!

I'm so glad Christine had a nice Thanksgiving in the end. She really should have spent it with Ken and his family. At least they treat her right, unlike her dumb-ass kids (all 4 of them).

Me too. Why is she so watchable?

I loved this ep.

Christine and Ken skyping was so sweet, esp with their silly joking.

I also enjoyed seeing Christine try to write a hymn, and then the cloons singing it and acting it out.

Christine calling macarons tiny burgers was so cute.

When she said that this was the first Thanksgiving without her mother, I literally teared up.

Loved when she said she wanted to smoke weed, and Chip said, "You're weird enough."

IMO, Louie Anderson is everything in this role. It seems every bit of hurt, anger, happiness, sadness he ever experienced in his life is laid bare in that character -- and sometimes it seems Christine is experiencing all of those emotions at the same time. And the best part is that I never see him -- it's always her. I don't know how he does it but he is absolute perfection and Christine will always be one of my most favorite characters ever.

He's always so douchey to Martha and I hate him for it. I wonder if he still has a crush on her and is still treating her badly because she slept with Dale? (Which, ewwwww.)

He said in an interview, I think it was in the first season, that he is channeling his mother and a few other female relatives. Whatever it is, he's brilliant and it's probably going to be his greatest role ever.

I would love to know where Christine's fear of gypsies comes from. Considering that she has rarely left Bakersfield I don't imagine that she has ever actually met one in her entire life!

And I'm glad that we finally got to see one of Christine's presidential cats. He was super cute too! I'm glad she thought to warn the French cloons about juggling him.

It looks like the rift between Christine and Chip is healed. All things being equal it looks like she really should have bought the Arby's instead of the rodeo. At least she would have been happy even if nobody else was interested. And she could have been swimming in curly fries.

Cat Nixon! Ronald Reagan!

I got scared when she ate one of the macarons, because of her diabetes.

I honestly want Anderson to get another Emmy for this. I usually would want someone else to get a chance, but seriously-- he's amazing as Christine. So many dimensions, and it's not just the writing, it's mostly him.

I feel bad that Christine is such a sweet person and her family members suck SO MUCH. She deserves better Chip, Dale, her condescending brother, and her abusive father. Seriously, what kind of person has their mother served with papers on Thanksgiving?! And if Chip didn't want to spend the holiday with her, the least he could have done was told her ahead of time, as in before she bought that gigantic turkey. You aren't allowed to just leave on Thanksgiving Day and say you're going to someone else's house for dinner. I wish she had gone to Colorado to have Thanksgiving with Ken's family who seem to actually like her, unlike her own kids and brother.

I loved that the cloons were able to cheer up Christine by reenacting her song and her parents.

I wish she goes to Colorado with Martha and Ronald Reagan and never looks back. Leave Chip and Dale the house, the rodeo, their shitty uncle, her shitty friends, and the odious Cody and Logan.

Christine is the definition of a human being who relies on the comfort of strangers.

I'm still miffed that Chip didn't invite Martha to the Arby's Thanksgiving.

I don't even want her to leave them the house or the rodeo. Let her sell both and pocket the cash and never look back.

I feel like there's a connection between how sweet she is and how much abuse she suffers. In certain unfortunate interpersonal dynamics, the more nice someone is, the more others see that person as a punching bag. It's almost like they experience her niceness as a constant reminder of and rebuke to their own not-nice natures: "How dare you make me confront, by your very sweetness, how miserable a human being I am! You must be punished for this."

Does anyone know if Arby's and Costco pay for all the advertising they get on this show? Honestly, I'm not criticizing the show if it's on the take; in fact, I think it's cool if they found a way to make production pay for itself this way. (I wouldn't feel that way about most shows, but with this show, I do--maybe because I suspect the show wouldn't be on the air without it.) I'm just wondering if all the airtime is just because ZG likes Costco and Arby's, or if indeed they help finance the show.

I don't know if they pay for it, but Arby's does sponsor the show -- and they run ads during commercial breaks. I've never seen a Costco paid ad though.

I also don't know if Arby's signed up for sponsorship after they were introduced as a plot device on the show. When Jon Stewart hosted the Daily Show, he used to trash Arby's constantly. I think they got in on the joke and made a farewell ad to this tenure on the show at the end. Their media people seem to be pretty savvy.

I would be shocked of Arbys and Costco aren't product placement deals, but I don't mind. It's worth it and they do a good job of making it mostly believable within the show's universe. I thought opening Arby's at night on Thanksgiving for a private family meal was over the top, but it's the first time I thought they went too far and I seriously eyerolled over the situation.

I completely agree about Christine's sweetness.

At the same time, it's true that she doesn't listen, and I was glad Martha called her on it.

Also, Christine kind of encourages and enables her horrible off-spring in taking advantage of and abusing her. She could have taken the inheritance and moved to Colorado to start a new life. She continually chooses her vile children over fun times with the Carpet King. She seems content with the Skype relationship while he clearly is looking for more.

I know Louie already won an Emmy for this, but his people should submit this episode for Emmy consideration. It was perfection. (I wonder if he’d be considered a leading actor? Almost all the eps have featured Christine.)

I was concerned the French clowns would be either mean or pretentious but they were lovely and in two seconds saw and understood Christine’s pain at seeing her father on the video - something nobody she’s related to seems to get. So I love them too.

Years ago Zach G was on the Maron podcast describing how he and Louis CK pitched the idea to Louie - it sounds like Louie took five seconds to accept the role. I need to listen to that again.

Christine makes me sad because she is such a sweet lady but so obtusely wrong in her choices.  Buying the rodeo was such a profoundly stupid move but I can’t laugh at the inevitable failure because my heart is breaking for Christine.  She might have found happiness in Denver with Ken, but she threw her chance and her money away on a doomed venture for ungrateful sons.

I don’t hate Dale as much as other posters do.  He’s a jerk, but I don’t think he’s irredeemable.  His complaints about Christine’s business incompetence are not unreasonable and he has come through before for his daughter.  The shopping spree with his daughters was a lot like Christine’s purchase of the rodeo—a misguided, extravagant, doomed venture, with the distinction that his motives were selfish.
